The brighter color of the Klein and Milwaukee vs the FLEX makes it easier to see what's in the box in less than ideal lighting conditions. Same is true of tool bags, hunting bags, backpacks, luggage, etc. Anything like that with brighter-colored interiors helps a lot for seeing what's in there.

I feel it's best to have the items in the container high-viz if you want to find them easy. I feel a darker or more neutral color is better for the container. A pack might be slightly different, lighter colors may let more sunlight in the pack. Though if not I would go back to dark. I keep lots of things in my hiking stuff high-viz. Normally the smaller harder to find things. Love my petzl headlight case, it's white and orange, and converts the light into a lantern!

I can say from first hand experience that the packout boxes are quite tough. I wrecked my truck rolling it over and my two stacks of packout were slung through the trees. I didn’t loose the first tool. There was some damage but nothing came open.

You really should have looked at the Ridgid boxes. When I finally decided to buy some a few months ago, I looked at them all for weeks. The Ridgid boxes are heavy and seal tight and the price was unbeatable, even compared to Ryobi, DeWalt and Kobalt. The add-ons for these boxes are nice but they are just gimmicky to me. The Ridgid boxes are on sale again and I'm on my way to pick up a few more this morning.

I'm a maintenance mechanic in NYC and I travel to 12 different properties in the city and I bought the packout thinking I'm gonna roll it all over the city streets. I realized it's too cumbersome and clunky to travel all day with. I ended up buying a tool bag and a really light weight but tough hand truck and bungee corded the bag to the hand truck. I really think the real test is the real world of walk up and down city streets all day. It's lot about wheel size, but design and durability.

Are you really trying to hunt used boxes? The soft rolling husky bags used to cost 50 bucks and die every 5 years. The milwaukee boxes are a bargain in the long run. My biggest problem with all those portable tool boxes is the handle length. I'm 6'4" and they all seem to be made for someone who is about 5'8". This means that when I'm pulling them I have to walk hunched over or the angle goes almost straight up and you look like an apprentice on the first day pulling your box. I wish that they would have something to lengthen the handles to make it more comfortable.

Another 6’4” guy here, man it’s very annoying. I have the new Dewalt boxes, I literally tied a handle of paracord to the toolbox handle so that when I have boxes stacked to the top they’re not digging into my awkwardly bent wrist.

I'm 6'2" and things seem okay for me so far. Though I just got my stack higher than the bar and I wouldn't go too much higher without a strap or something as it all gets a bit wobbly. I do have a 6'4" wingspan, so it places my hand near a 6' 1" person on the hang. Have you guys considered ditching the rolling box and getting the packout dolly? Or mounting a plate to one? For anyone still reading, go check out fastcap magshims. They have changed my life and upped my game, you can even mix in playing cards to fine tune things or get the perfect offset and they hold the stack together! Seriously game changing and seriously cheap. They even got my father to tell me I do really good work and he's a perfectionist on a perpetual pursuit. It literally brought a tear to my eye. But seriously, you will have trouble fitting a single playing card in my scribe cuts, thanks to Fastcap's magshims.

Hey guys I might have found another solution. Milwuakee makes a full size dolly. It has packout attachment points and a 400lb capacity! It looks like the bar sits around 4.5-5 feet. There should be good space, it can hold levels between the boxes and the bar. I did want 4 wheels, now I want that.

I joined milwaukee before Klein showed up @ home depot with their boxes. I do really like how robust the milwaukee boxes are. They might be a bit more than the old soft husky rolling bags I used to buy. But those bags disintegrate in 5 years flat. I loathe external storage. It's just a way to advertise your tools to thieves when you clock out... the only external thing that caught my eye is a cord wrap. Though I don't like any I see. I just want a cord hanger, literally like a dowel to hang the cord from. I don't want to have to wrap up a cord around a box after having to wrap up the same cord that was strewn across the jobsite, that's redundant. Nor do I want to have to unwrap the whole cord from the box just to have to unwrap the cord again from my hands across the job the next morning...

