Agreed. There are a bunch on the market and very few sound anything like a Leslie. Last I checked, most Hammond guys were using a Ventilator, when they couldn't have the real thing or a Motion Sound Pro3T. I like Alesis' Midiverb4, Leslie sim; you can actually hear the rotor glide to a stop, pointing in some random direction, LOL. but the downside is you can either switch slow/fast or brake, but never both without some kind of MIDI workaround. PSP's L'Otary is amazing, but it's software.

You guys are the best. I was one of the guys requesting this video and you guys listened and that is just too cool. Thanks! The Hammond organ bit brings on a very good point- you guys should compare a real Leslie or Vibratone cabinet with a couple of Leslie emulation pedals, Univibe, and some other traditional stompboxes like phaser, chorus, flanger, and tremolo. Dial in the stompboxes to get as close to the Leslie sound as possible and compare individually and maybe make some conclusions about what combination of pedals might get you in the ballpark. I feel like the Leslie sound is really complex and each of the more traditional modulation stompboxes can emulate different aspects of the Leslie sound - the doppler effect, the phasing, the tremolo created by the spinning speaker, etc. I've even heard of people splitting their guitar signal to two amps, high passing one and applying phase or chorus and low passing the other and applying tremolo....

Sweet! Thanks! By the way, a great tremolo to check out for that clip is the Moog MF Tremolo. I use mine for pseudo-rotary effects with the "Tone" set just below noon and the "Shape" just above noon. Add an expression pedal to ramp the speed, and it gets a pretty cool rotary/trem effect.

On the smaller board it seems the only things that were really deficient were the phaser and flanger. OD's and boost were fine, flashback mini fine, as was hof reverb. Even the chorus was pretty nice. Dan's overdriven sound great too, obviously, but with OD It seems like it's easier to get a good one at a lower price and that's somewhat because the quality of the OD sound is based in it doing what it does and how that interacts with your amp. The modulations on the other hand seem to come only from the pedal and need to be good on their own.

That Pedal Show actually, I meant it as a suggestion for the original comment (sorry for the lack of tags)... Great video! Few times I've thought if I should get just a cheap Tone City for testing out some effects I don't use that much but here it was pretty clear how "restricted" the tone gets with those. Not like you couldn't probably do Zakk Wylde impression with Angel Wing but with different things it might be too "restricted". Well, the phaser is actually the weird sounding from Tone City. On the other hand, I'll buy that Golden Plexi. It's a one setting pedal but it does sound great. Even without the "for a cheap pedal" note. I hope Mick managed to satisfy people who ask cheaper pedals too!

Great video! Especially useful as I start to travel more. One request: I'm gearing up to make a record, and I would love to hear how you guys treat pedals/effects differently if you're in the recording studio! When Mick mentions "I hope it comes through in the audio," I found myself thinking about this question.
@ThatPedalShow
7 жыл бұрын
+Rob Flax Hey Rob. It depends entirely on the individual situation, no guidelines really. What I'm referring to in the video is that there's always more sonic info/physical experience in the room than there ever is through the mics, and that goes for every guitar sound ever recorded. We try to make it as 'real' as possible for TPS, but no mic/recording system is as sophisticated as the sum of your senses in the room. We are hoping to do a video on how we record sounds, which might help you get some ideas about how you'd go about it. Best advice is find a great engineer/producer and seek their advice. It's a skill beyond me and Dan!

Could you do an episode on your favourite types of pickups, and talk about your favourite applications for each? Also Boutique vs Stock, and possibly an episode on unexpected pickup uses, like how YJM pickups are great for country and how tele bridge pickups are good for metal
@ThatPedalShow
7 жыл бұрын
+James Todino This would be interesting. Dan and I tend to prefer pickups that are as close as possible to the original 50s/early 60s single coils and humbuckers. We find that classic guitars are able to do pretty much anything... given that we're not into modern metal/djent. And that tends to be the unexpected bit for a lot of people! Strat, Tele, Les Paul, 335, SG..... Pretty much all of the music we love was made using those classic guitars and pups. A few exceptions, no doubt, but certainly the majority of it.

I think the Angel Wing sounds great for a cheap chorus pedal. That Royal Overdrive is just ridiculous. If it wasn't so expensive I would get one ifI could find anywhere that sells them in the USA. The SL Drive sounded a lot better than some videos of it I've watched, actually really good. Merry Christmas and thanks for another great video!

Its interesting, because I have the SL Drive, the AT, the Friedman BE OD in my arsenal of modern high gain over drives and although I think that the SL Drive is not a really versatile pedal with limited controls, it always seems to cut through when I play with a band and is so small, its the best pedal of its size in terms of plexi drives :)
