Fabulous lenses: My only disappoinment is the fact that the flight case is now an optional extra. Given the cost of both lenses I would rather the soft case be an optional extra.

i'm actually really upset with these lenses. Market pressure and hype pushing Canon to make lighter weight lenses at the expense of image quality. I will be picking up the version III to compare with my 600 L II and I'll make a video about this. But either way I'll be stocking on a an extra copy or 2 if i can of the 600L II and 400 L II before they sell out. The new 400 III Is WAY worse than the second version. The 600 Isn't as bad, but still.

Rudy I agree with you. Scenario changed. During olden days company's consumers were wedding pros and wildlife Photography ambassadors. Now a majority of market is occupied by Amaeture wildlife photographer's.Thus I humbly request you to reintroduce canons 400 mm 5.6 lens with some changes. F11 lenses is not a solution.F11 lens idea is only a marketing strategy in connection with R5 sale.Nikons 200 500 was a full dedication to amaetures.we are also expecting such dedication from canon also, as early as possible.

Hello Canon, are the MTF charts published on CanonUSA correct for the new 600III and 400 III? The new versions seem to show lower MTF scores. I wonder if this was a mistake in publishing incorrect MTF charts, or if reducing weight at the expense of some image quality was the priority?

Hi Rudy or any other friends here, why do super telephoto lenses' maximum aperture is limited to f4 and f5 or f5.6. Right now 400mm is the only telephoto lens with the widest maximum aperture of F2.8. What are the challenges or factors that stop Canon or Nikon from incorporating apertures wider than F4 in 500mm, 600mm and 800mm lenses. Is it purposely restricted due to optical reasons, or physical limitations like lack of space to add a wider diaphragm, accommodate additional motors, electronics, etc., or lack of technology. I tried to look for it in many websites and photography pages, but I couldn't find the info.

EF 400 mm f/1.8 would be impractical because it's too big. Canon can make this lens on special order.
@patricksmith2553
4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it really comes to down to size, weight and costs involved to name a few reasons. It is completely possible to make any of the lenses you mentioned or could dream up within reason, but nobody would be able to afford to buy them as costs would be enormous. The fact is that costs would be so high and therefor restrictive for most people it wouldn't make much sense for Canon or Nikon to make such a lens. Canon dabbled in this before and actually so has Nikon, Canon produced an 1200mm f5.6L lens which costs $120,000 and they sold about 23 total over the years to a mixture of intelligence agencies, wire services and governments. Only a handful of normal photographer's bought or own one. You basically need two tripods to use it, one for the lens and one for the camera to get the best results as it's truly massive. I got the chance to play with one and it was quite an experience and I own and use a 400mm f2.8 VR lens almost daily. The lenses you mentioned or dream about would be truly massive and expensive, limiting their usage and potential buyers. Sigma made a 200-500mm f2.8 lens and it was relatively inexpensive at $25,000 but nobody wanted to buy one as they are massive, ugly forest green in color and have terribly slow autofocus performance. Canon sells about 7,500 total units of each new version 400mm f2.8 IS lens in the world market over the few years they are produced before a new version is released. Nikon slightly less, but you get the idea of about what a production run is and these super-tele lenses are still considered "rare!" However if Canon or Nikon ever did decide to make a lens like a 500mm f2.8 IS/VR you can bet it would cost about $25,000 therefor making it much less attainable and I'd be surprised if they could sell more than 100 total units over a five year period if that. Canon or Nikon though would not know how many units they could sell and I'm honestly just giving this my best guess, but my point is it's risky business and would very easily backfire in their face and they could easily lose money by over estimating sales numbers. The R&D costs, manufacturing costs, etc. would be very high and without knowing how many units would sell or need to be produced you could very easily make a massive error in deciding what to ultimately charge the customer for the lens.

Why do you now need to send your lens to a service centre to replace the foot? They appear to still just have four screws like the MK II versions, and with those you shipped the small foot with the lens!
@steoleary
5 жыл бұрын
If you read the manual for the v2 lenses it says that Canon service have to replace the foot for you too, but it really is just 4 screws and I managed to replace mine myself. I'm guessing that they say that because they don't want to say it's user replaceable and then end up getting sued when some idiot doesn't do all the screws up properly and their £10k lens falls off the tripod.

I wonder why Canon did not release the new 800m f5.6II?
@patricksmith2553
4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was thinking that too, although the current 800mm f5.6 IS lens is actually the equivalent of a version II super-tele lens already. You're right it would technically be called a version II though. Nikon's 800mm f5.6 FL smokes the Canon 800mm f5.6 IS, it's not even close optically trust me. Not that the Canon has poor image quality, it's just that the Nikon 800mm f5.6 has astonishingly impressive image quality. I personally own the Nikon 400mm f2.8 VR for flexibility reasons as I shoot mainly sports and breaking news type events and the 400mm takes teleconverters so well. However I have had the opportunity to test out both the Nikon and Canon 800mm f5.6 lenses over the years as I work for a major wire service. The Canon 800mm f5.6 could really use an upgrade in my opinion, which would hopefully bring it closer to the performance of the Nikon, which I believe came out a few years after the Canon. The Nikon to be fair does cost more money than the Canon, but you do get a really nice custom made and paired 1.25x teleconverter for the extra $3,500 with the Nikon 800mm lol!

@djack41

Tiny? How do you know what it costs to manufacture? Mindless post.
@patricksmith2553
4 жыл бұрын
@@djack41 Actually he is correct and the much larger ED/Super ED or Fluorite lenses cost more to manufacture the bigger they get and were talking massive in these two lenses shown here. The 400mm f2.8 has a front diameter of 158mm and the 600mm f4 a diameter of 164mm, which is quite large. The version III lenses have only one large front element as opposed to three in the version II lenses. There is no way to say for sure that Canon produces these for less money than the version II lenses as R&D costs and or other improvements may have made costs go up. However we can for sure say that Canon is saving some money using (two) less large and rare elements in the optical formula. I've heard from multiple people that switched to these new version III lenses from the version II that image quality has actually taken a hit and Canon has simply altered the MTF testing methods to make them appear to have improved image quality. I can't say for sure that this is true or has anything to do with having less large glass elements in the design, but that would possibly be an answer if true.

The current 5DSr is no slouch. Very underrated and overlooked camera in my opinion. Yes it lacks a bit of dynamic range but its noticeably sharper and more detailed than my D850. So you could make do with one until they update it. It really does make spectacular images as long as there's no major exposure issues. Even though its only 5 fps ive used it on wildlife and even birds in flight quite successfully with the 200-400.
