I am blessed to be born in 1962. Grew up around all Reggae Motown drunk & stOned parents in the UK. What a free & funky childhood with no rules except come home when the street lights come on. This is one of my favourite early memories of dancing at a block party with all my neighbours to this beautiful song :)

Wasn't the dancing girl in the red and white skirt just brilliant she definitely had the rhythm and exactly the right movement for this lovely song. Obviously, she appeared to now at least some of the lyrics to Israelites I for myself first heard the song back when it hit in 1969. This was just a year later. I was a mere 6 years old in 1970. My father came from the carribean, not Jamaica, but the music was universal in the West Indies region. I've only just learned to dance with rhythm similar to the young girl as when I watched others in my family who had rhythm to dance to Desmond or any other artist. I just couldn't do it. I was too shy away, but nevertheless, I gave it a try, but it was without success, so I considered myself quite pathetic. I'm my own worst critic, but I suppose it shouldn't have mattered in any case it will always be a brilliant memory, one of many for my childhood days.❤

Wow, what a show I've seen many young people who definitely have the rhythm to the music, but I certainly remember when Desmond did this song I believe he wrote in 1969. He was simply amazing in, like with some of Jamaica reggae artists of the day women loved dancing to it, a fair few youngsters here in the UK. Some of my family are carribean, so it taken me many years to get to dance with the rhythm in the manner that other family members did at that time. Although they came from a different lsland its universally recognised, and British bands are trying to keep reggae up there. RIP bro your not forgotten, and the music continues even though the sadness your no longer here to enjoy Desmond . Thank you for your music.

You know people today don't realise how powerful a crossover music Ska was. EVERYBODY loved it. You'd go to a ska club and there'd be blacks, whites, mods, rockers you name it. Yes there was violence outside but rarely inside and it wasn't racial, usually over some girl who'd been playing men. It was a truly unifying British culture.

Hey decordobauk, Desmond Dekker was great but here's a thing.... Back in 1981 or 82 I used to drive the Newcross Playbus. It was a yellow RT with red mudguards and a huge snake or dragon painted down the side. When it went a bit wrong I'd try to fix it but often had to ask for help and one of the nicest guys I ever met who was so friendly and helpful worked at New Cross bus garage. I've forgotten his name but he told me he used to play bass with Desmond Dekker......could it be?
@decordobauk

@@malcolmhazleton5264 no afraid not, BUT, I would imagine he played with him at later date. The original backing band (The Aces), all went on to do other Jobs/careers, in the UK and one in Canada. I grew up nearish that area for a little while, so Kudos to you for driving that much needed Playbus, in that area, at that time.