I've been trying to see decide on which system to go with, honestly at this point it's going to be toughbilt. They have the wall mounting system, bags that connect to the metal accessory rails along with other items and all of that attaches to their wall mount system including box to box to wall. Having a micro shop and working out on job sites I need both sides covered and it looks like toughbilt is going to fill that role a little cheaper than the others though not much cheaper. I used to in management at Lowes about twenty years ago, I'm not there because these changes in how they operate started back then and it's only gotten worse since. That is my one concern with buying toughbilt, dealing with Lowes and that's a 90 mile round trip for me if there's problems. The home depot isn't any better here and it's the same distance so it's a crap shoot either way.

It is no secret that I love Flex Tools. Before they released the Stack Pack system, I had a whole bunch of Packout boxes and I loved them. However, once Stack Pack came out, I bought them and sold all of my Packouts for the simple reason that I had all Flex tools and they work together much better. There are some areas where I still think Packout is better like the latching them together. An advantage Flex has is that they can connect backwards the same as forwards, which can be beneficial in some situations. As far as the new releases, Flex has come out with some wall storage, though probably not better than Packout. Loved the video, as always a very thorough review!

Thanks for the great comparison. While I certainly understand mentioning Milwaukee not providing all these added rail accessories OEM, I don't see why it really matters. Whether you're money for those accessories is going to Milwaukee or any of the 3rd party supporters of the brand seems inconsequential. Unless all the rail accessories are coming with the purchase of the Flex or Klein boxes it doesn't really matter in the long run.(opinion!). Some might actually make a case for it being better that 3rd party has taken the Milwaukee system so far and will likely continue doing so. Once you're in the rolling box eco system it can be tough to switch though , so videos like this are incredibly useful. I started my rolling box journey with the Rigid Pro Gear system , mostly due it's low cost of entry , and have recently switched to Milwaukee due to the cabinet and drawer box options that were unavailable via Rigid(they did recently add 2 and 3 drawer options though). I'm not sure if Klein and Flex offer drawers or cabinet boxes. But those are excellent for shop and jobsite use. I often find I'm not having to pull off boxes to get to many of my tools thanks to the cabinet and drawers stacked over the rolling box. Now Rigid has added drawers that can actually be set @ the bottom since their 2.0 system allows for the wheel and handle to connect to any of the drawers or full size boxes. It's certainly worth looking @ the Rigid kit once again with that addition, plus the price is much better than the 3 systems covered in this video. It's still Milwaukee for the win in my eyes. Again , thank you for the very informative and helpful video. Keep up the good work!

@tomj528

It's easy to see the draw for tradesmen but anytime you "buy into a system" it's going to be way overpriced and you're now stuck within the confines and limitations of that system. Think of all of the stacking and unstacking you have with these. First you wheel it out of your garage, unstack it to put in your vehicle then once you get where you're going you've got to unload and restack. Wheel it to where you're working and then it's unstacking time again...multiple times if you've got to move around the job site. Then restack to get out to your vehicle, unstack to load, then once home unload and restack before wheeling back into your garage. When I built my house 30 years ago, long before such things existed unless you built them yourself out of plywood I went with a 4'x2'x2' black plastic truck toolbox to hold all of my tools. It was light enough fully loaded that my wife and I could load and unload it from my truck. We lived in an apartment and I couldn't leave it in my truck overnight as it would be gone the next morning and our lot was 30 miles away. I rented a small storage locker near our lot rather than having to lug it out of our apartment to my truck every time which ended up being very convenient. We'd drive out, load the tool box and a few other goodies into the truck, back up to the house and lift it back out for easy access. I've been slowly reorganizing all of my tools over the past year or so and after considering everything from smaller steel or plastic job boxes to these stacking tool boxes I finally decided to use the cases most of my power tools came with and the tool boxes I already own including the six 20" red Plano tool boxes I scored several years ago for $1.99 each after mail in rebate when they were being closed out. These boxes are fantastic as they're easy to organize, hold a surprising amount of tools and the handle kicks forward to act as a leg when you open the lid so the top tray can sit on the open lid so everything is super accessible. I find that for most things I do, a single one of these boxes is all I need to grab as it's got a cordless drill, 2 batteries, charger, drills and screwdriver bit sets, hack saw, hand wood saw, pliers set, tape measure, utility knife, square, etc with a little room left to add whatever else I need. It's almost unbelievable what I can do with just this box alone and it slides right under my rear truck seat. I love the flexibility to just grab it and if needed another box or a few power tool cases at most as well. I don't even need to take my truck as it all easily fits into our smaller more fuel efficient Subaru. As a non-professional my needs are far different as I'm not using my tools all the time so I need them protected both in my garage and when transporting them while being well organized and easy to transport and deploy both at home and elsewhere. My way perfectly fits my needs and I didn't need to spend any additional money at all, saving me $1,000-$1,500 and more importantly being far more flexible. I think a lot of homeowners/DIYers/hobbyist woodworkers will find this would be a better fit for them as well.

