The internet isn't dead yet, but it is at the risk of dying. Large-scale data scraping is nowadays guaranteed to gather a lot of AI-generated content even when trying to filter it out. So for companies trying to train new AIs it's already on the brink of death. For normal humans it's not dead though, as there still is a lot of non-AI content out there (including everything from before when AIs became a thing that is still online) and it's pretty easy to not get overwashed with AI-generated content (yet). But the more AI-generated content is put into the internet, the more it dilutes the real-human-made content.
@davilinkicefire

I agree with you that, the internet is not dead (yet), but the health of internet is at risk and with the AI it's going to accelerate the decay of internet, or should i say the web that we know now. Savy tech people are already beginning to doubt what they see on the web, but the everyday people will, at some point, stop to trust the web but will probably require at huge scandal/hoax/... for them to understand, and at that point the web will be pointless, because why use something that you cannot trust (would you use a car that you cannot trust his brake ?). Before the AI it was possible to make false claim, but with the AI, finding what true what false will be a lot harder. Before a simple google search was sufficient to know if something is true or not, but if you need to take DAYS to validate something, in the mean time that false information can have real consequence, many people doesn't understand that because 1000 people say something, that doesn't mean it's true.
@Thorned_Rose

Except that huge swaths of what was useful information and content from the early days of the internet is disappearing (if it hasn't already). In the early days, a huge chunk of the content on the web was just people posting information they thought others might find useful. e.g. a repair blog that had parts diagrams and how tos. Nowadays much of that sort of information has either gone or has been centralised into websites like Reddit where you're at the mercy of wealthy CEOs and boards who could delete whatever they want whenever they want. Even just the difference between now and 5 years ago has been massive in terms of information loss. Not to mention now having to filter through huge swaths of LLM/AI generated sites posing as blogs or information websites but that contain absolutely useless drivel and actually only exist to display ads.

Right now, there are a million "tells" for AI content, especially visual content (still images and videos) and written text. Compare that to what AI was capable of five years ago, and then project it forward in time five or ten more years. It's going to become harder and harder to tell what's real and what's fake as time goes by. It's already almost impossible to tell whether a well-known voice is real or computer generated. People are already so easily swayed simply by ads that pop up in their Facebook feeds. We're all in trouble when AI-generated video becomes realistic enough to fool the average person, and capable of depicting fictitious events that drive people in the direction intended by their (indirect) creators.

Ah. This video helped me realize that the Dead Internet Theory wasn't what I thought it was... The first time I heard about the idea of an internet populated by bots was in the 2010s, when someone shared some stats that showed that more than half the traffic on the the internet was from bots. But it really wasn't a conspiracy theory at all, and it didn't mention AI at all either. It was just a simple observation: bots were the majority of the internet traffic. The bots mentioned then were mostly search engine bots, bots aggregating various information, some spam bots (again, without AI), hacking bots, etc. For instance you can see this was already a thing in the 2015 Statista article "Humans Account for Less Than Half of Global Web Traffic" (10 seconds quick search, there probably are better articles than this one). So when I first heard of the the term "dead internet theory" I thought it was just about that: the observation that the number of bots were growing, and human interaction on the internet accounted for a rather low proportion of it all. I didn't know there was a conspiracy theory built on it. In the past few years I might have talked a few times about the "dead internet" without realizing it had a more twisted meaning than I thought...
@hindigente

I hadn't heard of Nick's take on the "dead Internet theory" either, so maybe the problem lies with his sources' narrow interpretations on the "theory" (it is neither a theory, nor a conspiracy, so I don't know what to call it... maybe a "spooky speculation").

Lots of the fairly large image-centered subreddits are thoroughly infested by repost bots, especially on subreddits that have dropped in popularity and are therefore not moderated properly. Most of them just copy the image and title directly, while others will try to hide by adding intentional typos in the title, or crop/skew/colorshift the image slightly to make it harder to detect. I also spotted three bots on the "AskReddit" subreddit that copy-pasting comments directly from the last time a similar question was asked. And I only noticed because I remembered reading one of the original comments. A lot of the image repost bots will have a handful of comments on AskReddit, specifically because it is very active and posts are often repeated, so it is easy for them to go unnoticed.

