Essentially Perfect Putty is just drywall filler you can get in a small tube at any hardware store. For a fraction of the price.

This is the third comment I've added to this video and I think I know what they use and how to buy it very inexpensively. I had previously checked density based on weight, volume, and a sphere packing factor of 74%. Liquid Gravity ($13.95 to $15.95 for 240g) was 5.86 g/cm3 density. 1mm stainless balls from eBay ($30.55, free shipping for 1,000g) was 6.58 g/cm3 density. Suspecting Liquid Gravity might merely be steel shot for abrasive blasting, I bought from eBay "10 LBS - Cast Steel Shot Abrasive Blasting Media, Fine Grade, S170 Size" for $21.95, free shipping. (Other ways of buying this steel shot can require at least a 50 lb purchase.) 10 lbs is 4,536 g or about 19 times as much as comes in one liquid gravity container. The tiny balls looked very much like Liquid Gravity, and the density calculated to 5.81 g/cm3. Given reasonable variances in measurement, I consider that the same as Liquid Gravity. It was similarly magnetic as Liquid Gravity (as were the stainless steel balls by the way). So it is vastly cheaper to buy the steel shot. The 1 mm stainless steel balls will give you a little more density in the same space if that is critical. To go to a much higher density, there is always tungsten powder but at high cost.

Wet your thumb and pull all the filler out and in the process all the lead weights fall out the nose.

Note: do NOT use white woodworking glue to secure liquid lead and similar products in place. Over the years, there will be a chemical reaction between the two and the mix will expand, causing the model to burst.

The putty looks and acts like decorators caulk! Big tube for about £1.50ish. I have used that a lot not for models but for gap filling in wood and walls, I may try some on my next model. TFS, G :)

Note that Liquid Gravity is NOT lead as estimated in the video. Deluxe makes it clear it is non toxic. Some online review said they calculated the density at 4.15 gr/cm3 (I don't know how they did their calculation). I did my own calculation (using 74% of volume of material in bottle to represent a correction for being "packed spheres") and got 3.53 gr/cm3. Lead is much denser at 11.3 gr/cm3. Liquid gravity is also less than any iron or steel and the online review also said it is non-magnetic. It will be interesting when somebody figures out what it is since Deluxe Materials apparently isn't telling. They may have created an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) that would have more info but I couldn't find one. Another alternative for such weighting is tungsten powder, tungsten cubes, or other tungsten shapes. Tungsten has a density of 19.3 gr/cm3 which is nearly twice that of lead. But it is expensive. For model railroad work, I have been using various sizes of tungsten cubes from a company called "Tungsten Heavy Powder and Parts" and they have a vast array of products. One pound of tungsten (454 grams), in whatever form, costs about $100 to $115 there. So it is three or four times the cost, per gram, of Liquid Gravity. They also have powders but remember that powder has an effective density like packed spheres and fill about 74% of the volume available, the rest being air. Cubes can be packed more densely if the cavity shape permits it. (Or you can use a combination of cubes and powder, or spheres and powder.) I use tungsten because of extreme limitation of available space in many cases. I work in a U. S. hobby shop and we have started carrying the Deluxe Liquid Gravity and it seems a very easy to use and I consider it actually affordable and very convenient if your application has the space for it. I may start using it instead of tungsten where space for it is sufficient.

I'm not telling anyone not to use Perfect Putty, but the same thing can be done with thinned-down Tamiya/Bondo putty.

Instead of using Liquid Gravity ( Lead Shot = Liquid ? ) Why not just use the Blue Tack or Plastercine is equally weighty. That's what I used years ago for such Issues like tail sitters. A long time before this new Liquid Gravity was about.

You should use super or cyanole glues with a lot of caution because they can react in srange ways with the metal of the weights. i tried it and got bad surprises.

And, if the tube of Perfect Plastic Putty starts to dry out, then a few drops of water in the top, give the tube a good squish with the lid on, and it's as good as new!

I think the granules are made of iron because of the toxity of lead. You can use a magnet to find it out ;-).Besides I bought similar granules much cheaper on ebay germany.7,50€ for 500g incl. shipping!

Questions what's the difference between white tubular container vs black? Is this putty flexible Like really plastic or brittle. Last question does it physically at any store like Home Depot or Lowe's?

I'm working on a 1/12 scale tank and there is a large section on the front that needs modelling. It's a Pz IV Ausf D but I need to turn it into an Ausf G and the front armour is different. Would enough of the Perfect Putty work (in a contained box section on the front) or is there any other plastic modelling material I can use to fill in this section?

Correction - and more: Previously I added a comment saying I calculated density of the material as 3.53 g/cm3. I made an error where I multiplied by the sphere packing ratio and should have divided. Since then, I have also taken a more accurate volume measurement and weighed the sample rather than assume it was 240 grams. I put the entire bottle into a rectangular container that was 1 1/2" x 1 5/16" and it filled it to a depth of 1 3/4". Doing the math and unit conversion yields a volume of 56.46 cm3. The actual weight of the material only was 245 g. Using a 74% sphere packing ratio, the density of the material itself calculates to 245 g/ 56.46 cm3 / 0.74 = 5.86 g/cm3. I also found that the material is magnetic. From eBay, I got a 1 kg jar of 1mm stainless steel balls for $30.55 with free shipping. They calculated somewhat denser at 6.58 g/cm3. The stainless steel balls were also magnetic. Some stainless steel is magnetic, some is not, and annealing and forming can change the magnetism. In the U.S., Liquid gravity seems to sell from $13.95 to $15.99 for 240 grams. Using the $13.95 Liquid Gravity price, cost per kilogram is $58.13. Using the $15.99 Liquid Gravity price, cost per kilogram is $66.63. The 1 mm stainless steel balls cost per kilogram is lower at $30.55 and, being denser, you can get more weight in the same area.

I'm not sure why people insist on using lead shot for weight when its much easier to use lead sheet cut to the correct size, if its too thick you can easily hammer it thinner. It's available at most hardware stores as roofing sheet. Guess I like the easy was and not having to deal with lead pellets rolling all over the place and then having to somehow bond them together.

@@vasili1207 No. Personally I find those "lead" wheel weights (actually zinc) to be a bit on the hard side for easy use. Still I will give you a consolation prize as they are better than using lead shot.
