The use of actual 3d models, while laborious and labour intensive, really beats CGI hands down. The air-battle scenes in 'Turning Tide', for example, when compared to a movie like 'Red Tails', shows how much more realistic and effective model work is on screen. Worth mentioning also that, as a modeler myself, the quality of the models used, in terms of design, detailing, painting, weathering etc. is incredibly well executed. xx SF

I think both disciplines have their place in the world, but it's really not fair to say that modelling beats CGI hands down. CGI is absolutely unlimited in what it can do. Red Tails is good quality CGI but it looks very 'gamey'. Another CGI team might have made it look a lot more realistic. You are comparing (here) world class modelling to decent CGI, which is not really a fair fight. I am (as you may have guessed) a CGI artist, but I am also very happy indeed that miniatures and modelling are still a thing in films. And long may that continue!! Wishing you all the best with your modelling.

Absolutely stunning David, you have just proved that there's always and forever going to be a place for miniature modelling effects than just high res polygon cgi models in any sized film set whenever film teams are up against the clock within heavy time constraints! Turning Tide you did with Andrew David was absolutely epic, it just goes to show that good old miniature model making methods are still just as affective as their cgi counterparts! Absolutely superb bro! 🙂👍

@@generaalnaarling No it hasn't. You're trying to retcon history. You can't pull a fast one on me. Films in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's had rich, glorious colour palettes, particularly those from the 50's and 60's. Don't pull that postmodern cognitive relativist "subjectivity" bullshit on me. Real life isn't restricted to just two colours. It would be depressing as fuck if it was.

Seen a lot of this guys stuff on KZitem lately and I'm glad to see someone doing this but just wish he'd give the digital effects a rest. All that lens flare and bloom makes it looks just as fake as CGI unfortunately. There are some incredible shots in here but they are all lessened by the bloom. Looks like it was made in Oblivion.
