all that matters is that you cut off the oxygen. so that should definitely work, just keep the spray close enough to where its definitely not getting any air from the sides or whatnot. a runaway is when a seal goes out and its getting fuel/oil (both, or, depends on how it goes bad) uncontrollably so turning it off does nothing because diesel runs on compression and the off button basically just shuts off the fuel. so if you cant cut off fuel then all you can do is cut off air

I went to diesel school back in the 80's and about 10 teams of two people tore down a 6-71 Detroit and put it back together again, ran the rack, and start it up on the engine stand. No water in it, or oil for that matter. We were suppose to just start it up, pop the rack one time to verify it idled, then shut it down. My neighbors ran away the instant it started! The noise a 6-71 Detroit makes makes turning about 5000 rpm is incredible! It probably happened before because the teacher had a metal plate to slam on the blower intake at the ready. The reason no oil? A runaway Detroit can continue to run off of oil pull up from the crankcase at that speed, even with the airbox tripped.

I've seen so many diesel runaway videos that if I ever buy one, I'm not driving it anywhere until I install a emergency valve in the air intake.

I could see missing it at the time, but if you would have flipped the turbo cover around it would have a nice flat edge that would stop all the air instead of having to line up the turbo cover perfectly

At what point in time do you put the phone down??..lol.... love the old dude laughing in the background, that laugh tells me he's had 1 or 2 run away on him, just gotta stop the air!! boys, keeping the new turbo cover is a good tool to keep in the shop.
