I can't agree more. Yes, Diaspora is quite a place away from home, with high expectations. My observations: 1. When death occurs, we are caught up without plan, friends or family sell out household items, fundraise, and shipped as luggage - "return to sender"- quite heartbreaking! Families in Kenya had been forgotten. The deceased was so obsessed into life with friends in Diaspora that no or nothing, at his ancestral or anywhere to hold unto. Let's stop pretending life is immortal, and Diaspora is 'the highway to glory.' 2. People in Diaspora are mostly very mean. This applies to late arrivals. People are coming in their 50s onwards. Any experience encountered in Kenya becomes ones lable for humiliation and ridicule. Gossip in Diaspora is really a cancer. I would rather be an introvert. 3. Kenyans in Diaspora, truly with great opportunities and privilege. We need to tap into how some families in white people communities live, nurture kids to excel academically, build savings strategies, and uplift other needy people in your backyard. The ladder of success will always get too high to go, feeling exhausted, we turn around, if missed steps due to weariness, you drop to the ground with a bang. I have seen folks who arrived in the 70s, estranged to Kenya totally, lacking the 6th sense to make good decisions, age has caught up fast, gout, diabetes, high blood pressure, name it. In Kenya, the parents have passed on, the home in the village; now desserted, and "the hope for the future" is in total blindness. 4. Most of us in Diaspora are not using 'copy' approach to development in communities of origin. I congratulate you for a great home and house in your community. Most of us can not visit their villages for lack of good roads, running water in homes, lighting, and name it all. I just wish to tell you, all that is not there, you can work hard, earn money, contract good people and be the change agent. I am not a Nairobi resident no more, I go straight to the farm, serene place, cool air, and freshness of nature is the joy of my heart. A moderate house, yes, running water from bore hoke, yes. Several indoor toilets and outdoor toilets for us and guests. Lighting by solar and electricity that is unreliable. Irrigation farming, yes. Name it, and we can all create jobs in rural villages to reduce influx to big cities. Good job, I commend you for showing yourself to us.

Not sure what kind of environment or what kind of diaspora folks you are around… but some of us have a totally different experience. The diaspora people that I know are too busy to be engaged in cheap gossip. You are who you surround yourself with.

Great presentation! Let’s not forget that the abuse can also come from the guests from Africa or elsewhere from the continent. There was a child who was abused by a brother in law. The so called brother in law beat the hosts 3 year old and scratched him to bleeding. The host ended up letting go of the sister and the husband. There’s always 2 sides of a coin.

Hi Wuon, please don't put plastic in a micro wave to warm your food unless it's marked microwave safe. The plastics release chemicals that leach into the food and over time can be dangerous particularly for children and pregnant women. Oh yum, that githeri is making me hungry, na tena uji? Delicous!!

This is a very very important discussion. Abuse, rape and mistreatment of immigrants by persons known to them. It is a power dynamic exploited by human nature. Humans are creatures that will exploit a situation…it is Gerald a matter of retrain.

Highly recommend people to be aware of the laws and their legal rights. If you have this on your fingertips, no one will manipulate you. Don’t share away from contacting attorneys for advice if you think something ain’t right. Most offer free consultation.

Parents should be careful sending their teenage daughters who are straight out of high school to diaspora as they’re the most targeted by predatory older hosts. At least give her that knowledge coz it’s very easy to be taken advantage of your naivety and you just go along with it because you feel you owe the individual something for showing you the rounds, perhaps teaching you how to drive etc and in essence controlling you.