I have all 3 systems. Here’s some not mentioned facts. 1. The outside rails on the Milwaukee dents and bends easily if hit on the right angle, and you cant correct it back once bent. 2. If security is important to yo than go for the flex system because its less obvious in color but mainly because of the positioning of the padlock loop to secure the box. On both the Klein and Packout systems the loop is off centered making it easy to simply squeeze your hand in on the side opposite to the lock to gain limited access. Whereas with the flex there’s no front lifting handle lip to raise and the lock loop is in the center. Lastly overall the Flex in a more dense plastic and feels stable and adequate to sit on if need be. Not to say you could sit on the others, you definitely can tell the difference. Besides sitting on the surface of a Milwaukee would be anything buy comfortable in terms of emergency seating.

As a toolbox enthusiast with experience using and making review videos on all of these boxes, the biggest thing to know is that ALL of these systems have pros and cons. If a “lack of accessories” is the biggest con for Milwaukee Packout, then it’s been solved by a strong community of makers. The main reason why other companies even made accessories is because they saw the Packout community do it first. If you’re looking to get into a system and you’re jealous of aspects available on other brands like Klein's bin, cup holder, or Flex’s new wall mounts, I make my own versions of all those items . My goal isn’t to just make Packout the best, many of my items work across all the systems. My goal is instead to help toolbox users overall. Other makers like Alex from packibletool, Matt from Neattools and Devin from Stack Smarter also make high quality items that expand the capabilities of your toolboxes. At the end of the day the things we need from these tool companies is bigger, better, and more unique types of boxes as soon as possible. If their design teams are working on accessories that the community can make and bring to market faster than I think the companies are wasting time and money.

I love the Klein system (has great accessories), and would certainly chose it if I was adding storage, but since I retired (commercial/industrial electrician) I started downgrading/changing my storage. It no longer sees the abuse it once did now that I'm just a DiY'er, so I went with the Hart storage system from Walmart. It certainly is not as durable as Klein, Milwaukee or Flex, but it does a great job for me and it is much less expensive. It is actually better for my needs since it is much lighter than the heavier-duty storage systems making it easier to get up and down stairs, and/or in my truck or my wife's car. It has a lot of variety in box size and configurations including drawer units for my smaller hand tools, large compartments for my power tools and has nice clear-lid storage bins for my small parts/materials. It is similar to the "name" brands with small container inserts, etc. I highly recommend it for Do It Yourselfers, but I would probably not recommend it for professionals working every day. If you like to throw your storage boxes in/out/around the work truck or you routinely have employees who do not respect your equipment investments (we all have them), the plastic is just not thick/heavy enough. I would stick to Klein or Flex. Good luck!

FLex is garbage… the latches or tabs that hold the boxes together is cheap plastic and when they break it’s really difficult to unlock and separate the boxes… they were even broken in the store!! The side accessories are basically useless for hard core workers

Thanks for this overview. I invested in the Dewalt system years ago. They were good for travel. The humidity resistance and the pressure release is good too. Festool is good for a shop, but the hard plastic worries me. I have started to use pack out for my shop - batteries and drills and drivers. I am also replacing the dewalt small parts containers - too fragile (maybe they are better now). The Milwaukee is more robust and the ability to stack on the wall is a big plus.

