KAAY was "THE" underground sound that even the FM stations could not compete with.thank you KAAY, Little Rock,ARK.

Serious part of my youth. There were no real FM stations in the late 1960s. As soon as it was dark, KAAY and WLS would go full power. Both of these stations played music no other station would play. KAAY was probably my favorite. Jamie Brockett's Legend Of The USS Titanic, Cindy's Crying, lots of King Crimson, Led Zepplin and other long tracks that eventually became classics.

@@nhwnhw02And there was nothing else that could compete with Clyde Clifford and Beaker Street. All the other stations were straight top fourth, or less, with some only playing the top eight or ten. Clyde played up great music that we would otherwise of never heard. Thanks Clyde!

@@socorro01nm my dad, Jimmy Mersch, was the bartender at the Showboat during the time they played there. This is where my mom and dad met listening to their music 💞 3 months later they were engaged. Many a night, after bar close, mom and dad would sit around with the band and drink and talk. SO many amazing stories from my dad. I'm sitting at our lake home this beautiful Independence Day 2022 with my mom and dad and we're talking about stuff and Deepwater Reunion come up. I decided to look them up. The sheer JOY on my dad's face (he's got early onset dementia and Alzheimer's) when I played this song was SO amazing. He just kept saying how much he loved Barbara's voice and how funny and nice she was. I was SO excited when actual results appeared when I searched for Deepwater Reunion ❤️❤️❤️

What a powerful and iconic song. The artistry is superb. This tune has stayed with me for 40 years. I couldnt remember the band, or even the name of the song, but I remember this from many nites as a young teen listening to KAAY. Thank you for posting it. If the subject had been more mundane it would have been a smash hit. But back then you couldnt even reference the word "high" on top 40 radio.

For sure. Good old Beeker Street with Clyde Clifford. I grew up outside of Davenport, Iowa. You could tell who the druggie were in school by the tired eyes from listing to Beeker Street and Beeker Theater.

Absolutely agree. The changes to Paxton's original lyrics actually improve the poetry, and this song definitely needs to be sung by a woman.

I was too young (born in 1963) for the original Beaker Street, but I became a fan of its 1987-2011 revival. It's the only show I ever heard this song played on. I miss Beaker Street, but last I heard, Clyde is still doing reasonably well, and still has his day job outside of radio.

Listened to KAAY in the early '70's in Kimberly WI. This song and the 'Fair Thee Well Titanic' song, you know the one with the great stances, 'They wouldn't let Jack Johnson on board, they said this ship don't haul no coal, fair thee well, Titanic, fair thee well. It was midnight on the sea, the band was playing Ne'er to thy God than thee' were the mainstays.

Can someone tell me how Jefferson Airplane got a major hit with White Rabbit, yet this song never made it to the charts?
@kejay74
5 жыл бұрын
It is called 'promotion'. Small band, not largely known, not enough promotion. KAAY is the ONLY place I ever heard it played. Probably a dozen or so times, somewhere between 1969 ~ 1972, or so.
@markdillman7809

A very fair comparison. The Jefferson Airplane were on a major record label. Makes a big difference. Granted, a major label could have purchased or leased this album for release with nationwide distribution and promotion. In fact, Deepwater Reunion had a single release on RCA, the same label as Jefferson Airplane. But, I agree, if life was fair "Cindy's Cryin"' would have been a hit record. With the airplay it had on "Beaker Street" it could have broken out. kzitem.info/news/bejne/mGaCzapmo6yih34
