Hey! Sorry to be that guy but I think the audio is actually worse for this episode. With Francis especially there's a lot of room sound going on. What I suspect is happening is that Francis' voice is louder so it triggers the gate for Jimmy's microphone and we end up hearing the room reverb from Francis' voice through Jimmy's mic.

Using "better" mics isn't always a great idea in sub-optimal spaces as they reveal way too much of the ugly room sound. And you need more broadband absorption :)

The sound is much worse, if they’re going to be as loud as they want to be, they need to sit further from each other or else you’ll hear Francis (and the reverb) through Jimmi’s mic too. There’s other things you can try of course but that’s what I would do first. Source - I’m a podcast producer

The bike shops near me are all small, have no stock of anything to the point of being useful or reliable in emergencies, and don’t offer test rides anyway (no stock remember). They have to order in anything I’d want to buy. I see no benefit to then existing tbh as they’re shit. Gouging me for servicing costs on top of paying 50% extra for everything I buy is just madness. The only local alternative is a Specialized out of town shop - slick operation but ridiculous prices vs any alternative. I know there are decent bike shops out there that still have knowledgable staff, test rides and put on group rides, just none near me. Independent servicing places are better all around and I’m happy to support them for complicated stuff I can’t do myself. Charge what you want for servicing and fitting parts, but don’t base your bike mechanic business on getting profit per component too.

This has been one of your very best podcasts, particularly the section on hookless rims. Canyon and ‘bike shops’ I have lots of experience of. Have bought 2 bikes from Canyon - absolutely totally perfect out of the box, compare to bike shops, most of which patronise and bullshit you (especially as a woman) , don’t hold stock. Have taken delivery of brand new bikes where the shifting has been atrocious, front and /or rear derailleur not set up correctly, future Shokz on a Specialized not set up at all and lied to about it by staff. Most bike shops are the most over rated places ever !! There rant over.

The idea that a customer would come into a shop asking for help and be told off to "phone the internet" is exactly why I'm not going out of my way to save my local bike shops. Across numerous stores, I've been talked down to, upsold, or had shoddy work performed (stripped bolts, etc). How about adapt to the needs of your customers. The market is like the tide. You can either move with it or stand resolute but you can't stop it.

Getting told to “phone the internet” and getting charged the proper labor, are 2 different things, and as someone that has worked in the industry for over 14 years, it’s more a case of the latter. Customers come one for a “once over” and we charge 1 hour for a thorough check (including torque on all fasteners and spoke tension), then customers balk and expect free labor, it’s the same standard for any bike sold on the floor, except direct to consumer brands have supposedly have all of this done save for the final handlebar/stem installation and front wheel install.

Having personally bought a YT, Canyon, and several Polygon bikes, they’ve done a stellar job for something that comes out of a box-much better than say something that you would personally walk out the door from a Decathlon or even a specialty outdoor shop here in the USA like REI. I’ve had 2 bikes from friends and co-workers from those stores where it was a tune-up from the get go including dishing and tensioning wheels.

With regards hookless wheels, they should have a warning message on the wheels themselves next to where the valve is saying " maximmun inflation 73psi" . This should be mandatory.

I'd contend that someone who plays with their phone in stationary traffic, will probably do the same whilst driving. It boils my piss when I see people messing about on their phone behind the wheel - just arrogant and obnoxious behaviour. CyclingMikey's father died due to a drunk driver as far as I'm aware, and driving whilst using a phone has been shown to be as much of an impairment as being drunk behind the wheel is, so I completely understand and support his crusade.

Love the podcast! Here's a suggestion to improve the audio: put a lot of soft materials in the room, like a couch or recliner, pillows, carpet, etc. Those soft materials absorb some of the sound waves that reflect around the room. The black foam on the wall does help, but they are more for high frequencies. The mid and low frequencies are what's reverberating in the room. Hope this helps! 😀

The sound definitely got worse from the previous episodes. There is a lot of echo in the room. To use these kind of mics, you would have to keep keep them about a fist distance away from your mouth and level out the gain so it does not peak. This way you would no longer pick up the echo in the room and the audio quality will be much better. Great podcast nonetheless, please continue making them!

