What an incredible album, man. Exceeded my expectations completely, due to how much I loved their previous one, Blood & Stone. My top 3 songs from it, and my top 5 Sevendust albums: 1. Messenger 2. Won't Stop The Bleeding 3. Superficial Drug ___________________________ 1. Animosity 2. Seasons 3. Next 4. Truth Killer 5. Blood & Stone

As a long-time super fan, I'd rank this easily a Top 5 Sevendust album. It takes Blood From A Stone's excellent vocal and guitar melodies from Lajon and Clint, but instead of being generic like the vast majority of that record, it combines those strengths with the weird heaviness of Home and proggy heaviness of Kill The Flaw. Basically, all the strengths of Sevendust are here, and objectively song-by-song it's "all killer, no filler". As far as the Top 5 Sevendust albums, honestly you can order them in any way based on personal preference. I'd say the Top 5 (in no particular order) are Animosity, Cold Day Memory, Kill The Flaw, All I See Is War, and Truth Killer.

The album opener felt a little odd, but I got used to it. Overall, it's a fine album, some songs didn't stand that much to me but the majority did, and they were No Revolution, Everything, Sick Mouth and Holy Water. Not my favorite release but far from my least.

Yes, it's pretty easily my favorite album of this year. Not even close to being Sevendust's best album or anything but it still manages to be the best of the rest. Music, especially in the hard rock/alt-metal genre, is just so boring now I feel like. All the older legacy bands like Godsmack and Disturbed are just parodies of themselves at this point but Sevendust is still innovating their sound just enough each record to keep you interested and invested in them making people really excited to hear what they deliver next. The newer up-and-coming bands are too poppy sounding and a lot of the heavier bands are also infusing too much pop in their songs and computer-generated riffs now but that's what's popular now. It's just not what metal is supposed to be and it's just a bad combination of genres. Sevendust is doing it too with a song like Superficial Drug and the opening track, I Might Let The Devil Win. I like Devil though, it's unique and the ending rewards with you good payoff to get you ready for the rest of the album. Superficial Drug is quite easily my least favorite Sevendust song, quite possibly out of their whole discography. And they made it a single that's getting a lot of traction which just proves the mainstream audiences want that pop infused Starset-esque songs and it's just terrible in my opinion. The singles on this album were poor choices, the rest of the tracks are solid Sevendust songs that you'd more typically expect to hear on a Sevendust album. It's different though at the same time, the songs build more to the bridges and breakdowns and not the chorus's as much hence, why people are saying the chorus's are weak. And the songs with the stronger chorus's have weaker bridges like Won't Stop the Bleeding and No Revolution that just have these short little guitar solos to serve as the bridge. Then you have a track like Truth Killer where the bridge just rips your face off or Sick Mouth with a great bridge section too. And Leave Hell Behind, which many people say is one of the weaker tracks, has a great bridge that really picks it up. Messenger is the track that puts it all together and delivers a really great song all the way through. Great verses, extremely catchy chorus and a great bridge. I don't understand how anybody is claiming Messenger is a filler because it is anything but that. It holds up right up there with Sevendust's best songs. The only non-single that isn't really doing much for me is Love and Hate. And the singles Superficial Drug and Everything are two of the weakest Sevendust songs in a while but overall, it's a step up from Blood & Stone for sure. To me, Truth Killer is a combination of All I See Is War and Blood & Stone. The heavy electronic elements and unorthodox melodies from Blood & Stone combined with the chunkiness and more stereotypical All I See Is War with subtle hints of the proggy style of Kill The Flaw in there as well. It's a solid 8/10 album.

Just got into Sevendust recently after a friend recommended I listen to their latest album 🙂 I was just thinking as well… I’m curious to see you react to the newest album by From Ashes to New, Blackout 🙂

Ive always found Sevendust to be a bit unorthodox in their stylr and sound and i tend to like the lead singers vocals shining though on their less heavy songs, but i do reqlly like them. I consider them part of the Alter Bridge universe. They did feature myles and mark on 2 songs in 2008ish. Love those. Cant wait to hear more and more from them.

Not a bad song on the album, give it more listens. It grows on you

If growling is not your thing, you don't need to limit yourself to only their last few albums. Early-ish releases like Seasons and Animosity should work for you too.

Dude did you even listen to the whole album all the way through?..LJ vocals bn an issue? Lajon shows more vocal range on Truth Kilker than most any other bands out there. His vocals are all over the place, in a grt way!...

good review. my take is same like your point "forgettable". not many great chorus, and many forgettable songs especially Leave Hell Behind, Messenger, Love & Hate. sleeper song. the only good songs to me are the ones they released early. (fence, everything, holy water, superficial drug). it's like they already knew these are A+ songs that will trick people into buying the album, whereby the remaining 8 tracks were just fillers... Lol...

That's funny because I believe the exact opposite. The singles are the weakest songs on it and the rest of the tracks are bangers. Just goes to show you this band is incredibly diverse and what people look for in a typical Sevendust album is different depending on who you talk to but yet everybody still likes it in the end.
@JAFNISUHAIL

@@trainofthough0242 well it depends on which kind of arrangement people like. 7D is indeed diverse, and they can even do acoustic album, which is still a banger. the early released track to me are more catchy. the rest sounds the same in verse (guitar riffs) with slow chorus, makes them longwinded. i call them sleepy songs. haha... i like their heavy stuffs btw (Alpha album)
