I definitely resonate with the “girl time” with watching KZitemrs. I am an extreme introvert and that kind of “socializing” did not drain me in the same way being with friends in IRL does lol!

I find the best way to digital detox is to just find something else to do. Like they say “the best way to get over someone is to get under someone else” lol. Anyway I find what helps the most is reading a book, going for a walk preferably with someone, going to watch a movie (it’s a screen but a very different screen), say yes to and actually attend social events, and cleaning something with music or a audiobook in the background and not tv or KZitem.

It’s wild how “the algorithm” really can reflect deep parts of our psyches. Tiktok started doing that to me, kind of constantly showing me things I’ve never really vocalized wanting or feeling lol. Freaked me out!

One corner of KZitem I personally find valuable is (largely) patron-funded and/or mission-driven, wealthy (enough) people sharing deep domain knowledge. I'm talking about KZitemrs like Technology Connections (How everyday tech works), Dr Geoff Lindsey (speech, language, accents), Lab Muffin (skincare), Not Just Bikes (Urban Planning), Nourished by Science, Nutrition Made Simple, etc. They aren't afraid of offending advertisers and I always learn something from their videos.

The same thing happened to me with my aunt. When she passed away, she had so many things in her house, so many new clothes and shoes with tags that hadn't been worn, that I understood that she was filling a huge void in her life. I wish I had known about it before so I could have helped her.

Today several plans fell through and I felt lonely. This then created a strong urge to shop in me (for beauty products I don't need). Long story short I resisted buying stuff I don't need and bought a pot of local honey at a farmers shop instead. It fulfilled my itch and as my household loves to eat a croissant with 'fancy honey' on Saturday mornings, this was actually something luxurious but useful. A small win.

Keep making all the content! Personal as well! It feels like old KZitem to have someone really share authentically. I love how philosophical you are getting with your ideas! It’s like watching someone going through the entire proceeds of shedding something that isn’t working for them (also me too! I’m right there with you and having lots of shared and reflected moments) it’s honestly so therapeutic.

Thank you for this - next week's installment will get personal indeed, as far as sharing an actual day-in-the-life, we'll see how that goes! I also realized that while it might be an incredibly boring day at home (with way too much background phone time), I didn't buy anything or go shopping at all, which seems pretty rare to see in a daily vlog these days 😄

I feel so cared for😊 I'm totally with you on the experiences of consuming KZitem. I entered this world a couple of years ago via a love of music and googling songs. Then BAM! I discovered sustainable style and thrifters were here and I have been roped in ever since! Now I have to be so careful- unsubscribing, only listen/watch while cooking, remove from watch later. Dude. Its power is intense. This is compelling content you are creating, thank you. We are living in a new world and our brains are not built to withstand this pressure. We need to have these conversations.

You are so right on the power of algorithm... I can remember me watching classical music performances on youtube and thinking "that it what youtube is for", because on youtube I could listen to artists and performances I could never hear live or on tv. Since then, somehow I started to watch influencers and got in different bubbles, I never had heard befor. Not all of these were nessesary a bad thing at all! I whatched sustanebility content, veganism content, fair fashion, kibbe body types, color analisys... and honestly: I was never ever in my life so interested in fashion as in the last couple of years! Before that, I bought clothes because I needed them...or worst case, when I bought without a need, it was because I went in a store and saw something and wanted it after seeing. Since I whatch fashion content on youtube, I bought so many things online and always have some ideas what I would "need" just because I saw something on a creator and want it for myself. And as you say, it is endless: you see a video, youtube serves you another one, you want things, and you are already in a bubble. Watching and wantig. You mentioned, that you bought the most stuff as you were lonly or had other problems in life. So true for me! I also find myself watching content and wanting things when I'm missing something in real life. Thank you so much for your videos!❤

In the name of transparency I would like to know what and how much information influencers get from YT about their followers. The algorithms gather and connect a lot of information in order to target us. Is that information shared with the content creators themselves?
@Iquey
2 күн бұрын
I doubt it. Unless the viewers directly interact with the channel the creators might at most get demographic information and watch time like TikTok. TikTok also doesn't show you profile views unless you turn it on and let other people see if you've viewed their profile, etc. I almost bought TikTok promotion with my Google play balance yesterday, just to explore the demographic push out options, but I didn't think they were worth paying as a casual tiktoker. Instead I rather pay for KZitem premium with my Google play balance from doing Google opinion rewards surveys.

@@undercovernerd6848 Personally, I don't believe that these tech companies respect individual privacy where there is an advantage or money to be made off having information. Recently I went to a sports goods store to buy a soccer ball for a child. I had never been to that store or any of its branches before, nor had I ever bought anything online from them. The check-out was self-service with no cash accepted, so I had to pay with my bank debit card. Two days later I got an email from that store asking me to evaluate my purchase of a soccer ball. Now, the store had my bank account number from my debit card, but where did they get my email address from? I was addressed using my name exactly as it is on my banking card, which has no similarity with my email address name. This means that when you pay with a debit card, the store also records your name. But how could they know my email address? It is illegal for banks to disclose your email address to third parties. Meanwhile I have learned that there are data companies that collect names and email addresses, for instance, from labels on packages sent to you. (The shipper often asks for your email address so they can notify you that the package will be delivered at a certain time on a specific day.) The store gets your full name off your banking card. They then run your name through the data and find the email address that matches your name. Now they have your account number and banking information, your name, your ground address and your email address. Needless to say, I did not do them the favor of evaluating my ball purchase, because that would have confirmed the link between my name and my email address. Who knows how much other information about individuals gets traded all the time.

No criticism- perhaps a video idea since I really like hearing your opinions. Would you ever want to share your thoughts on para social relations with influencers and how that triggers a need to ‘support a friend’ by clicking on their links and hence getting sucked in into the cycle of consumerism? Instead of consumer guilt, it seems like it almost triggers the same emotion as one might get If they were doing a charitable deed

speaking of charitable deeds. did you know that when you go to the grocery store and they ask for a donation sometimes? turns out it's bc they already made that donation. it's that you are paying back the store for the donation they made.

It didn’t hit me until almost the end of the video, but being on “media” as I will call it was here long before YT, IG, TT, etc. The TV itself was addictive way back when with all the ads etc. We turned off our TV long before streaming availability. My kids never saw commercials so they didn’t have that see want mechanism all our friends kids did. My friends didn’t understand. We always have the choice with our phones, computers, etc. we just have to make that choice.
@Alexas.nobuyyear
Күн бұрын
Absolutely! And this channel right now is documenting my journey to take control and try and make better choices. I admire you for being able to make that choice so much earlier than many others. As I make more progress towards that goal though I do feel that some of it is a systemic problem that's hard to totally opt out of, which makes the choices harder than they could be otherwise. I still think that ultimately we have the responsibility to try and live our own lives the way we want to but I'll continue to try and provide a voice on the media that provides a helpful perspective towards this pursuit, after this initial year.

KZitem being a search engine VS an algorithmic feed: Honestly, I don't mind scrolling through my homepage to find new stuff sometimes, but I HATE how the search feature is absolute garbage now. I will search for a very specific video and instead of giving me true search results or closest matches, it gives me popular videos, videos like this, most watched, you may like, watch again, (not to mention all the damn shorts!)... And it makes it so hard for me to find new stuff ON MY OWN. I'll do a search for an obscure video I know exists and won't be able to find it 😡

This was an interesting topic because I wonder what made the algorithm recommend you on my feed. You are the only channel I’ve subscribed to on this topic.
