Snow is a great advantage when deer hunting, easy to see deer and follow a blood trail and tracks. If the shots are close, with iron sights, never hesitate to make a neck shot. No tracking, deer drops in it’s tracks and no wasted meat. This has been a good hunting season in Pennsylvania and New York. Many hunters this season.

@Cram Butcher Try finding a new gun chambered in it. There's lots of calibers that are obsolete or obscure that you can still buy ammo for. My father hunted for years with a sporterized Lee Enfield .303. You can still buy ammo. Every gunshot in Canada is going to stock it. My father in law used a Savage model 1899 chambered in .22 savage high power. There's at least 2 European companies still making ammo.

It was great to have Ron go through the history of the dreaded 8mm Mauser. It appeared the round you used to get your doe was a FMJ military. On another note I have grandsons who live in Ohio. If you plan to go to the Yuckeye state to hunt get ready to take out a loan to afford their out of state license fee: $257 just for the license and another $24 for the either sex deer tag. They're ridiculous. Ohio has made it clear if you are from PA you are not welcome there. But, I wanted to enjoy the deer season with my boys so I paid the toll. John, best wishes to you and Danielle. Thank you giving us good fun with your posts and Ron , job well done. Hopefully you will do more history lessons for us.

Well done! I have had my 1915 M-98 Mauser for 43 years. It is a sporterized, Interarms import manufactured in Danzig, When I first bought it, I had planned on mounting a scope, but after using it in the dense wood of the Catskill Mountains, the iron sights just worked so well, that I didn't bother. Most shots are under 100 yards, and the sights aquire the target instantly. I see no reason why a great great grandchild of mine shouldn't be using it in 2115 , to put meat in the freezer.

Someone along the line had put a K98K bolt into it with the bent handle. I'm not sure if this is a German capture gun or some yokel swapped it at some point in history for fun. Also fun fact when loading the magazine there's no need to manually pull the clip out of its little guide, you can very quickly shove the rounds down into the magazine and run the boat forward and the clip pops out magically lol. The deer were rutting and running all over the place. I missed 3 clean with the .270, then cased it and pulled out the the .30-30 with iron sights. The effect were immediate. Put 2 in the cooler. The 3rd came before Christmas. That was with the muzzleloader. Unusual that all 3 were antlerless bucks! I thought I had bagged young does on each shot. I try to leave the bucks alone. Does eat better. But these bucks are eating very nicely!

This year was also old iron year at the house, shot a 5 point buck with a Winchester 1894 in .32-40, went about 200 yards, bleeding like that doe you shot until he gave up the ghost.

John that was a great hunt. Your camera work is second to none. Congrats. This is not as easy as you make it seem. Hope folks realize that. Ron, the ammo for the rifle, was it regular off the shelf commercial ammo? That ammo is loaded very anemic here in the US. Ballistics on that stuff is down around 30-30 velocities with heavy bullets. But one doesn't have to adjust the rear sight at those distances. Would hope to see a pre-hunt review on your pre64 Win Mod 70. The "Rifleman's rifle".
