Diane Rehm held a special conversation with Geraldine Brooks. They discussed the inspiration behind her novel “Horse,” as well as a literary career that has jumped from the American Civil War to Biblical times in the Kingdom of Israel, to the plague years in England.
In “Horse,” Brooks uses the true story of a champion 19th-century racehorse to connect characters across time and place: Kentucky in 1850, New York City in 1954 and Washington, DC in 2019. This includes the enslaved man who acts as the horse’s groom, a scientist who discovers a thoroughbred’s skeleton in an attic, and an art historian who rescues an oil painting at a garage sale.
