That's one thing I couldn't understand in '81. I was in the snare line. We had some monsters in the soprano line, and I would here them during rehearsals in the spring, but they just didn't stand out like in '80. But the difference overall in the brass between '80 and '81 was huge, though they were honking by Prelims!

Hello, it's 2024 and I heard this live! in 1980. You would never know it from this recording but the drum intro is one of the loudest thing in drums I ever heard! From one of the finest drum lines to ever step foot on a football field they were so together they didn't have to pound the drums to produce LOUD. Great corps, power horn line, great drum line and 1980 is among the finest years of the classic DCI era.

I don't think any other corps or marching band will play ITS like Bridgemen (and I've watched several versions). Degree of difficulty for the brass, full corps choreography and driving percussion is signature Bridgemen! Puts a lump in my throat.

I miss corps period. I was a banner in the late 1970's back when M&M was judged by judges counting off ticks. If someone was off by even a little the judge could literally stand there and make tick marks on his clipboard. Made performing extremely stressful. I'm glad they at least got rid of that.

They did it first and I remember this as if it was yesterday. They were the first one to do it and that pushed Earth, Wind, and Fire further than any other one else which lead even high school marching bands to play this selection. That sound that put down was far better the any other band after them could try to produce.

Although there are a number of contenders, I think In the Stone is the essential Bridgemen production. Maybe because (with the probable exception of 1977) it was their most competitive season, but however you slice it, it had the swag, the attitude that Hoffman designed, supported by the best drum line (and writing) in DCI history, and charts by Larry Kerchner that just oozed hipness. Just glancing at the videos you see that attitude perfectly reinforced by the guard, who might have been teenagers (or early 20s) from New Jersey until the lights came up and the curtain opened, but once the first note of music sounded, they were the embodiment of Bridgemen cool. Other contenders for best ever production (for me) were "Spanish Dreams" (78), Pagliacci (77), Land of Make Believe (76), and One (76) if only because of the backwards fall at the end in Philadelphia prelims. I love Boogie Down (84) as well, but it's hard to offer a tune that wasn't heard in finals. Great corps, great image, great vision, great execution of that vision. One of the best, ever. There will never be another corps (or anything else, for that matter) remotely like the Bayonne Bridgemen.

I was just about 9 years old when my brother's high school marching band covered this. The band director was an obvious Bridgemen fan -- he even had new uniforms that year that were complete Bridgemen copycats. I have read the comments here and I understand that my brother's high school band probably would have been ridiculed by some of you out there.
