As someone who used 5/3/1 religiously for many years (and ended up deadlifting 605lbs. thanks to it), seeing your training evolve in this way has been refreshing and inspiring, Jim. I’m gravitating more towards basic calisthenics and have purchased a weight vest to supplement the movements in my own WALRUS journey. I’m making progress, feeling good, and enjoying training much more as a result. Thank you for always sharing your knowledge and leading by example, Jim!

I tried this workout this morning but incorporated pull-ups in with the push-ups and squats. I now know why you didn't do pull-ups in this workout. I must be really terrible at shuffling cards because every set of pull-ups I kept catching 10's and face cards. Once I was about 60 pull-ups in I caught an ace and had to resort to just push-ups and squats for the rest of the workout. This was done with a 25lbs vest. BTW, I'm a 49 years old meat head that's been doing mostly 531 for about 8 years or more. Love the content and please keep up the great work.

Ryan - if you want to try pull-up/chins with this workout, here's my advice. Use the cards for squats and push-ups. Between each set of squats and push-ups, perform 2 reps (or whatever reps) of chins/pull-ups. The 2 reps is a constant and doesn't change. This will allow you to do the chins in the workout and not be affected by the Card Gods.

A deck of cards workout has been an on and off go to for years for me. I like doing push ups, pull ups, squats, and burpees. I always do 12 per face card and 15 for aces, but the overall reps are lower because there’s 4 exercises instead of 2. Great vid.

I'm amazed at your ability to get up and down off the ground so easy...I could use a lot of time just getting down and back up. Wonder if I could start this a time per week with say 1/2 a deck? Could take me more time than my camera's SD card just to do that!

Spoken like a well-seasoned lifter who knows a thing or two...about a thing or two. Best advise I can give you is that if you do make a change - be ready to get your ass kicked and be humbled. It's always a kick in the Richard - all those years of explosive training, sprints, jumps, singles is great for strength training. But with this stuff, it's an ass kicker. Remember to start too light and progress slow. You wouldn't expect a beginner lifter to squat 500 for 10 reps - so don't expect YOU to do a high amount of work on this stuff. It's a totally different way of training.

Im a little hesitant to talk about finances. I can say this without hesitation though -my wife and I live very, very far below our means. We aren't in debt, never spend money we don't have and don't do dumb shit EVER. And it's been 13 year of this, day in, day out. And to be fair, Mason is in college now so he's not on our grocery list. And James, for whatever reason, has never eaten himself full/stuffed. When he's done, he's done. Hell, he's never drank anything other than water. it's a good question but I have no secrets other than "don't spend what you don't have." Then do this for a long, long time. Life hands you enough uppercuts to your Richard - don't abuse yourself with debt.

John - it's a quote from Todd Winkler. I saw a video on him; he is a murderer and during his trial, he blurted out, "You are not samurai!" I believe he also mentioned "Bushido". It's ridiculous because he also says it with an accent. Proof that truth is always stranger than fiction. I'm always talking trash/shit to myself when I train. I'm grateful to be able to train and this is all part of the fun of being in there (for me).

Hello Sir, I believe in one of your articles about this style of training, you'd stated that you'd surprisingly noticed some hypertrophy since adopting it and dropping bar bells. Do you still find this to be the case?
@JimWendler
Жыл бұрын
Yes, provided you are eating and training hard enough. It also depends on where you start; if you are a PRO bodybuilder, you are going to get smaller. If you got chicken legs and haven't been consistent - you'll put on some muscle. I'm 48 years old - putting on muscle isn't a huge priority for me. But if you are 20 years old and put the hand on the flame of hate - you'll be fine. I just don't see a lot of young lifters willing to do that because it's uncomfortable. But then again, there weren't a lot decades ago, either. If you want something, go get it.

@JimWendler I appreciate your response, I'm not coming from a professional bodybuilding or powerlifting background or any single particular focus, I've had a mix of modalities that were aimed at keeping me "well rounded " for military and first responder work. However now at age 30, I have certain joints talking to me and I don't always like what they have to say. I'm finding that a mix of your current style combined with measurable isometrics via something called an Isochain (basically a bar with a scale in it) I'm able to still get the sensation of "lifting heavy " without being in the hurt locker for days after. I'd like to up the anty a bit more with the weight vest based off what I'm seeing with it. I think it's like you said, the vest gives you what you put into it, but while keeping the body optimally functioning.
