Back before oil based store-boughts, beeswax was the preferred method of cleaning and preserving. Even today, a lot of the old abbeys and churches in Europe still use beeswax. It's been a winner for a long time and so glad y'all are trotting down that road!

I just wanted to say this as info: olive oil will get rancid after some period of time. Generally it's not used for any wood products that touch food. It will not be a big deal so don't worry. But mostly linseedoil is used for wood products that come in contact with food. Or foodsafe mineral oil. Mind you; linseed oil will make the grain pop out a lot but also make it a lot darker. Mineral oil not so much. Cheers!

I always run an air cooled generator in some type of enclosure in the winter. This helps to dry any lingering moisture and keeps the crankcase breather from plugging. I made a box with an adjustable air inlet and keep it above 50 even on those -30 mornings.

During my days of living the simple life I learned an invaluable lesson from a friend in the Yukon. Make a toilet seat out of the blue styrofoam. it is quite amazing how it is still warm to the "touch" at -40F/C. One other outhouse trip for readers is a neat trick for avoiding digging outhouse pits in shallow water table areas. My century old outhouse had never been moved. It used a large drawer that slide in the side under the hole. I found that I could avoid emptying the draw during the warmer/smelly months and I lined it with newspaper so I could dump it in a pit much farther from the house during the winter when it was frozen. Those burgers look delicious! Love these videos.. brings back so many great memories. 40 years later the lessons I learned from simple living give a great perspective on life. Greg

Try a soap finish for bare wood. You can use castille soap or some other natural soap, and all you need to renew it is more soap and water. You have to keep maintaining it, but soap is pretty clean, smells good and is also all natural. You have to use all natural soaps with no detergents. Look this up on the net, there is lots of info on various methods. The bees wax, I think, is going to be sticky and dirt will be hard to remove without stripping it off, which will involve strong cleaners. People in Denmark and Sweden use soap, even on bare wood floors. Check it out.

You are so right about having back-ups. I have 4 generators, 3 well pumps, 4 house pumps, 2 inverters. 2 battery banks, and 2 solar arrays. Just too name a few. I'm always checking pawn shops and yard sales for good deals. It doesn't matter if I already have it, if it's a good deal I buy it. I can't count the time these back-up have pulled me out of a jam.

Not sure if you’ll get this as this is an old video, but helpful hint from an Alaskan that had a cabin on a lake with an outhouse. Use a thick piece of foam on your toilet ledge and cut out a whole where your toilet seat is. Then you don’t freeze when you sit down!

Looks awesome! Don't be alarmed if you set something hot on the table and it leaves a cloudy ring. It will go away pretty quickly. As for keeping things running better. First and oil plug heater for the vehicles. A heating cable for one of the solar panels that is temperature-activated requires no electricity and will keep the solar panels free of snow. You might also look into a wind turbine to power a low wattage space heater to keep the generators warm along with all the batteries. Only needs to produce 500 watts. I have a space heater for my studio that only uses 250 watts and heats up a 120 square feet which is about 25 square feet more than I have. So there that ought to keep you busy haha

The cold is very hard on equipment. We lived just outside of Wasilla near Big Lake, and then later in Trapper Creek. I remember several times when it got so cold that our stuff just out and out failed. One time when it was somewhere around 40 below outside of Wasilla ( we don't know how cold it was because our thermometer stopped at - 30), but I got in the truck to start it up and the clutch just went down to the floor....just broke! Another surprise that year was trying to cook steaks on a barbecue somewhere around that temperature. It really doesn't work...we did only have a Hibachi but no matter how long we cooked it for and no matter how hot the coals were the steaks simply didn't cook. I lowered the grill grate all the way to just , almost completely on top of the coals out of desperation and they simply would not cook! The cold was robbing the heat too fast! So we eventually brought them inside and pan fried them...lol.....Of course it was always on the coldest nights in Trapper Creek that our generators failed.....but I miss it....like your channel. I know Willow...we looked at a lot of property out there....

If you want to stop the checks in your table, you can install bow ties. Many wood workers are now filling checks with epoxy. However that does defeat the natural coating approach. The wood has beautiful grain. Good job.

I'm not sure about your model, but i know on the similar honda's they have two speeds. If you mostly run on low speed only they don't create enough heat to burn the carbon off the ignition components. Every few hours of run time you should run it on high for a half hour. worked wonders. great videos, just found your channel and have been binge watching.
@jarrodluck7489

Obviously check your warranty before you do this but using a thicker (more viscose) motor oil/lubricant in vehicles and power tools will allow it to cling a little better to the various surfaces in the motors and also allow any oil pumps to circulate the oil faster. This will reduce wear and tear on your machines and help then last longer, especially in the colder months. Just make sure you don't go too far to the point that the oil won't circulate if it's really freezing outside.