Hard disagree on Canyon being overrated. I think bike prices in shops are out of control and these direct-to-consumer brands (Canyon, YT, Spot, ect...) are the only brands that are making bikes that are more in reach for the average enthusiast consumer. Just comparing the offerings for endurance bikes (Domane vs Endurace). Sure, the Domane has the downtube storage and fender mounts, but for the SL 7 AXS model, it's $7500 (and it comes with alloy bars+stem). Stepping up to the SLR model, which from their website seems to only be a 100 gram savings, would put the price at $9700. Canyon specs their SLX AXS model at $5500, and their CFR, which comes with Red AXS, is $9k. Is the bike shop support that you talk about worth $2000 to $4000?

Yeah Canyon bikes come pretty well specced for what you pay for. Trek & Specialized are sold in my area & are wildly overpriced for what’s specced on their bikes. You can’t get a 105 equipped bike for less than $2k from either company. That is insane. I got a CAAD Optimo 1 with 105 for $1300 this year. They are not making a $700 better bike to justify the price difference lmao. The Endurace with 105 is the same price as the Optimo 1 when it’s not discounted fyi. No reason to buy a trek or spesh if you can avoid it.

The problem I have with companies like Canyon, there isnt really a possibility for me to ride some of there bikes. If I want to ride a canyon, I have to drive 7 hours to their "loca" test centre ... I'm not ordering stuff I don't no I like or if it even fits...

@42 minutes, that was my video, (and it's back up) and the exact cause has yet to be determined, but clearly the safety factor is way too narrow, and yes, extremely easy for a hungover cyclist to go 10psi over the max in the morning. Blowout does not always occur immediately. In my case the first one took 90 seconds. (Static conditions).

With my lbs (Giant), if you buy a part that is not from them directly to install the part, they charge 1.5x the labour charge. Atm, their labour charge is £60/h so out-sourcing parts means paying £90/h. Got to calculate and see which way works out better.

The tyre sidewall reports the pressure rating for hooked rims. The box of the tyre will say to not exceed 72.5 psi if installing on hookless rims. This is the problem. Nobody reads the box, and people are being sold installed systems with the only visible pressure rating being dangerously high.

There are very few components on an F1 car aero-related that are homologated (that is, where all the teams are using the same thing). Teams use the exact same wheels and tires. The halo around the driver's head is basically the same shape car to car, as well as the housings for the onboard cameras. Most of the stock parts are internal to the car. Basically, if it is involved in slipping through the air, the teams need to design and manufacture those components themselves.

Regarding canyon: I bought the grail after it came out (still with ultegra) and the amount of shops which would have been able to offer a similar product, with a similar price/value ratio just wasnt there. I've been to Koblenz to take a look at the bike and test it. Any smaller store around the corner would have needed to order something first, because they wouldnt have higher priced carbon bikes around in the first place. So the group of bike stores which could rightfully say "hey, why didnt you buy from us?" is rather small.

Any bike shop that told me to 'phone the internet' if I was asking them to do some paid work on a bike, just because I got it from the internet deserves to fail. What a terrible attitude. Where does it end? Not working on a bike if you bought from another shop? Only working on equipment they have sold you in person? Honestly, bike shops seem to be the home of terrible service attitudes and elitism. They really need to get a grip and remember who is paying them, or they will soon go out of business. After all, if they can't compete on new sales, then good service and mechanical work is all they have left to pay the bills, so why fuck it up by being assholes? At least one shop I know sent a bike back to a friend from a full service with shot wheel bearings, brakes full of air and with non-genuine pads fitted. It took me a couple of hours to identify and correct all the issues and make it safe to ride. They actually charged real money to make it worse than before they touched it.

I love Rouvy as it shows me actual roads. I have used it to ride locations to get visuals on a place I have not been, so when I got there, it was more familiar. Also, I think Francis' volume was a little echoie, Jimmy's was fine. Just do away with Hookless, eliminates a lot of potential issues

Rouvy is actually responsible for me becoming a cyclist, honestly. I picked rouvy over it's competitors when I started using indoor cycling as extra training for my former main activities specifically for the variety of courses. The live video of real places got me interested in riding outdoors. I've never been tempted to switch to Zwyft

36:53 - 37:04 = fluff up of the week 😅 . Regarding Zwift having limited routes/maps/worlds I think is to try to ensure that there are always enough people in their worlds. Because I feel the big win of Zwift is it’s social aspect of the game, joining a group ride or able to randomly join an actual person riding/running on the free ride mode and not a bot. I’m also with Jimmy on don’t buy hookless stance, why complicate the system I’m using.

about Canyon part, here in Belgium we have Canyon bikeshops and they can be located on the website, most of the bikeshops sell a certain brand and sometimes change it from time to time. so that is a lot of time also a problem

