Here's a fun and similar story. I had a customer bring in a 2006 nissan sentra for poor running issues. Now, this thing was running so bad that we ended up having to tow it the rest of the way into the shop, this thing barely made it here. So we got the car in the bay and started scanning, and literally everything and anything that could code out, I think did. So we noticed that the car had 172k on the clock and we asked the customer had he ever brought his car in for service before and for how long does he believe it was running like this, when it ran. Customer states that he's been doing the services since the car had 150k on it and he stopped bring it in to save money. But while explaining his story he mentioned that he had seen a youtube or tiktok short some time ago explaining how if you mix like 4 to 8oz of blue def with a full tank of gas everytime you fill, it well then clean the engine internals better then seafoam. My response, was oh god. Back in the shop now I decided lets remove the spark plugs first cause they're more or likely faulty and the fact that their are cylinder misfire codes for every cylinder, figuring what better place to start, thats when I seen what could only be described as baby powder all over the spark plugs, I have no idea how they lasted as long as they did. Upon further investigation I found that this baby powder like substance had mixed in the oil, jelly like globs in fuel filter, injectors and rail. Its also managed to make layers of this stuff inside the whole exhaust system, literally 5/16th thick wall of this powder and it smiled like burning piss and oil for the very brief time that it ran outside when he arrived. Now something I didn't notice but later realized when I went out to have smoke, when the customer was in the spot, there was a large area in the parking space that looked like this powder. After we looked over the car, we explained to the customer that at this point its cheaper to get another used car then attempt to fix this one, this car was trashed internally with heavy scoring on the cylinder walls. Moral here is, if you don't know then ask someone who does like an actual mechanic cause the internet ain't always right!!!

The exact same thing actually happened to one of our customers, who poured DEF into the diesel tank. I removed the entire tank, pumped it out, cleaned the inside of the disgusting substance and left it to dry in the hot sun. I changed the fuel filter. I flushed the fuel lines with diesel several times before starting the engine. In the end I put everything back together and tried to start it. In the end it wouldn't run anymore despite venting the fuel system. The acid in the DEF caused the high pressure pump to seize up. So I had to replace the high pressure pump, the injectors and the high pressure lines. Cost: several thousand euros. I felt very sorry for the customer, but we couldn't find any other solution.

Putting oil into your diesel is fine, it burns just fine…and is totally unrelated to DEF, what DEF does, what DEF is for, or what your diesel engine can burn. And the 3rd guy realized what he did, and towed it to us. The first 2 got everything new from the fuel filler neck to the tips of the injectors. The 3rd got a tank and fuel sender. The filter was changed too, even though nothing got there. Insurance covered most of it.

Why would they replace it instead of just clean it? Honest question because I am an automotive service technician that knows very little about diesels. I've had several customers who have put diesel in their gas tank. I drop and clean the tank and fuel pump, pull and clean the fuel rail and injectors. While I have the fuel rail off, I put the tank back in with new gas. Run about a gallon of gas through the fuel line. Zip it all back up with some B12 complete fuel line system cleaner and send them on their way. So I guess my question is; did you really HAVE TO replace everything? Or is that just what the insurance paid for?

I know an older gentleman that put Def in his fuel tank at a truckstop where they have def at the pump and he said he was just on the phone and had his head up his ass and shove the nozzle in the fuel tank then proceeded to jump back on the freeway pulling a trailer and a mile or two down the road started rolling white smoke, and by the time we got to an offramp and pulled his truck completely shut off… long story short at a Ford dealer. The final bill was $19,500. 😮😢 And yes, I’m sure it could’ve been done cheaper somewhere else but he’s an old “ gotta be done at the dealer” kinda guy. 2019 f250 btw

Ok. Get ready to laugh, roll your eyes and maybe even calm me a DA. Recently, while in Europe we rented a passenger van to drive around. The tank was as 1/4 full, which will be important in just a moment and I pulled into a fuel station to fill up before our 2 hour drive. Yep, I did and now you’re really shaking and scratching your head right? Apparently, the vast majority of vans and other passenger vehicles in Europe are diesel and I put gas in the tank. Fortunately, I recognized there was an issue and pulled over to double check the fuel type and two bright green labels, one in the fuel cover and just inside at the cap read DIESEL. What ultimately happened? A serviceman named Chopper from the rental company came out and siphoned the fuel out and we replaced it with diesel and yes, all was good. Cost? $300 + diesel costs. That was much better than the $10k-$15k a new engine might have cost. It can happen to anyone. Oh, the worse part? I have to take the jokes from my wife, four kids and their spouses. It’s all in good fun but a great lesson. I stayed calm and actually found a hose on the wide of the road and was going to siphon the fuel out myself but decided against it for a couple of reasons. No place to dump the fuel and could not get the hose all the way into the tank. Lesson learned.

My buddies dad did this. Heading home to Reno and stopped in Magna (SLC suburb) to fuel up. Filled his tank with DEF and didn't realize it. Took off from the store and made it a couple hundred feet before it ran so bad it died. I had it towed to my shop, we drained the tank and filter and it fired up and drove home to Reno where he's been driving it since. Glad it's still running for them cause I know the fuel system in a 2024 Suburban wouldn't be cheap.