I think Festool's system has a bit of a different purpose. Festool's primary customer was the installer (cabinets, etc.). Their claim to fame was dust collection, which is very important in a customer's home. Their systainers were designed to transport tools, not necessarily parts (thought these came later). Each tool has its systainer set up for it so they aren't banged up during transport. Note the way Matt threw all of the tools together in these boxes. I wouldn't be doing that with my festools. Installers tend to know what tools they're going to need for a specific job so will only take them to the jobsite. They're not trying to carry the whole shop. If you look at their van setup, 1) you'll see how it all fits together, and 2) the price tag will choke you. The van is the cheap part. 🤑 I agree 100% with you about the hard plastic of the Systainer but I think the purposes of the systainer system is very different than these boxes. I agree that the Festool systainer works best around the shop. The hard plastic isn't as likely to get damaged, they protect the (expensive) tools, and the tools come with them. If they weren't part of the deal, I wouldn't pay $100+ for them. I don't have any of these systems because I don't often take my tools anywhere and I don't see the need around the shop. I do have a couple of Ridgid bins that I use for junk in the back of my truck (bungees, etc.) but just a couple and I didn't intend them for tools. They're cool and I look at them when I have some time but for as little as I'd use these, I have better places to put the money.

@@kwilliams2239I love systainers. Way better than all these bulky 3 in 1 on wheel systems. I've got systainers, metalocs, metaboxes, and the Hitachi systainers. They all work together, whether locking together or just stacking. They all take up the same footprint on shelves. They're light and strong. I use packout sorters tho, and keep batteries in a packout in the summer, bc they'll bake in a systainer

@@kwilliams2239i use Sortmo’s LBoxx for my tools, similar to Systainers. i prefer over pack out b/c they’re lightweight and still protect everything and make organizing easy. i don’t get why the pack out style boxes need to be so heavy and bulky

I think Milwaukee has a solid strategy. By letting the fanbase make all the exterior accessories. Makes for more social media attention.

I have a lot of milwaukee packout but the thing ive always been annoyed with is the color, im a neutral color kind of guy when it comes to tools and whatnot as I believe the bright colors attract aleyes and on new construction sites there are a lot of gremlins about with sticky fingers.

I went to pick up an online order at Lowe's and it took them 2 hours to find my items. Two 12' composite fascia boards. Twelve feet! How the hell do you misplace that? Now I have an online order that's 4 days overdue at Home Depot, and of course no one knows anything. Lost a week getting a deck built so far. Point being customer service can suck at either Home Depot or Lowe's. Too bad the Tough Built wasn't included. I think they will have the most advanced system once the entire line is released by summer. The rolling base box with drawers looks like a sure winner to me. I think they should have lead with that to make a bigger splash entering the market.

Only thing i use my packout for is transporting my tools from my home shop to my cabin 2500 miles away. Don't need all the accessories like a workman at a job site does. I went the cheap route and got the kobalt. Under $180 and holds all my tools, batteries and chargers, and fasteners I need.

The Toughbuilt Stack Techs are nice, the plastic feels strong enough to build a car with, definitely alot stronger than the plastic they use for cars. I just replaced all my Husky tool boxes and Kobalt Tool bag with most of the currently available Boxes and the tool tote. All the Dewalt and Craftsman tool boxes feel cheap and flimsy. The Flex ones are pretty cool. Toughbuilt is definitely my favorite and their hand tools are really nice too

I believe milwaukee is going to come out with a new revised packout by end of next year. If not, they're gonna lose a lot of their base. I personally only own the wall unit for my drills/impacts and the 2 & 3 drawers(non mobile)

The Milwaukee fan-base is probably a big reason why they haven’t gotten into it. Why spend your own money on R&D when everyone else will do it for you? Kind of a double edged sword, as I understand the appeal of OEM equipment, but its also not a terrible business decision.
