Scenes of trucking on Alaska's Dalton Highway -- also known as the "North Slope Haul Road" -- during snowy conditions circa 1979. Roger Emerson Wheelock was a trucker on the Dalton Highway for many years, and he filmed many of his travels and adventures (Color/Silent/Super 8mm film).
The Dalton Highway begins north of Fairbanks, Alaska, and stretches for 400 miles to the community of Deadhorse, near the Arctic Ocean and Prudhoe Bay Oil Fields. The highway was constructed to support the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System in 1974. It is named after James Dalton, an Alaskan expert in Arctic engineering.
This sequence contains excerpts from AAF-10404 from the Wheelock Family collection held by the Alaska Film Archives, a unit of the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives Department in the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks. The Alaska Film Archives holds thousands of historical films and videos, which are available for viewing and use by patrons and researchers. Items in the collection span from professional productions to amateur home-movies, made in and about Alaska from the earliest days of filmmaking through today.
