What many Van Halen fans don't realize is that David Lee Roth was not only the lead singer, he was their press agent and , at times, their manager - def. in the beginning. Roth did most of the hustling for gigs in the 70's. He suggested the band's name, in the beginning. He basically wrote many of the band's videos, in the later half of the classic lineup (i.e. - the 1984 album videos: all Roth's ideas and coordination etc.). He's def. NOT some stoned out singer "dude" ......

It became obvious when the music fell flat after he left. It didn't have the spirit. It sounded like a rock band trying to create popular music. It wasn't from the heart anymore. It didn't make you feel confident, sexy, or inspired anymore. Technically speaking, it was still great stuff but it lacked the attitude that propelled an entire generation to a prison break.

@@Whaddayamean13 They had SOME good songs during the Hagar era - but I do get what you’re saying. Bear in mind they were still pretty young during the Roth era - Intend to think true , real RnR bands peak at that point. Ex.-Guns & Roses. The game is geared towards the young. The Hagar era was the “grown up” VH. Still some great tunes: Cabo Wabo, Amsterdam, Seventh Seal, Black and Blue, Deja Vu, Pleasure Dome, to name a few. When Eddie became a dad etc. the vibe changed - it rocked , but not in the footloose / fancy free way the original band did - and that mostly was from Roth

David made Van Halen what they are. It was his idea for Van Halen from a school dance band, to a band on tour. Eddie Van Halen didn't think they were good enough. David's dad had a big basement the band practiced in. So he and his dad did a lot to make Van Halen what they became.

I don’t think he knew they’d split. I think he knew he was going to do a solo record though and sadly EVH and AVH got angry about it. DLR has said either in his book or in interviews and/or both that he’d planned to go back but then they hired SH and made an album quickly. Then negative stuff was said and the media made it ugly for a long time so forgiving and forgetting took that much longer. Always seemed messed up to me and still does how SH has talked so much crap about DLR. I didn’t think much about it back when they broke up but to see so much crap on social media from SH still today is crazy. Never heard of such a grudge last that long from someone who wasn’t a part of the band with DLR. Makes me even more of a fan of DLR to see him not care and just continue to be so happy and entertaining for us fans. I find him incredibly inspiring and one of the most interesting people on the planet. The 1996 incident was hard to watch though especially the EVH and AVH interview, but alcohol was obviously still playing a part in a lot of EVH’s anger. Luckily for all of us fans, it didn’t effect the quality of his skills whatsoever. And back then, there was little awareness about how deeply alcohol can effect some. Alcohol and alcoholism is only now being much more understood in the depth of how unhealthy and unsafe it can be yet it’s highly addictive so it will always be a problem for many just like tobacco. Add in the typical lifestyle of a rock god and it’s no surprise so many have succumbed to it. I’m just grateful to have grown up listening to and watching this amazing band in their prime back then and happy for them that they eventually reunited. I think deep down, under the emotions, they all always had a lot of respect for each other in their talents and amazing times and music and all they made together. That music and great times possibly influenced a little of the painful and angry moments from missing it all.?. I’m even more a fan of all 4 of them now then I was back then. Love that Wolfgang got to be a big part of his dad’s band too (though wish MA had reunited with them too) and is now so talented as well. And most lead singers did/do their own stuff. Some go back to the band, some don’t. Even EVH did a few things away from Van Halen. But bands break up all the time. Most relationships are hard work that can easily get toxic so I think the split was probably a lot healthier than it would’ve been had they stayed together. Add in other relationships like spouses, children, managers, etc and it’s surprising any stay together for long and so many that split end up trying again. It’s moments like this interview, listening to their music and watching their videos that always brings back the nostalgia of that great part of our own lives at that time and the memories of what a truly awesome band they were that was so far ahead of the times in so many ways. ❤ to Van Halen and to DLR and his bands. Thanks for the music and memories. ☮️
