+Bullhorn76 I'll trade you my tractor repair for yours ,, I split my Steiger panther ST325 to replace hinge pins and bushings ,, and also have the engine and transmision out of it because i broke the transmission ,,the original transmission had 12,000 hours on it and the additional stress of the bigger engine led to it failing ,,I replaced the original 3406 cat engine in this tractor with a 3408 which puts 475HP and 1400 LB/FT to the transmission VS the original 325HP and 875 LB/FT ,,made a big difference in how it pulls a plow for sure

it's a lot easier to pull the power quad off the front and then leave the whole box on a bench when taking out the shift forks. the rails they are on have to slide forward to get the forks out and there are little springs and pins that stop you selecting two gears at the same time that will bounce away if you're not careful!
@SledgeHammer43

No its the cost of the Break Downs that tells you it might be replacement time. It's a certain point where maintenance cost and replacement cost are fairly close but it is worth the replacement before it flips and the Maitenance cost start eating up profits.

and then the Value of the Tractor or Machinery. Because as Equipment gets older the parts start getting harder to find.

+Don Hanson : He saves a fortune by doing his own labor. Most all of his repairs on this tractor are quite minimal as compared to a new replacement tractor to the tune of $100,000 dollars. Just ask Wes if you don't believe me.

+Don Hanson : Oh and also, OLD? Really? We have tractors on our farm that are still going strong that were built in the 1940's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. Spare me the b.s. about parts getting hard to find. Still not a problem with John Deere.
@SledgeHammer43
8 жыл бұрын
+Turbo Diesel well I do know that some John Deere's finding parts are little tough, but Cat some models finding parts are down right impossible. like I've aways said there will come a time it's cheaper to Replace than to keep doing the repairs because they change designs and parts change. save me the bull about aways being able to find parts. when part request for a certain part drops they will stop making them and or rebuilding them the bonus of John deere is that they keep using parts for longer than most manufacturers and upgrading them is not to hard.
@daviddaniels1219

Hey first thing you need to do is unbolt the section you just rebuilt. Then you can unbolt the shifting rail they slide to the front. A&B shifting fork Will slide out but C&D shifting fork will not. You have to pull back on C&D and do some finessing to get the plastic taps on.

i think it be a good idea to change the other syncro pad thingies too when you got that part of the gearox a part as they are in there for the same period as the one that broke there prolly be ready to let go as whell , jd prolly sells those as a kit anyway on the other hand it mightve been sumtin from that time you missed installing the shifter thingy in the right place (on the outside of the gearbox ) that caused the tractor to stay in gear the last time you had rebuild it , i remember tim kindah forced some of the gears in and out to see if that would make it better and the tractor driving intoo the wall after starting it it prolly allready was partly broken before you where repairing the other part of the gearbox as there was so mush brass stuff laying on the bottom too bad you didnt spotted it then , wouldve saved you some downtime then again the season is prolly slowed down a lot untill spring

$2.00 part? What $2.00 part? We're talking about a John Deere! It is interesting that he had already ordered a couple of parts. It's rarely only a couple of parts. I have personal tendency to tear things apart before ordering anything. For that transmission I'd be looking at new bearings and races for every shaft, bushings for gears (if the gears have bushings) Friction plates, o-rings, gaskets, filter,...... The list can get quite long and expensive but to do things on the cheap can get really expensive if you have to do the same job twice.

Well it sucks you are back on transmission work again but at least half of it's clean, and all the bolts will come out! .That will be your next problem it's been apart so many times the threads will be worn and stuff won't stay tight and you will need thread lock to keep it together L.O.L.

+David Krause He has just one baler which the whole hay operation depends on. There are so many tractors on that farm we lost count of them ;-) The hay specs probably demand the latest in baling technology, whereas which tractor moves it does not matter. Although the Krohn is about to change that, as the power requirement is unprecedented.

because the Americans have to be different to everyone else, that drawbar just looks like hardship, same reason they get big self propelled mowers that can do 10 mile and hour but only cut 14 foot at a time, because us Europeans use butterflies cutting 32 foot at a time, and they have to be different even if we're right
