I have a couple malls in my area, one alive and one that's been dead for a good while now. The one that's dead, I went to quite a lot with family as a kid, and I've got like a boat load of memories there and IT EVEN HAD A MOVIE THEATER! Makes me sad thinking about it being gone, but I know there's really no real reason why it should still be up. Though, it being abandoned gives me a wonderful opportunity to find a way in and to explore!

You should totally take photos if you do. Be careful though, don’t reveal locations (people tend to ruin the urbexing spots when they do), and I’d recommend going with someone else for the sake of safety :]

The mall I grew up going to is still around, but it's probably one of the most dead malls I've ever seen. It was always like that anyway since it was in a bad part of town, the air quality was always stale and turned on heat even in summer, mold, roaches...so I see why certain ones would fall under. (It fell after Sears and Macy's left. Only Belks and JC Penny's is left.) Which hits me in the stomach because when I snuck and took a Liminal Space photo of the closed Macy's in 2022, I realized I have a photo from 2011 of that exact spot with me standing in front of a Justin Bieber cutout. So while I see the decline coming..... I'm just not ready when it happens. I know they'll probably never come back. (Also, hey! I saw you followed me on Insta! What an honor!! ✨🤟)

honestly i think what also never really helped malls is how they are always in the most inconvenient places. once they are in an easier to access location, it’d actually draw in people instead of being somewhere in suburban isolation the Americana and Glendale mall are an example i can think of, they’re not plopped in the middle of a sea of asphalt like most malls in the US

In Germany most malls didn't die and they are doing quite well. Usually the malls here are connected to old historic town areas, tourist attractions and train stations, so people can combine their day trip to touristy areas, to restaurants etc. with a trip to the mall, which attracts more visitors than having malls separate from everything else. I also don't think online shopping will really kill malls, because atleast for clothing, you usually want to try that on and see if it fits and how you look in it, which is why so many malls nowadays have mainly clothing shops. For other things as well, many people still want to physically look at items, touch it and maybe test it, things you can't do in online shopping.

Canadian here. In my province, I know over half of them are doing fine, at least those located in suburban areas. The malls in Downtown Winnipeg, on the other hand, are not doing very well, and one of them might be redeveloped as offices soon. Tbh, my province doesn’t have a lot of malls to begin with, which contrasts with the other ones like Ontario and Alberta, and both of these have a lot. Overall, I feel like most of the Canadian Malls located in the suburbs, as well as maybe a few in downtowns like the Toronto Eaton Centre, seem to be doing fine, but even then, Canada also has its own share of dead malls (iirc The Edmonton City Center is dying), though they aren’t as well documented as the ones in the US.

My area seems to collect active malls. If one dies it is simply replaced by a new one. No, most people don't "just order it online". Stores just don't list everything they have and online sellers simply won't have what remains. (Really, people order their week's supplies online? Sounds like those Japanese young hermits to me.) Environmentally, inconvenience also comes at a cost - if everything isn't in the one place, you will have an increased need for a car...

Man I love a good dead mall, in my city there used to be quite a few but now there's really only 2 left and only 1 of those actually is somewhat thriving. In some ways it's sad to see them go, but when you think about it, as a business model they just don't really work anymore. You don't go to the mall to go to one store unless it's the only store in town that has what you need and at this point, most would just order the item online rather than go through Mall parking, then walking into and through the mall to get to the one store, hence why those outdoor outlet mall/shopping center's tend to replace them when they're torn down, since you just drive to the specific store you need. You go to the mall to go to the mall itself, visit the food court, shop around, go to a movie, etc. Or in my case to take liminal space photos because the place is 60 years old and on it's last legs.

It's interesting to see such a massive differences between different continents. I live in Ukraine and it looks like the mall culture here is not at all dead, in fact big companies fight for who has the biggest mall in the country and aim to build the largest one in Europe. The biggest malls manage to survive even in the wartime. Though the new reality that is discussed in the video is noticable as well as it looks like that the newest malls are more focused on large hypermarkets and amusement parks or some distinctive features like indoor garden for instance. The more expensive shops usually remain empty, that feels weird passing through them and see workers silently wait for you to enter. In some cases the parts that are far away from the entrances remain empty with no tennants to notice their existence so when you pass the final security guard you enter the barely lit liminal space.

From what i can gather there may be another reason or two that malls are dying off (At least in the states) with one reason being that there were just too many of them being built, particularly being built in unviable locations that were doomed from the start, Plus a lot of them just failed to adapt and evolve. From what i've heard Dead malls were a thing before the advent of online shopping and the pandemic but those two reasons sure did hastened the decline of the mall, Not to mention the American middle class that once supported them is now ever shrinking and increasingly unstable. Dead Malls seem to be a prime urbex adventure if i ever end up doing it and i've been curious about them for some time. On a final note all i can say is that if Malls want to be still viable going forward they do nned to start offering more things beside shopping and must offer options that can't be replicated online, othrwise its "Malls well thet ends well".

Malls in urban areas are doing oddly well. Also, recent polls suggest that Gen Z age folks are prioritizing in person shopping over online. Malls are not particularly sustainable, but I don't think it is fair to blame them for the packaging, plastic waste etc. that the products sold in them generate. Those same products are still being made, bought, and thrown away, just from somewhere else. I would be interested to know whether the individual packaging and fuel used to deliver stuff to individuals is more or less wasteful than the energy it takes to light and climate control a mall. It is almost certain that blocks of stores like downtowns or even strip malls that are accessible to population centers and not climate controlled are less wasteful than both malls and online, though. Great video as always. :)

Yup, malls in urban areas are doing well. I live in the suburbs but some kids will literally drive to the city over (a little under thirty minute drive) just for the mall because our local mall, while not dead, just doesn't have the selection and size the other mall has. I was actually there just this Sunday (but didn't have much money to throw around). There is a dead mall more towards the city in my area, as well. The only reason why people still visit that one is probably because it has the closest Cheese Cake Factory. It's almost completely empty and is far worse off than my local mall which is sad as I remember getting my first Build A Bear there.

I’m glad most of the malls in my area have survived the mall purge and are holding up pretty well so far. Still, it’s upsetting that other malls in the country are dying, which is one reason why I don’t like online shopping. Another reason is that people are too addicted to convenience these days. Even if a mall shuts down for a whole different reason, online shopping still finishes it off by putting an Amazon warehouse in its place if said mall were to be demolished. I say online shopping has got to go, as it’s a serious threat to physical stores and possibly the economy.

It should be noted that car centric design, zoning laws and the destruction of American cities to build them for cars has been a big factor in the drastic decline of small business and the rise of these shopping hotspots. I think that one reason why people in Americans prefer convenience over everything else is that driving does suck when everybody is forced to do so and the lack of local third places, great public spaces and active transportation methods does serious mental harm to a person. The Netherlands is a perfect example of not paving over it's cities! They have the happiest suburbs, happiest drivers and happiest small businesses in the world and that is because they have so many transportation options, the businesses are where the people are and yet they've still got a mall culture. They almost chose the path of The United States but backed down at the last chance when people began protesting against car centric design.
