Shepherd's Journal actually has long history, i found this is official Atlantis Wikia called "Keepers of the Journal" Solon - Studied the Scrolls of Aziz, recognized language written to be Atlantean and not Mesopotamian. Constantine - Hired a team of scholars to study and "decode" the Scrolls of Aziz. Thorfinn Karlsefni - Founded Keepers of the Journal, sole survivor of Viking expedition to find Atlantis in 997. (Viking Proloque) Leif Eriksson - Believed to have found and studied the Shepherd's Journal in Vinland. Snorri Thorfinnsson - Son of Thorfinn, attempted an expedition to Atlantis, bartered the Shepherd's Journal away to escape conflict with Mayans. Americo Vespucci - Given the Shepherd's Journal from former Mayans in 1499, attempted to study the Journal unsuccessfully before giving it to da Vinci in 1500. Leonardo da Vinci - Given the Shepherd's Journal from Vespucci in 1500, successfully translates the Journal before it is confiscated by Borgia in 1502. Nicolaus Copernicus - Believed to have studied the Shepherd's Journal, likely by helping da Vinci decipher the book and learning of the theory that the sun does not move. Philip II - Drew inspriation from the Shepherd's Journal for the spires of El Escorial. Isaac Newton - Believed to have studied the Shepherd's Journal while it was at Cambridge University. Benjamin Franklin - Said to have studied the Shepherd's Journal while at Versailles in 1788. Ludwig II - Believed to have studied the Shepherd's Journal while it was at the British Museum, drawing inspiration for the designs he commissioned. Ignatius Donnelly - Returned the Shepherd's Journal to Iceland in 1862, studied Journal for reference in publishing Atlantis: The Antediluvian World in 1882. where it was finally was found by Thaddeus Thatch in 1911 and was given to Milo Thatch in 1914

Most people I've seen usually complained about the scene when the leviathan hid around instead of imeadeatly attacking the Ulysses. The leviathan isn't a living organism you have to remember it's a war machine powered by the crystal technology . A more advanced version of the fish vehicles really this thing has it's own artificial intelligence with that. something I noticed is maybe the leviathan didn't see the ship at first. It doesn't even move till after the light already passes over it lying on the ocean floor. So perhaps it detected either the light or vibrations of movement coming from the sub then once it came around the corner of the underwater cave pillar it found it's target and attacked. Another thing I noticed is the leviathan seems to get very confused when it's attacked around the head by the subs. Even letting go of the Ulysses. Not from pain of course since this thing I doubt feels it. The leviathan does appear to have poor eye sight as it mostly attacked by thrashing about with it's claws and firing his energy laser at far away targets.

good theory! mine has always been that the sub was the first of its kind cause in the ocean floor you see ancient ships and regular ships but not another sub. so I think the leviathan was been wary at first cause he probably hasnt seen a ship like that, so he was flanking the Ulysses just as precaution

@MultiDocdoom

I agree entirely with you, the leviathan could have been in a hibernation like state for centuries attacking on the odd ship here and there. Its program would have been used to normal surface vessels. When it woke up from this, it might have thought it being tectonic plate movement, something its used too, but once I encountered this weird machine of unknown origin, and still being programmed to make war on all unknown targets, it went at it. If it did notice the ulyssus earlier, it was likely trying to program new information about this abnormal create, analyzing it. The bad targeting might have been a combination of hibernation sleep as well as lack of maintenance. I have no doubt this machine has some weaknesses And one weakness all machines have is degrading over time. Its systems are likely old and some scanners and eye components likely need replacing, but since Atlantis is unable to provide for those regular war time parts, it is slowly dieing off.

I really prefer this to the other intro - it adds more mystery. It's kind of lame knowing that Atlantis exists before they even get there. Then again the promos made no secret about the fact Atlantis existed or its nature. I just like this intro because it makes me more intrigued about the actual existence of the place, and raises the tension about actually going to look for it.

I like both, and feel this one gives a bit of context to the "fall of atlantis" intro. apparently they were really big on nuking things, seeing as their lobster-bots come with WMDs by default, so with that in mind, the blast we see in the other intro must have been an experimental WMD greater than the Hydrogen bomb. Maybe a Tsar Bomba (or even greater) level weapon. can't help but wonder why they'd want weapons so powerful. to conquer the world sure, but stuff like these weapons just seems like overkill unless we're talking about The Empire (star wars) levels of "control through fear"

I really think this is great that they put this in Icelandic and I understood most of it! I still am glad the movie went with the opening they did. It tied Atlantis into the writings of Plato and his description of how it was destroyed. It made you understand more of what they had lost when Milo and company met them later on. Plus you have the connection of Kida with her mother and how Kida would carry on that heritage.

Actually, I think it would fit better after the title. This scene would not only introduce the Shepard's Journal, but also how many others had dared to seek the legend of Atlantis before Milo and his ragtag crew came along. Then, after the Leviathan destroys the ship, the movie would jump ahead to 1914, where Milo is practicing for his presentation.

In my region (I'm from Uruguay) this prologue didn't come included in the VHS. It did however come with the DVD as one of the deleted scenes. Until I first saw it on the DVD I always wondered where those missing takes from the trailer came from. Great scene, but it works more as a short or deleted scene than a prologue from the movie. The one they ended up using was more useful to the narrative, establishing a lot of important plot points.

Everyone says make a live action remake film but what about a Disney+ mini series instead? To help stretch out the run time, have each episode open with a prologue like this that foreshadows the episodes’ storyline with Milo (i.e. the premiere opens with Atlantis’ destruction like in the film to establish its real, episode 2 opens with this to show what’s in store for the submarine. etc.)