A lot of people are critical of hookless wheels / setups without having actually run them and understood them. Maybe they are cheaper to manufacture but also the carbon moulding process for a hookless I.e. straight edge rim means that you can use a non-flexible press / mould. When you have a hook in there you need to use a more flexible insert in order to remove it again once the carbon has set. This means manufacturers are able to theoretically create stronger sidewalls to their rims using this method. And so long as people are following the correct procedures regarding tyre sizes and pressures, there shouldn’t be any issues. And yes this means 25mm tyres are NOT the best use-case as you need higher pressures. But anything 28mm up (which we now all know is faster anyway) with lower pressures and this

The issue here is that people don't understand them and people are being sold bikes with hookless rims without this being made very clear. Their mate says "stick some tubeless ready 25s on those because the stock tyres are shit and suddenly you have someone riding a dangerous setup without even realising. I have hookless on my road bike and have for about 18 months now with 0 issues but I am very aware of what I need to do in order to make it safe. Many won't be.

@@ghitsta Well, if anything I've learned today that in my current configuration I cannot run hookless (as due to weight I run 7-8 bar). If the max is 73psi then this is 5 bar. Many, many, many cyclists will not know this and a tire is literally the first thing that will be changed by the rider itself.

2 years on a Giant SLR 1 wheelset that came with my 2021 TCR. 25000kms so far and going well. Giant are quite bullish on their test, their rim sticker says do not inflate beyond 125psi, there's no mention anywhere physically on the bike about 73psi. Infact, the tyres that shipped with the bike have a minimum pressure ABOVE 73psi (85psi).

Hookless has been standard on car tires for ages. Basically, hookless wheels for bikes only make sense for higher volume and lower pressure. For road bikes, i wouldn't consider it unless i was riding at least 28c and I'm quite a small rider.

I think the big issue is that there simply isn't enough information out there. I am currently on zipp 303 firecrests (25mm ID) and I'm running 28mm tyres on them. I've had zero issues and I am 83kg and have them inflated to around 67PSI on the back and slightly lower at the front. I believe 73PSI is rated as the max. I regularly do bunny hops, hit potholes at speed and generally abuse the tyres which one would think would cause issues if I was truly anywhere near the danger zone with these. There are definitely issues somewhere with hookless but I think people just love to jump on "new" tech and say "I told you so" and "back in my day" etc etc.

Car tyres also make use of an adhesive between the rim and the bead of the tyre. The kinds of tools required to fit and remove a car tyre is also substantially different. Besides, car rims are usually steel or some kind of alloy. Bicycles are decreasingly using fewer and fewer alloy rims.

There is no doubt doubt that the sport's sponsorship by the national airlines and formation of high profile Cycling Team are national marketing strategies to attract visitors to the country but is that any different or worse than commercial the sponsorship that goes on in sport? Major sports tournaments in China and Russia have also been cited as sports washing but as a couple of the biggest sporting nations on the planet I'd be shocked not to see them hosting major sporting events.

Interesting point on hookless. As an example - I've just had a look and the standard wheels that come with my TCR are hookless. I've been running (tubeless) 25mm Gavia Corse tyres at 80-85psi since day one and had no issues in 5500 miles, with just one puncture that self-sealed and got me 40 miles down the road

51:58 Most shopping is shifting to online, not just bikes with Canyon and others. Even clothing, that you usually want to try on before buying, are sold online (can be returned if they don't fit). Bike shops are blessed in that bikes, even if bought online, still need in-person servicing. They should embrace that and stay alive. If they don't, because of their pickiness on working on online bikes, they are doomed to die.

Here's result of my short research on hookless wheels during last off-season, when I was thinking which to choose. Chinese manufacturer asked me hooked or hookless and result of my googling was, that few years ago this technology was presented, manufacturers said, that it has great potential, rims can be stronger. But nobody got inspired and in recent years nobody in masses supported this idea. Because, as Francis said, with high pressure will be problems. But on the other side of the spectrum, MTB guys go extra low with pressure, and tire also can come off from hookless rim.

Well, if you believe Zipp, or maybe better Silca(they dont sell wheels), you dont need so high pressures anyway.

@@Xarx42 I ride gravel and I was more concerned about lower pressures. Also, when choosing from Chinese manufacturer, they don't care - hooked or hookless, this decision is up to You. So I didn't find any reason to choose hookless.

