You can choose how much you contribute per month (the average is a few bucks, which adds up to the total you see on the left). It's a new way of supporting people who make stuff you like, and I prefer it to models where I keep videos behind a pay wall. For anyone who doesn't do the Patreon thing, I'm just grateful to have you as part of the community!

I have been a practicing chiropractor over 30 years. I can tell you this man is an artist. I love his clarity, his energy, his focus, knowledge and apparent total love for his art. In one of his videos he states "First contact (with the patient/client) should be about asking a question, not making a statement." Beautifully said. As people who serve with our hands that comment stood out about the power of intent when we touch our clients and our patients.

She looks a lot like me! Down to the tan lines haha, makes me feel better about going. I find many channels use very slim and muscular women as models, and that's fine! But some diversity is nice too. I also imagine that massage is different depending on how much space there is between the muscle and skin.

Pretty glad I came across this! I have my first client technically in ten hours (currently 12:08 AM lol), and my first client since I got my license a few months ago wants DT. Pretty nervous, since I'm as green as the grass outside the window since getting my license, but thank you for reminding me that it's more than just more pressure. It's about deeply connecting client to their tissues, and I especially love the fact you mention, in your own way, being mindful of yourself, how you present your technique, and through each stroke, there's a sense of therapeutic love. I believe it's not only the client getting such a therapeutic experience, but the LMT as well. Got a new subscriber!!

Glad to hear it, Dan! And much of it was from massage school. The Florida School of Massage is all about being kind and listening, and that philosophy kind of cascaded down to everything else. A psych degree also had an unexpected influence on how I make contact. So... school and journey I guess :)

Hi Ian. Your vids are super helpful, I've taken foot massage to the next level thanks to you, it was never really covered when I was at uni studying massage 7 years back. I am interested to hear your thoughts on lymphatic drainage massage if you have time. Best wishes, Chrissie.
@MassageSloth
7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chrissie, glad to hear the videos have been helpful! There's some decent evidence for manual lymphatic drainage, mostly in easing some symptoms of cancer treatment. I'm not entirely convinced that it's superior to other modalities for this purpose, or that targeting the lymphatic system is the reason for its success. While I question the theories underlying many massage modalities, that doesn't change the fact that people get relief, and that each one is a new way of interacting with the body. Also, with any intervention, there will be some clients who respond to that modality when all else has failed, so I think it's a worthwhile addition to your bag of tricks. Best wishes to you!

Thanks for replying. It is an interesting one. It was part of my training though I have abandoned other modalities such as Thai massage I do occasionally get asked for lymphatic work, usually in post operative people and it's tough because I am simply not sure I believe it does anything, even though people seem to enjoy it. I don't feel entirely comfortable administering treatment that I don't have confidence in. Anyway thanks again, I'll continue to swat up on your tuts. 😁

Thanks for your brilliant videos! I would love some tips on massaging very thin clients. I use lighter pressure generally and avoid pressing on bone and my clients seem happy and keep coming back but I feel like I'm not giving them enough or somehow they're missing out on something, any tips much appreciated :)
@MassageSloth
7 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea! I've found that many of my petite clients still prefer as much or more pressure than my clients with more muscle/fat, so a big part of it is using their self-report as a guide and trusting that they'll let you know when something hurts. I also try not to worry about contacting bony prominences on these clients while I'm using broad tools (palm, forearm, soft fist). Because I'm mostly working at that 45 degree angle, even if I skim over the medial scapula or PSIS during a stroke down the back, I know I can lean into that pressure without it feeling like I'm targeting those landmarks specifically. Thanks for the excellent idea and question!

It is often hard to choose what i should do in one hour - feet or belly or scalp. Every time it is a decision. Thank you, Ian, for this video. I learned a couple of new moves. And for your next video my question is "how do you decide on the price for the massage?" I am fresh out of school, work for 3 places now. Would like to start doing massages at people's houses and sometimes in my place(i have 3 kids:8,5,3 y.o.). And I struggle with pricing big time. Thank you

Massage Sloth Ian, it is a real struggle for me. Some people say to drive masses I should charge cheap. Some say - I should charge market value. That is 60$ or 90$ for 60 and 90 min respectively where I live in Quebec. Spas take 80$ and 115$. My friend who studied with me charges 60$ for 90 min. I am at a loss. But any of these numbers are better than what I am paid at chiro or spa anyways. I just want to set my mind on something already. It is frustrating to be flaunting from one decision to the other. Thank you for reading my rant.
@MassageSloth

I definitely get it! My life became less complicated when I did two things: First, I changed my rates to what I thought I was worth (slightly above market value in my area). Second, I did everything possible to introduce prospective clients to me, my office, and my style of massage before they ever set foot in my treatment room. I never had to answer the question, "how can you justify charging more than your peers?" because the people who chose to book with me were already convinced!
@elenabrabant9057

Massage Sloth Ian, thank you so much for the answer. I am not confident in myself. I got all 100% or 98% at school exams and it never seems enough - i still study every day through books, and videos, and courses in school. But there is this impostor syndrome and fear. And "Can I really charge 60$ a session" kind of jittering in the knees. Fudge! I am actually fun and nerdy sports addict energy ball. Depicting myself as frightened and hesitant is factually right but unbecoming and out of my usual character. In your video could you, please speak why charging little is "wrong". It isn't wrong really, it is a choice with certain outcomes.
@MassageSloth
7 жыл бұрын
My main concern is with massage therapists undervaluing themselves and attracting clients who aren't right for them. Using discounts and trying to stay under the going rate can attract clients who are looking for great deals, but who aren't necessarily looking for your massage. In the fullness of time, the best possible outcome is to find clients who want your style specifically, and to let all the rest go their way. In other words, boldly be yourself, boldly charge your worth, and it will bring in the right clientele. "Fun and nerdy sports addict" will always be with you and will always be one of your assets. "Frightened and hesitant" is just fine, but it's temporary :)

Hi Ian, I would like to know some tips on how to deal with client that talk through the entire massage...
@MassageSloth
7 жыл бұрын
This would be a good topic for a full blog post, but in short: If this isn't something that seems to be distracting them from their massage, then I'll let them lead the way on conversation. I'll usually keep my answers somewhat brief and resist the temptation to tell my own stories, but if they're getting good results and feeling better after, then they can talk all they please. Some clients, on the other hand, seem to stress themselves out by talking about work all the time, or seem to talk out of a need to fill the silence. If I think they're hurting their own experience, I'll try some subtle things first, like occasionally asking them to take a few easy deep breaths, and making my responses even briefer. If I have a good rapport with the client, I'll just say something like, "Joe, it seems like our conversations might be distracting you from the massage. Does that feel true to you?" I'll get their opinion on it and, again, follow their lead.
