Constructive criticism, even when coming from a selfless and positive place, is not always perceived as constructive or beneficial. Several factors can influence how it is received and its overall impact: 1. **Delivery**: The manner in which criticism is communicated is crucial. If it is conveyed with empathy and clarity, it is more likely to be received positively. However, even well-intentioned criticism can come across as harsh or judgmental if not delivered thoughtfully. 2. **Timing**: The context and timing of the feedback can affect its reception. Providing criticism during a stressful moment or in front of others can make it seem less constructive, regardless of intent. 3. **Relationship**: The relationship between the critic and the recipient plays a significant role. Feedback from a trusted, respected source is often more readily accepted than from someone perceived as less knowledgeable or authoritative. 4. **Specificity and Actionability**: Constructive criticism should be specific and actionable. Vague or broad comments are less helpful and can lead to confusion or frustration. 5. **Recipient's State of Mind**: The recipient’s emotional and mental state at the time of receiving feedback can influence how it is perceived. Someone who is defensive or insecure may not take even the most well-meaning criticism well. 6. **Cultural and Personal Differences**: Cultural norms and personal preferences also play a role. What is considered constructive in one culture or context might be perceived differently in another. For criticism to be truly constructive, it must be delivered with care, be well-timed, come from a credible source, and be specific and actionable. Additionally, the recipient must be in a receptive state of mind to appreciate and act on the feedback.

Great one Teju. I think the Yoruba equivalent of the Igbo proverb could be: Asakoko anti koko e, wan jo ma gbe nii. So not only the cocoa will suffer from the scorching sun, but so will the owner who keep eye on it till it dries.

Being opinionated is one of the most dangerous aspects of civilization. Opinions are like clothes, everyone is got one. Criticism can be constructive when it is actionable, objective, balanced, & supportive. It also build resilience & helps with growth. No one is indispensable. When people criticize you, it avails you the opportunity to reflect on things being said. Mr Babyface, you’ve done well, & I get your heartfelt outburst. However, you’re not in the best position to halt or discourage criticism. You’re a social media personality. Enjoy your weekend.

Hmm Thank you for this, these type of people exist all over the world. I remember just a couple of weeks ago i put out a dress i made on social media I a black person modelled the dress and in the comments section someone said it looked like clothes that slaves in the plantations wore! I went to look at the profile and it turns out they are Australian! I was totally discouraged!

Why will you be discouraged? Aren’t you proud of your own work? Why is it that the opinions of others have to validate your worth? The reaction of you feeling sad & disappointed is exactly what he/she wanted from you. The way I deal with social media is if I don’t know you on a personal level. Your comments or views can never get to me. And if you cannot handle people’s comments why not close your comment section. Just give them the option of either Liking it or waka pass. Anyhoo, stay strong.

Bro Teju fine boy, Please, Sir, you need to go beyond this and move on. I greatly enjoy your shows and the various personalities you have featured. I share your videos with so many people and they are all excited. It is good to read all the comments that followed your work, but your response to each should be with commenting back with clarifications, but not for you to make a video or show for such. Good job you are doing, please!

I wonder how people seek to force their ideas on others. Who made one a correcter of another. If you don't agree with someone better stay away than talk low of others efforts. If you haven't worn a shoe you never can tell where it pinches so refrain from criticizing others. Infact you voiced my opinions jare👍👍👍👍👍

@Teju Babyface - When we lose focus then we have time to even acknowledge this negative resistance. Person A can be harshly criticised and naturally will feel bad but will later use that criticism to become better or ignore and continue as usual. Person B can make a film as you said "And people comment I loved your show even though the audio was not clear but I look forward to your next work" - Or words to that effect, Now in a Nigerian context that same person may get a FALSE SENSE of being good at what they do but in reality they need to improve and would have missed "though the audio was not clear" aspect to improve. That aside I like your podcast and the guests are often very uplifting and gives me great pleasure. Keep it up. Jealousy full ground...notin do u!!!!

Just simply address people who portray negative criticisms. There are people who genuinely give constructive criticisms.