@@AwwSweet Apparently the side walls should be more stable with hookless rims, so it should withstand impacts better if you hit through on a gravel road or is there another reason you are concerned? I personally like the approach with a lower pressure, but I didnt have so many options to choose from unfortunately (its a longer story ^^) and Zipps Firecrest were one of the best price/value options.

@@Xarx42 as I remember, I was concerned that choice of hookless rims shrinks choice of tires, because all tire manufacturers support hooked rims and not so many support hookless. "I didn't have so many options". China gives a lot of options. ;) Aliexpress only can cover all needs, hehe. ) Or there is always Nextie, which considered very reliable wheels manufacturer.

@@AwwSweet I am fine with continental so I dont have an issue there. :) I know ^^. And yes, there are certainly some good products out there. I thought about other wheels first, but the bike store didnt have so many options and I actually had a good experience there with the bike fit.

@@dmac2573 think there used to be. But how often to you see caravans on narrow little roads and crawling at 25mph now? Not often and I can't remember the last time I saw a caravan doing 50/60mph. they all over take me now when I'm driving!

The problem with tubeless on road wheels is when the rider is heavy. For a 90+ kg rider, I'm not sure it's recommended to run tubeless unless your tyres are 35mm+ imo. My winter bike has 32mm tyres on a 19mm internal tubeless ready hooked rim and the recommended tyre pressure for the roads I use would be above the hookless maximum pressure, so I'm sticking with tubes (specifically tpu tubes).

Same on hookless, I'm a tall guy and not small. The Silca tire pressure calculator just tells me "No" for any hookless wheels.

@@ESBestrom Well, what Silca calculates is the potential ideal tire pressure for a specific situation. Silca also underlines how a lower pressure affects you a lot less then going above. So apparently going below by 10 psi costs you 1 Watt, but with 10 psi too much you loose 9 Watts. I dont want to say we need to look for those small gains, but there seems to be some flexibility.

Yes... I run 32mm (trekking bike with tubes) on ~6 Bar (85 psi) (and I've done ~6.5/95 psi many times).

Surely temperature is going to be as much issue with hookless wheels …. in summer you could pump your tyres up to 72 psi early in the morning (say 15 degrees C) by midday it could be 30 degrees C and you've now got 77 psi. Let’s just hope you haven't ridden up a big hill as well ☹

I think you guys are right, there is a HUGE lack of understanding about tire pressures, what is needed, what is recommended, etc. The numbers on the wall of tires are 1/2 of the maximum pressure to blow it off a hooked rim. EG if the max inflation number is 120psi, it can be expected to blow off the rim at around 240psi. Not sure about the lower number but I suspect it is similar that it is 100% above the minimum needed to reliably keep the tire on the rim. Then you get a hookless bead... It doesn't appear there are "Hookless" specific tires... so you can buy a hookless compatible tire and safely run it on a hooked rim... so the pressures are now dictated by the rim pressures, and the minimum pressure on some tires is greater than the maximum on the hookless tire... just to keep things confusing...

I have Roval wheels. I would not buy a hookless wheel. The disparity between pressure limits on the tire and rim is misleading. It will probably take a law suit against one of these manufacturers by someone who blew a tire off the rim and got hurt to stop this hookless nonsense! Hookless wheels are exceedingly stupid !

Hookless rims are a scam and should be avoided at all costs. See the video on Chris Miller's cycling vlog where they have the guy from Peak Torque as a guest. They also discuss this at length.

I don't trust the Peak Torque guy. It's been a while since I watched one of his videos, but I recall that he seemed to be working backwards from his prejudices in a couple of videos, then using his engineering background to try to justify them. That being said, I'm with you on hookless rims. I question the safety and don't use them.

I’m using hookless since a year and find them great! Cant see any performance disadvantages. Can’t trust anyone on KZitem! If Enve and Zipp arguably two of the biggest manufacturers have switched their entire line to hookless then they must have done their research, why would they take such a big gamble?

Let me tell you what I’m looking for in a wheel….it’s gotta be round….it’s gotta have a tire that doesn’t blow off. Hookless isn’t done baking yet, it’s clearly not ready for prime time. If the tire is easy to put on, it will be easy to come off.

I have a question for Jimmy, why are all bib shorts for small torso people? I am only 5:10 but as I have short legs and a longer body I can’t get bibs were the straps aren’t digging into my shoulders, even if I try to size up it makes little to no difference. I don’t know what to do at this stage as most of the gear is online, expensive and just gets annoying sending them back only for the bigger size to make no difference. Please help me. Maybe make one for me 😂
