It's currently 1:11 am on Monday January 22nd 2024 and I randomly thought of watching Dan Issel highlights. This did not disappoint.

Thanks for making this video. Basketball fans should know how good of a player he was. As a coach, he struggled to control his temper. In order to understand him as a coach, you should look at the kind of player he was. He lined up every night at 6'9" against Kareem, Moses, Walton, Parish, etc. He brought it every night, and he had a hard time understanding how his players didn't play as hard as he did. I hope he's found peace in his retirement.

How would he do against Camby, Martin or even Gordon ? We would never know, it's a total other game now ... I miss the late 2000's. The three point game gets a bit tideous

Yeah... They "should" know and then they'd stop pissing me off talking about who is who and what is what. Issel was a damned problem. He had a solid shot from distance as well. It was a huge part of his game.

@@Delacloture There's plenty of REASONS his codename is "HORSE" and I doubt it has much to do with playing that shootaround game.

My favorite player of all time. I followed him as a young boy in rural Kentucky in the Louisville newspaper with the Kentucky Colonels of the ABA when he was putting up incredible scoring numbers. No one had ever seen a center (and Dan was always truly a center- not forward) who could run so hard, put the ball on the floor, shoot outside and just move with such effort with a wide array of polished offensive skills that are still not appreciated. I could not see Dan on television at all- only followed in newspaper during those ABA years. Didn't see him play until late in his NBA career with Denver. Since then I have collected video of his game when I can find them. When Issel retired in 1985, the top 3 scorers in pro basketball history were: 1. Kareem Abdul-Jabber 2. Wilt Chamberlain 3. Dan Issel As Dan said in his book "Parting Shots"- "I've won more free beers for people" in bar bets.

Only 296 views? Dan is an ABA and NBA Legend. Its a shame that people don’t remember him.

Maybe it's because of that "incident" why he's become a forgotten figure.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American too. Dan Issel had the quickness to beat opposing centers off the dribble. I remember, he would pop in a few from 17 feet, and then he would start driving by me to the basket.

I’m from Kentucky. I’ve to look at who was the greatest basketball player to come out of Kentucky. I saw Dan’s name, and I found this video because I want to see how good he was. I don’t understand why hardly anyone is talking about him. Thanks for the video.
