I admire your commitment to learning about how to work on these old vehicles but I would suggest getting a service manual, it would save you a lot of time and frustration to read how to correctly disassemble and assemble these components. In the end you got it apart but the way you got there was kind of backwards. I have a CJ5 a few years newer than yours and a 61 scout with the same transmission and tcase as your Jeep, I can tell you they are very capable even in their stock form and a lot of fun to drive, I have been all over Texas in mine and the Rocky mountains in Colorado.

I do have a service manual for it, but there's hardly any info for the tanny and transfer in it.
