@@joshuahornsby767 Buddy born 1917; Weckl born 1960! Could be why you think Weckl was more well rounded, and versatile? But on the same comparison, you could say Vinnie Colaiuta and Dennis Chambers, were more well rounded and more versatile than Weckl!

@@randallbrown3317 What do their birthdays have to do with anything? Buddy was an awesome jazz/big band drummer, but he never really went beyond that. Dave simply has way more styles under his belt....Fusion, hard rock, pop, Latin.... He's also the ultimate soloist. His solos always BUILD, it's never just "look what I can do". And NO drummer is more versatile than Vinnie.
@randallbrown3317
Жыл бұрын
@@joshuahornsby767 Buddy didn't have to go beyond that! Fact is he lead his own band for over 20+ years. He was considered the greatest drummer on the planet for DECADES! I am a big fan of Weckl, None of those drummers though could match Buddy's playing in those Memorial Tapes, when it came to playing with his band...NOT ONE OF THEM! As Steve Gadd said, Buddy's left hand was an entity of its own. To me his hands and feet were all equal in the sense that he didn't have a weak limb. His rolls on those tight heads, and especially on the snare left ZERO room for error. He was put on the planet to be a drummer! Remember Buddy for many decades has and still is the Benchmark, not Weckl, Chambers, Colauita, etc. etc.
@joshuahornsby767
Жыл бұрын
@@randallbrown3317 The fact remains, versatility is a special skill and SHOULD be valued. Put Buddy in a Fusion band, or something requiring Latin grooves, and he'd have been lost. I'll gladly admit he was likely the most influential drummer of all time, but there are tons of more complete, well-rounded players. Regarding the BR tribute, that was Vinnie, Dave and Steve all bringing their unique styles and battling it out, not necessarily an attempt to copy Buddy note for note. Weckl is also far more musical than Buddy ever was, musicality was never his forte, not to mention his footwork was nothing above average.

Not at all, Neil Peart was invited to the Buddy Rich Memorial 1991 and he and Cathy Rich hit it off as great friends and he produced the first of two Burning For Buddy DVD's where they invited world class drummers to play the tracks with the BR Big Band. Neil had no idea how to play Buddy Rich and he had to work hard to do it, where some of the more technical cats, like Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, and Dave could do it easily. Neil did well and had huge fan support, but it was after that he brought back the greats and produced the series, and in #2, he was fascinated by how great Steve Smith had gotten and asked him about it. Steve told Neil about Freddie Gruber. Neil said once that "anything Steve says is something I will listen to."
