Before the digital age, filmmakers were bound to use miniatures for pretty much every special effect sequence. It’s a technique that quickly faded when CGI was introduced, although directors sometime still fall back to the old trick. So let’s take a look at the history of scale models in motion pictures, and let’s find out of if it still has a future.
The first ever usage of a miniature model dates back to 1902, with ‘A Trip to the Moon’.
Over the years, the quality improved and they kept using it until computers came along in the early nineties. The real turning point was Steven Spielberg’s classic ‘Jurassic Park’. If he made it a few years earlier it would have been done with only miniature dinos. Instead he fully exploited the new power of computers and kept the usage of scale models to a minimum.
