I like the outcome of your hammer. of course different people come up with different solutions to the issues of the hammer and keeping it functioning properly and striking true. that being said, you gave me some excellent ideas and advice to approach my power hammer build. thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience here on KZitem...

Really appreciate this video. I saw the other guy's hammer and this one is taking the cake. That bearing cam is a serious game changer. On behalf of us backyard blacksmiths getting by with what we can, thank you for posting this.

hey Brad, thanks for sharing! your idea to have the motor fixed to the pedal and thus tightening the v-belt is very practical and I will use that for my first small build. thank you!!!

Great job, by using the large bearing I recon that the bearing is pulling the hamer down as well as pushing it up, giving it more force.

Hi Brad. Great design. Can I suggest an improvement. Replace the U bracket between he bearing and the hammer with a spring, like from a motor bike. It increases the hitting force because the spring is storing energy on the up stroke and delivering that on the down stroke. You should also find that this will smooth out the stresses delivered to the frame.

Brad your duel time is too long. Maybe the hammer should be floating at bottom dead center of the cam when the power is off. Maybe you can raise the hammer or lower the anvil. The hammer should hit the work on the harmonic vibration.

I would think to also make this to flip over to the pin side of the hammer to stretch the working metal but haven't seen it done but when I do mine it will be the first and will work... But I like yours and fear that huge bearing will cost me if I could find it.Is that from them huge mining trucks ? Thanks for passing on knolege

Very good idea but why make the frame from timber? I use my power hammer very often and with white-hot metal at fire-welding temperature. Your timber would start to combust!

by using a three to four inch tube for your spring tubes you make center of your springs unusable and so deform them

Man, the portrait video format is awful, there is a lot of talking, and it would be nice to actually see you hit some red hot metal rather than a piece of wood. BUT! for those two rather large flaws, I shall give you this. This appears to be an extremely well built Da-Vinci style power hammer, and this video shows off everything such that anyone wanting to build one like it, could grasp the concept, and with a little ingenuity, do so.

`I will never knock (pun intended) anyone's efforts to build a better mousetrap... You had me worried when you commented that you did not know if the hammer weighed 6 or 8 lbs because it had no writing on it? Just weigh it on your bathroom scale... Now that you have made a prototype, you can make a metal frame & transfer all of the components accordingly... There are too many safety issues to even start mentioning them. The super loose drive belt needs to be re-thought... The large round piece of rod that you are holding in the end of the video is impressive.. I would almost pay money to see you move that steel (red hot) into a large knife or a sword, with your machine.. You may want to have a para-medic, standing by.. I do commend your efforts Mr. Turnbough
