Let me introduce you to the delightful Dick Charlton. He is the only surviving veteran from my home town of Henley-on-Thames. He was in the territorial army before the war. He will be 100 years old next month! He was 4th Bn Ox and Bucks but he was captured as part of the BEF just before Dunkirk at the Battle for Cassel 29th May 1940. He was taken to Stalag VIII B ( Lamsdorf ) and was held prisoner until the end of war. He also survived the harsh winter months of 'The Long March' as thousands of prisoner were forced marched hundreds away from the advancing Red Army from January1945 to April 1945 in truly gruelling conditions where many died. He was eventually released by the Yanks, indeed by General Patton himself.
