Just be warned, the "gold standard" is not a definitive test. You'd need test several different sizes with people or dummies in different positions. The concept of Aero scaling and how things become more aerodynamic as they get smaller seems to be lost in cycling marketing.

@@Hambini Yeah but it is the only somewhat Mainstream publication that actually puts in an effort to test nearly all bikes on Aero properties and has a somewhat proper Testing protocol. It has some Issues and it is interesting that the German bikes often come out really good.... But it is way ahead of the whole english speaking media that basically just parrots the marketing from the manufacturers when it comes to Aero claims. Dave Arthurs testing was maybe well intentioned but his position on the bikes was so different that there is basically nothing to be learned there, except for that Body position and Fit makes way more of a difference then even a Top of the line Aero bike to a Climbing bike....

your comments re: aero bikes reminded me of an article I read maybe 4-5 years ago, I believe it was in one of the UK based cycling mags. They did a test of the top aero bikes at that time, and found the Madone to be the most aero, closely followed by most others, with the Scott Foil sort of middle of the bunch. The Foil was one of the few bikes in the test that didn't have integrated brakes, so to see just how much difference the brakes make, they replaced the direct-mount Shimano front brake with a TriRig Omega X brake (best non-integrated option). A simple switch to the Foil from mid-pack to on par with the Madone. For most of the aero bikes at the time, the differences were so small as to be within the range of something as simple as cutting your cable housing as short as possible. Not surprisingly, the rider position was far more important than anything to do with the bike.

SUPER IMPORTANT a study was done and found that DAY flashing lights front and back were the most effective safety measure road cyclists could make. @nluisa

I started using them after two near misses at crossings where a driver stopped, only to move in front of me at the last minute. They didn't want to hit me, they simply did not notice me. In one of those situations I was descending in the shade, black bike and discreet kit. Since using the lights, I noticed several situations where the driver was going to move, only to stop after looking my way. Never had any near misses since then. And I definitely think lights will make a difference in rear view mirrors or in foggy mornings. I don't think the rear light really makes a difference reducing close shaves, though. Traffic density, time of day, and day of the week, does. Also, it's simply easier to spot something heading the same way just meters away. Nevertheless, I know from experience how poor visibility there is driving into sunsets/sunrises, especially will less than spotless clean windscreens. I think bright rear lights in those conditions are really helpful to spot a cyclist in advance. PS: for those who say 'but the drivers are the one who should pay attention' I would say, how many people only drive with 100% eye sight, zero stressors playing in their head, clean windscreens, 0% alcohol in their blood, a night well slept, not talking to anyone in the car, more than enough time to get to places, etc? Until this is the reality, I'll stick to my lights.

Dave Arthur's test unfortunately is useless because the fit between the two bikes was different and he mentioned that in the video. Also you can't test two bikes with the rider because the rider's position (even if he tries to be the most consistent he can) will always be slightly different and that will make more of a difference than the frame itself...if only he had tested without riding them... Go and check Tour Mag numbers!

To me testing without a rider is a net less, the numbers will be more consistent, but I've seen some frame features designed to be aero when a rider is on the bike (like the Ribble Ultra), which may not test well without a rider + bike package
@epizzoli6104

@@nerocoaching actually the proper way is to do what Tour Mag is doing: testing with a half mannequin so basically legs and half body that is fixed on the saddle and pedals and stays still. Testing bike aerodynamics with a real person is impossible as even a slight head tilt will make a climbing frame more aero than an aero frame. We had this problem when we tested the then unreleased Colnago V4RS against the SL7. Then again the "aero package" thing is still very debated. Faster wheels will usually be faster than say Bontragers on the Madone if the outer widths are roughly similar

Air drag increases as the square of velocity and is measured in Newtons (SI). Power increases as the cube of velocity and is measured in Watts. So when you double your speed, aerodynamic drag increases 4x, but power (watts) increases 8x. To normalize the difference between drag and power for cyclists, the wind tunnel engineers convert aerodynamic drag to a measure of the Power required to overcome the relative increase/decrease in drag. This makes it easy to understand, for example, that a rider would need to input +5 watts to move bike A at the same speed as bike B.

There's an aerodynamics figure in bike reviews in German "Tour Magazine". I didn't go through every single bike, but from what I've seen it shows that the most aero bike is the 2021 Canyon Aeroad followed by the Specialized Tarmac SL7, then some other aero-categorized bikes (like Cube Litening or the older Trek Madone) and Pinarello Dogma F and then a bigger gap to 2023 Canyon Ultimate, which is according to that testing faster than the newest Giant Propel and significantly faster than the Giant TCR David Arthur was comparing the Ultimate to. The Tour Magazine tests the bikes with only artificiant legs and no body.

I think rear lights are especially needed when you are on longer climbs on main roads (like in Switzerland). You are so much slower than the cars and the flashing helps to make you stand out more and alert drivers that there is a slow vehicle in front.

