Danny Seraphine is one of the best drummers ever that was never given he credit he so rightfully deserves. Neil Pert aint got nothing on Danny! and Terry Kath was a phenomenal vocalist and is missed dearly!

Yes, Pert was a mechanical drummer and they are a dime a dozen. Danny felt the music and played to it. Never cared for Niel Pert, boring.

Chris Pej I have a tape of Pert along with a dozen other drummers who recorded a tribute to Buddy Rich and after some miscues, Neil had to eliminate a few notes in order to lay the track down because he kept missing time signatures. I recall the director saying, "Let's just eliminate this and that notes so we can get this done. Will that help, Neil?" As a lifelong drummer, I long ago came to appreciate the genuine pros...the jazz guys like Rich and Seraphine who could accomodate "anything." Pert and so many other rock drummers are just pounders with great mic systems. After all, most of us who took drumming seriously whether we made it big or not realized any idiot can do a snare roll and around the world, skills mastered around age 12.

+Johnny Botts Although this is a post from some time back and don't recall the video clearly, I have to believe Peart's name was brought into the mix somewhere otherwise, I wouldn't have thought of him. My appreciation of Danny is his jazz licks which most hard rock drummers lack. But, don't get me wrong...I can't think of another drummer that could drive Rush like this guy. And, by the way, I've been drumming since 1964

I have been a drummer just a few years, self taught and didn't get to play a drum set until years later, in 1971 I found some albums left back from the kid that moved out. They were Chicago one. I listened tentatively, then when Chicago 2 came out, make me smile whole track " a girl from Buchanan " I thought Danny Seraphin was the drummer of all drummers.
@mediamannaman

Yes, pretty much the entire Chicago 2 album shows off this guy's talent. As a teen in the early 70's, I used to listen over and over to that album, just pretending I was the drummer! ;-) At the very end of this video, you see a great smile of satisfaction on his face. How cool that, about 45 years after first recording the song, this guy still LOVES his work. He is definitely one of the best ever.

As a drummer and drumming instructor myself, who has performed with many, many name artists, I think Danny Seraphine is a tremendous all-around drummer. He had, and still has, wonderful technique and musicality. I personally do not like to compare him to Neil Peart, who was a brilliant musician and performer. They approached drumming differently, but their roots were similar... that's all. Both were committed to clean, crisp, excellent technique and musicianship. I love both of them for different reasons.

The reason I know this is because took lessons from Cheryl Hall who also took lessons from Chuck. @stonesharve Check out Chicago Live in Japan 1972 and Chicago Live at Carnegie Hall. They used to be a true progressive jazz-rock outfit. Their horn arrangements, odd meters & especially the deliberately composed (as opposed to just jammed) polyrythmic interplay between all the different musical parts was very advanced. Only guys like Frank Zappa & Mahavishnu John Mclaughlin would even try stuff like that. They also had the extra Americana spirit there for a while that added the poetic touch.

This is the only thing you really need to know about how good Danny Seraphine is- Buddy Rich used to be a guest on the Johnny Carson Show all the time, and Carson would frequently ask him who he thought were the best drummers in the world ( after Buddy himself,of course). He would always say Ed Shaugnnessy, the drummer for Doc Severinsen's band on the show, but he would also always include Danny Seraphine in his list. Nuff said.

Chicago isn't selling out arenas anymore. They fill up amphitheaters & large theaters when they tour with other big names such as the Doobie Brothers or Earth Wind & Fire. Besides, playing bigger venues doesn't mean you're better. Bill Champlin is a great musician by himself & with Sons of Champlin. I recently saw Danny Seraphine perform with his group California Transit Authority. They only played "25 or 6 to 4" but that performance alone was killer. They made Chicago look like sell outs!!!

Really???????? Danny is a Jazz drummer playing Jazzy horn rock music. John Bonham is a rock drummer playing rock. That's why Danny got the boot from Chicago. They went more rock and his drumming didn't fit. As a Bass player for 40 years, I hate playing with a drummer that over plays like Danny. Too busy. BUT, he is a great drummer none the less for what he does.

@@tjrox They did not go to more rock.........more sappy ballads! I agree, different styles/drummers and both great but Chicago rocked in the early days and mellowed out by the mid '70's. Danny handled it all! From a drummer for over 55 years!

Gene Falls Ok Ballads that his silly busy right foot would not have fit. You do know that Jeff Porcaro ghosted all of the last album is credited for. Again, great drummer, but never progressed passed the Keith Moon over the top business. Music changed, he didn’t.

@@tjrox I am aware that Porcaro played on a few tracks. I assume you are aware that David Foster brought in many session players for other instruments for all of the albums he produced for them?? That "silly busy right foot", as you call it, played those ballads very well for many years. Have you heard him play recently?? Still playing great at 70 after a 15 year lay off and, in my humble opinion, has progressed wonderfully; much more focused on the groove! Wonder what Jeff would sound like at 70 (and he was another great one for sure!).....we will never know, drugs, I mean pesticides are dangerous!! I get it, you do not like him, I do. @mother66 Seraphine on early Chicago albums was one of the greatest drummers in terms of a combination of technique & perfect feel for the band he was playing in. He gets little respect today from the general public because most of them only know the sappy pop-group Chicago. Imboden is a great technician but lacks the true Seraphine feel that came from the intense non-stop 300 dates a year touring & constant playing & brotherhood that made the band the smokin' unit it was in the early 70s.

Love Danny and his apocalyptic thunder. Chicago is a total joke without him. What an embarrassing caricature of a once great band they are now. Total lack of class (and B.S.) from the horn section about Danny's "deteriorating skills", and "poor practice habits", but I'm not surprised, considering the source. Robert Lamm letting this happen to Danny saddens me greatly, though. I really expected more from him. God bless Danny.

Tris is technically very good, but he doesn't have what another commenter well calls Danny's "apocalyptic thunder." Compare Danny's approach to the refrain of the bracketing movements of this song to Tris' tepid, anemic approach. And - I say as a fan since about '71 - if they continue to do much once people see who they replaced Bill with, I'll be very surprised.
