My wife was a Navy photographer, based at Point Mugu Navel Air Station, CA at the time 'Shockwave' came. She was assigned to photograph the event and I am a photographer too. We shared shooting the beautiful, exciting evening show of the 'Shockwave' Jet Truck. Twilight time is the best time for flames and late blue sky colors. I met the driver Chris Darnell at the banquet later. Neal Darnell was Chris' dad. I share his pain at the loss of a fantastic race machine. However, I am focused on this: Neal Darnell lost his son way before his time. I know, I lost my son at age 28 of melanoma. My prayers to Neal, his wife and family!!!

Other more in depth investigation say the left engine came apart and threw shrapnel into the tire. The first evidence is the flames coming from the back just a split second before the tire is seen throwing chunks. It also deployed that left chute which probably also helped cause the truck to start to spin sideways then into full 360s. So very sad. I can imagine how devastated his wife and children are. 😢

What most people doesn't understand is that any sort of racing is dangerous and could kill at any moment. But statistics show that you are more likely to be killed in your street car than on the track. Of course there are more cars on the road than on a race track, but take into account how many races take place each week and how many drivers are on the track the number of deaths is very low compared to highway deaths. Safety equipment has come a long way since the early days of motorsports buy no matter how good it gets there's always going to be people killed. I've been around racing for over 40 years and worked track fire and rescue for 20 years and it will never be 100% safe, so everyone needs to stop making accusations and assumptions about what happened and let the investigation determine what happened. Pray for and respect the family because they are good people and don't need this right now.

@@nathaneller2268 I hear ya Nathan. I’m just thinking the tires aren’t rated for it and weren’t designed for it. The group who built the truck I’m sure know what they’re doing and calculated that a tire able to hold massive loads would be strong enough for high speed runs. That’s not the equivalence of actually running a tire properly engineered for the application. It’s risk taking using normalization of deviance. It was normalization of deviance that caused the space shuttle challenger to explode. The o-rings were shown to have an engineering issue, basically the design didn’t meet the criteria. The space shuttle didn’t explode previous runs and so they normalized the deviance in engineering. The deviance here is using a semi tire and the normalization is that the truck tires had made many high speed runs without a failure.

You start to have problems when you use something like solid tires. To start, one has a compressible gas and flexible rubber shell while they other is a solid piece of rubber which is not very compressible. When you fly either of them down a road with bumps and changes in the road's structure that come in contact with the tire, the tire filled with air acts like a suspension system (in fact it works with the suspension system to enhance the ride), the bump flexes the tire, the tire's flex then pushes the air inside inward, increasing the pressure and after the bump is cleared the increased pressure pushes the bumped rubber back out and returns back to normal pressure. Things are different with solid rubber, hitting that bump there's not much for the material to flex, it can compress a little bit but the more rubber there is the harder it is to do so. This leads to a very bumpy ride over even if the road is slightly smooth. Not to mention the fact that the tire's will be very loud and very bumpy on their own just due to the physics of tires. Throw those on a 350 MPH vehicle and chances are your risking the control of the vehicle. Tires filled with air can be rated for much higher speeds than solid tires, solid tires basically become the worst thing to have on a vehicle after you go past about 30 MPH. The tires they used were conventional truck tires that were modified so the tread (80 pounds of it from each tire) would already be off the tire instead of flying off at the high rate of speed and doing damage and causing problems. As far as it seems, they weren't quite rated for 350 MPH but at the same time they have been in the past approved by the NHRA which takes great care into the safety of the drivers and audience. Considering how many vehicles drive 350 MPH with the weight of a truck, its not going to be easy to find tires rated for that. So they simply had to make due with what they had.

so in your world any and all dangerous jobs should not be done by people with a family? the world would most likely stop in that case.

Pushing materials beyond their fuctuonal limits is what caused that crash. Its a jet engine. Its designed for one purpose.....to fly. Its core design is to create lots of thrust as fast as possible and to lose thrust as slow as possible. Because its a jet engine. Sudden loss of thrust means sudden loss of lives. Racing tires and aviation engines dont mesh well. Failure was always a risk and they chose to keep betting the house. Stunt performers know the risk of not executing a stunt properly. Death or seeious injury. Its called probablity. For every successful race the odds of an accident just keeps going higher. Tires fail at a rate of ridiculous. Watch a nascar race. Keep an eye on the Goodyear rep when a right front tire blows on lap 3. Thats what pure fear looks like.
