It is a lake of glacial origin, with an approximate surface of 2300 hectares. It occupies a valley surrounded by beautiful landscapes of coihue, lenga and Araucaria forests, which make up part of the Patagonian Andean forest. It is the northernmost of the Argentinean lakes surrounded by forests, in which the coihue and the lenga predominate over the Pehuén or Araucaria. It is included within the Lanín National Park, which protects its natural vegetation and fauna. Because it is far from large populations, the natural vegetation of its coasts remains in a good state of conservation, as well as the population of salmonids in its waters.
Its elongated shape and sandwiched between high mountains, with a pronounced curve towards the center of it, makes it very attractive to navigate by rowing or motorized, and it is an interesting destination for salmonid fishing. At the bottom of the lake you can see the silhouette of the Lanín volcano, giving its head a beautiful perspective.
The Quillén River is born at the mouth of Lake Quillén, and runs in an easterly direction for approximately 35 kilometers before pouring its waters into the Aluminé River on its right bank. At the beginning of its course, it receives the contribution of the Malalco River on its right bank .
