Today i visited the Didcot Railway Centre for their Wednesday Summer steaming. The main reason for visiting was to capture Fletcher Jennings 0-4-0T No.3 "Captain Baxter" working away from her home at the bluebell. Didcot Railway Centre are always good at putting visiting locomotives to their uses so this was a must see. Also seen operating is GWR Large Prairie No. 4144 in her gorgeous BR Green, As well as some of the static locomotives in the shed. The weather was bright and the centre was too mobbed which proved for perfect filming conditions :)
Locomotives Featured:
- Fletcher Jenning Class B 0-4-0T No. 3 Captain Baxter (Visiting from the Bluebell Railway)
- GWR Large Prairie No. 4144
Locomotives Featured On Static Display:
- Ex-Cardiff Railway No. 1338
- GWR 57XX No. 3738
- GWR Castle Class No. 5051 "Earl Bathurst"
- GWR 2884 No. 3822
- GWR 14XX No. 1466
- Class 14 No. D1956
One final note, i noticed that Didcot Railway Centre has been operating very few events this year, such as galas. Whilst the WWI event and the signalling centre appear to be successful, the lack of major enthusiast events may have a toll on the GWS. I accept that they are expierencing a lack of motive power. With 6023 on holiday and 93 being very expensive to steam, this leaves only 4144 which, if fails will be an issue. It also appears that most of the fleet is on static display with most of the restoration works being handed over to newbuilds such as 2999 and 1014, is any of the home fleet being restored to working order? What im saying is, the centre doesn't appear to be in a great financial state. So please, show some support for this incredible place :)
