Self-stigma is the term used to describe when a person with a mental health difficulty internalises negative mental health stereotypes and believes them to be true in themselves.
Self-stigma can be a barrier to someone seeking help for their mental health or to their mental health recovery.
Trying to recognise self-stigma and understanding the impact that it can have are some of the most important steps in dealing with it.
Dr Gráinne Donohoe of our Academic Institute here in St Patrick's Mental Health Services explains what self-stigma means. Gary Kiernan of our Service User and Supporters Council discusses the lived experience of self-stigma and the difference that overcoming self-stigma and practicing self-compassion can make.