Great episode guys! Interesting discussion about KZitem content. We are a UK based amateur team showcasing race vlogs, race comms (for those trainer sessions!) but also the side of the sport not a lot of people see - the volunteers and what it takes to run races in the UK. Be great to hear your thoughts!

46:40 surely then there’ll be a load of metal further out in the wind with the cassette and also maybe it will be less stable because there’s no support from the hub part that you put the cassette on.

They already sculp out the chainstay just to fit the little chainring on most bikes wanting wider tyres. Never work the other way around without pushing out the a factor

As an oldster, I get waves from most other oldsters on bikes or just walking when I'm riding one of my MTB's or 'bents (no longer ride a road bike). I also get waves from younger folks on MTB's, but no waves at all from roadies of any age. Conversely, when I rode road bikes in the past, I generally didn't acknowledge fully decked out roadies (which you describe), and I don't recall any of them acknowledging yours-truly. Internecine wars between various types of cyclists have been going on since I was a young rider 50 years ago. Just the other day some teenage BMX rider dissed me when we passed on a trail. I was on my Transition MTB. Some things never change. BTW, I agree that rear red lights get a lot of attention, particularly at night. When it's hot, I wear a sweat band under my helmet - it keeps the sweat out of my eyes. As per "what equipment do you bring in case you have a flat?", Lance Armstrong asked Hincapie on his podcast what he carried for flats - George answered, "my phone, so I can call my wife." LA agreed. These days, me too.

I only watch KZitem on my television, laid out on the couch, popcorn or cookies at the ready. Oh, forgot to mention - with my cycling cap on. BTW, surgical gloves and wipes..... I like that idea.

Can someone just give Jesse an SL7 to do a comparison to his rim TCR. He has all the watts and knowledge to do the best in real life comparable video. Hills, flats, descending, sprints I know he would do the best comparison video on the internet for this

Great podcast/youtube channel - great chemistry/banter and lively topics - keep it coming! On testing - Implosion of cycling journalism has killed useful objective reviews/testing, with few exceptions like Tour Magazine. Used to buy a fair amount of kit and new bikes when I had some confidence about quality or performance gains. I have a perfectly rideable Tarmac SL6, and very little the bike industry has released since has gone through objective data-driven testing to verify improvements, except in small corners of the industry like chain friction and tire rolling resistance. Everything plays like an infomercial or advertorial now - all marketing to convince you to pay more $$$ for what??? Without some objective, data driven testing, the cycling recession has shown the industry has turned bikes into luxury goods - no reason to buy/upgrade/replace when it's just bling you're buying.

They'll do an initial release with a one by set up, use that data for their % improvements marketing. Release a two by 3 months later. Then next frame(+wheel)set release, they'll do the same. But use the old two by data to compare for marketing, with the new one.

Got a trek Madone slr 6, even after watching David Arthur’s wind tunnel. Loved the handling on the test ride, loved the look, and loved that I could obtain a top spec frame thanks to the 105 spec. The geometry also seems like a more natural fit for me than my old bike, a 2021 giant defy advanced 1. On the road it definitely feels faster than the defy I was riding with Reynolds AR41 wheels. 35kph+ feels like less effort to maintain. Most surprising part was the bontrager Aeolus pro 51 wheels - they (and the frame) are really good in crosswinds, especially for the depth. My old wheels seemed to get a strong push that built up and suddenly collapsed. The Aeolus wheels seem to release the pressure build up sooner, leading to less sharper twitches in the front end. All subjective and qualitative observations, YMMV

It's a great bike no doubt, questionable seat post hole but otherwise solid. Going from the geometry of an endurance bike to an aero bike though, no doubt you feel faster. A lot of that will likely be body position but if it feels comfortable and you're enjoying it - more power to you!

@@isitrachelorj3953 I bought the bike during the pandemic shortages - yup I’m one of those cyclists. It was basically the only carbon bike in town in my size so I snapped it up. But I never fell in love with the bike, and never really got on with the geometry. I kept trying to turn it into a race bike. I jumped on the Trek because I fell in love with it. Nothing objectively wrong with the Defy, just didn’t click with it.

@@rsam346 thanks! the comfort has really surprised me, given that it’s a race bike. I’m running 28mm tires which no doubt helps but there is definitely flex in the isospeed cantilevered seatpost too.

Total build weight should (often doesn't) include all things that don't come off without tools. This includes bottle cages, pedals, computer mount. I've noticed manufacturers only quote frame weight even though they are selling a complete build. It just plays in the back of my mind that not that long ago every top end bike was sub 6.8kg and mechanics added weights.

You guys need top tube bags. Probably the most convenient thing ever for keys, nutrition, earphones case... No aero drag to worry about. Easier to access items than a barbag OR back pocket! Chris I've got the same setup with iPhone on Quadlock and a Wahoo both at the front. Works great.
