First trip to the Wisconsin side of the Superior channel this season, and caught a departure! Always a surprisingly tricky thing to accomplish. CSL Niagara departing with iron ore pellets from Superior. Despite the lack of large waves in the channel due to the breakwaters, all except for one large one that absolutely soaked me! Don’t think I’ve ever gotten hit by a wave to that degree before! Was able to pull in the camera so it didn’t get wet, most of the wave hit my other side and behind me. None of the other waves were even close to that size and I was up on a platform! The wind was absolutely insane, at times I had to hold onto poles or the wall in gusts to keep from getting pushed around! The wind was also strong enough that the Niagara needed tug assistance in addition to her bow thrusters to keep from blowing back into the docks while turning around. Not sure what the actual wind speed was because the wind meter on Park Point was apparently malfunctioning, it was definitely NOT 12mph lol. Most likely wind speeds were around 40mph, possibly higher within the channel due to the wind being funneled through the open area.