The sad part is, proper technical discussion has just about disappeared from the internet. Google searches have been polluted down to a fraction of its former helpfulness. Prior technical forums have been flooded with garbage. It's so hard to find useful information when there's more AI generated sites full of summaries of topics that purely exist to catch ad revenue and traffic. The summaries only scratch the surface of topics, and it makes the depth of knowledge so much shallower.

to be fair the dead internet theory dude based his observations on 4chan (which IS monitored by law enforcement groups from the usa and others governments since bad people do tend to announce their intentions there) and there are public AI models trained specifically on post from there to the point that it's really hard to discern it from real posters (the low quality of the human posters, also called "shitposters" doesn't help either). The theory part would be that those law enforcement agencies do waste time and resources "poisonning the well" of such places, making fake interactions with bots to steer conversations and such, but that's up to the reader to decide. One could argue that to some extent other social networks also suffer from fake users, mostly based on the fact that click farms do exists and that studies repeatedly show that most human users just consume and don't generate content (the infamous small vocal minorities from x and other places), to the point one could say that there's really not a lot of real human interaction there. add to the mix that every company under the sun MUST have social network presence and you can see why this kind of theory would be so popular. Interesting video though, and now that you opened the door to conspiracy theories could you do one on how much data windows and google actually take from you? not just the publicly know, but also setting up something like wireshark and checking it up.

They were breaking the law. I think that the fine for those using vpn to access it is an (serious) overreaction, but the ban was kinda mandatory. Once they broke the law we couldn't let Musk do whatever he pleased with our country.

No, but we can make fun of it. While I don't necessarily agree with it, I have a hard time feeling bad for the loss of Twitter.

As filtered as the internet is for even the most mundane of discussion, it’s true just in that regard. I post nothing that goes against the rules. But certain words regardless of context get my comments automatically removed. Part of life is having to see some things with which you disagree and it’s up to you if you wish to engage with those ideas or not. Be it to argue or discuss or not. And if my comments that can somewhat be contrary to stuff aren’t allowed to go through; off of some nonsense filters, then, I may as well not even bother.

I've seen onscreen captions that are obviously AI generated. They are supposed to be contributor's comments but the pattern of speech is always the same and the text description does not match the video content exactly.

Of course it is anecdotal, but I had never come across this silly take on "who's behind the curtains" of the conspiracy (also it is usually about the inevitable future instead of the present). The rest of the "conspiracy" is not really that outlandish. It is perfectly plausible that: 1. As bots and image/language GPTs become increasingly sophisticated, they can get undistinguishable from humans for most practical purposes; 2. Big corporations (including the "opinion swayers" types) are likely to flood social media with bots as cheaper/more effective alternatives to advertisement and means to control public opinion. 3. As bots get even cheaper and the ratio of fake to real accounts grows, people's social media contacts (aside from real life acquaintances) are likely to be mostly comprised by bots. The Internet becomes a dead mall. While at it, I strongly suggest "We're in Hell"'s latest video essay: kzitem.info/news/bejne/lp2EsoqfkJh0dGU

yeah with how much bots, and ai generated things flooding the internet. I wouldn't call the internet dead, but I would think a more apt description would be "The Dark Internet" or "Dark Forest Internet." Where the sheer amount of chat bots and AI generated content simply makes its hard to find anything that made a person or is a person. While small groups or communities either on a forum/discord server/etc will likely be where you'd find people. Whether this will be something that'll stick to foreseeable future of the internet is unlikely due to at least the whole "AI" tech is now having its limitations and problems getting wider attention and being financially unsustainable due to its own issues its created for itself (AI ending up training on AI generated data as the data scrapes starts to contain more AI generated data)
