I feel you! I have the same challenge! Here is what you do: get two,stackable, nice, clear plastic bin with a lid at about a 50/60 litres volume size (I'm Norwegian so I do Litres). Lable one : "up size" and with the date you packed it. Lable the next "down size" with the date you packed it. Fill them with "up": clothes that are currently too big. "Down" : currently too small. Pack them neatly and nicely 😊❤️ it feels good to care for your things. When your done put them somewhere in your home where you don't see them everyday or run into them like a storage room, an attic or a closet away from the closet where you get dressed. The only clothes that matter are the ones that fit you RIGHT NOW. To feel ok with how you are NOW. Seeing clothes that don't fit, in your wardrobe every day, is bad for your mind and self esteem. Do this and you don't have to waste anything and you can let time test the items in the boxes. If your body changes: they are there and ready for you. If you miss them they are there and ready for you. If after a year you haven't used any of it just take them straight uto the donation center. Set an alarm in your phone one year ahead in time when you pack the boxes. I hope this works for you!

@@Miss_Annlaug I did almost the same thing and it worked out so well! I was messy for a long time. I was 34 with 3 kids, husband, pets, house, garden… before it clicked that the only person tidying up was me!! No wonder I was stressed and depressed and my life falling apart. I started putting things away as I used them, life-changing. Decluttering came next (no more just-in-case hoarding), later I adjusted my shopping attitudes. It all took years and is ongoing but life is so much more manageable. I am now a grandmother and kind of wish I‘d been like this for my own kids, but enjoy things how they are now, it‘s so much calmer and more peaceful as well as less work 😀

I see all these clean and decluttered homes in the minimalism videos and it makes me freak out inside thinking it needs more stuff all over! Like how some people get stressed from a mess... I get stressed from seeing the lack of stuff. *edit: I realized... My 5 year old self lost my daddy to prison. My mom and our family moved into a BRAND new home completely clean, and empty from our move... I guess I loved the home so much... But all I wanted to do was fill it with things like we had before... But I really just wanted to fill it with my daddy again. Sheesh... 💡 Lol! He came home 6 years later, and don't worry, the lack of personal items while in prison helped him jump on board with my feelings of lacking, and we filled that house up right away. 😂😂😂 ...lost him to covid a few months ago. 17 years with you were better than the 6 years without you. I love you, stuff and all... But I need to learn to live with less now. Less stuff, not less you. ❤ #RIPDad

They start out as "decluttering zones" like you also mention here, but then over time I don't do anything with them coz taking the time to sort through them is just... brain-numbing 😅 so for a procastinator like me, I just need to dump as I go otherwise the decluttering zone never gets dumped!

Glancing around the house (in my mind), we have at least one "dumping ground" in every single room. A chair in a corner on the way to the next room. Any flat surface on the way to somewhere. Or any corner out of the way. I need to redesign my "stuff" life. I did successfully eliminate one major hotspot or dumping ground in the past. I moved the dining room table away from a pass through / walkway location by swapping the living room and dining room locations. Stays clear now, as people are not passing by it to dump onto, unless intentionally using it. And we intentionally did not replace with a coffee table.

I'm finding it's a hard process. Why did I buy all this.. books unread, clothes unworn, things unused.. I've sold some things but that came come with some complications at times, people out to scam on selling sites, giving your address to people you don't know.. I've only been burned a few times, and had a nutjob at my door today.. it's the minority but it's still really off-putting. I do it to try to gain back some peace I guess,from the guilt of wasting money. Not sure it's worth it though when things go wrong. I've donated a lot, I'm good with that I get to give back. Part of me wants to read the books I have, maybe if I free up time elsewhere I could read them.. who knows. Part of me wants it gone now! My clothes.. I tried everything on.. I dislike so much of it. The reality my body has changed, gotten older, clothes I have don't look like they used to.. I don't own much I love, there's no decent clothing because I clearly was about quantity over quality.. I only have one or two of things left, but they're not that nice fitting nor good quality.. but I hate shopping, so how do I get something decent.. I'm not sure if it's normal to struggle like this. I hope it is on some level. Honestly, at times during this I'm up, sometimes quite low. I won't give up.. I guess it's just an eyeopener. I certainly won't be buying clothing that I don't need or is just 'ok' from now on. Your voice is quite calming! I need that right now! Thanks :)

Now I don't want to put anything on my table when I have a vase of fresh wildflowers from my yard in the middle of the table. It's been a battle for me to keep the futon in my office from being a dumping ground but knowing I have to sleep on it when Dad comes next week is helping. I just need a more long term way to avoid it.

Take a moment to observe your habits and why those places tend to be key dumping grounds for you Lynne. We might have to make a few adjustments in the way we do things day to day. Just something to think about. Keep growing and learning on your journey!

You spoke about the place where the clutter had a habit to centralize and I suddenly realized it was my synthesizer that was cluttered the most. And that is though I want to be a composer, I try to study something about it and... And it is just that my instrument is unused burnt under the mountain of some stuff. It is very depressive to clearly see that now after you have said the point. Thank you, it in some way just opened my eyes. I need to do something about this whole situation.

I’ve been watching several decluttering, downsizing folks for the past few years and have learned good points, tips, tools. Found you this past week and I must say your tips, tools, points, though at times repeat others which is a good thing, affirming, repeating = a change that sticks. What I’m finding here is new tips, concepts and food for thought. It’s like I’ve been weaned off the milk and I’m now eating the steak and potatoes 😂 Thanks Ron for bringing the concept of decluttering and minimizing within one’s lifestyle choices up a notch 👍🏽 God bless

So I am working towards decluttering my life and living with less to help destress. However, my partner is living with a different mentality...ah, hoarder mindset, actually. Any advice on how to find a happy medium or middle ground?

I get overwhelmed by too many stuff. I would love minimalism, but I’m living with my husband and son who love to keep things.. Is it even possible to be a minimalist while living with people who clearly are not? Anyone there who has experience?

Want less mess - have less stuff! Organizing doesn't de-clutter, either does storage. Moving it around or stalling letting go won't give you simplicity. Dealing with issues of keeping junk to begin with will lead you down that minimalism path.

Hahaha, my dumping ground is the floor in my office... I have this tendency where I forget things so I put everything "I need to do" out where I can see it. But then I just get overwhelmed.. Sigh. Obviously not that important right? Yeah... working through that part lol. This was an awesome video! Thank you so much :D Anna

Good tips! I'm glad to see that I've implemented most of them in my life already. My biggest issues right now are: I have a donation bag that is full (and heavy) but the place I want to donate it to is far-ish away, so I need to arrange transport, and: I'm having an in-between type week, just came back from a trip, got some new supplies etc, but the stuff hasn't found its place yet... So my table has the catch-all feeling, and deep down I'm a messy person so as soon as an area is cluttered I am tempted to just add to the mess. I know it will just take me half an hour to figure it out, an hour maybe, but it seems like a big thing. Going to follow your advice and just do a small thing today, a small thing tomorrow and keep the momentum going!
@RonaldLBanks

Yes build that momentum up over time and before you know it you’ll be rolling and that messy with be gone. In addition to that you’ll naturally start to develop new habits that will help prevent that same messy from coming back. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask! Keep growing!
