In part one Shinzen talks about concentration power as one of the three core skills of mindful awareness, along with sensory clarity and equanimity (see these other components in the Mindfulness Triple Skill-set playlist for the complementary skill-set). He talks about his first discoveries in concentration - while counting the breath in a Zen temple, and later extending concentration out into daily activities - which sold him on the meditative path. He started with "boring" tasks for about a year in a Shingon temple before they initiated him into the secret practices - a 100 day intensive which he humourosly goes on to describe.
