Two things I just noticed: 1. The captain looks like he could be related to Whitmore. Maybe he has Viking ancestors? 2. “Do your worst!” basically means “Valhalla, here I come!”

I wish this alternate opening was kept in the film, placed between the eventual opening scene of Atlantis' destruction and Milo's rehearsal for his expedition proposal, just to provide some additional reinforcement to the theme and idea that people in this fictional alternate Earth had indeed been searching for Atlantis for thousands of years and also hinting at why Atlantis had not been found and been reduced to mere myth. Because the Leviathan had obliterated anyone that tried to come close to the underwater tunnel leading to the city, thus leaving only speculation and skepticism to flourish in absence of the ability to find the sunken continent.

Such a good opening. Doesnt over-stay its welcome but, leaves you wanting more. Wish modern movies and games would remember that point. Also I like that they didn't speak english in this scene. I dont speak Icelandic but, to me, that makes it better in my opinion because it sounds cool and seperates the English speaking audience from the vikings era. Truly establishing the "throughout history" vibe so well. If they spoke English it just would'nt hit the same.

…the vikings were almost completely civilized by the mid 9th century…by this time, only 3 years from the 12th century, the Vikings had settled into the civilized way of life in Greenland and a very small part of America. They became more domesticated and less the sea faring brigands that they were reputable for between the 2nd and 9th centuries. If anything, a group like this probably would have been exiled from their tribe and that would’ve have been one of the few reasons for them to actually be out “roaming the seas” for lack of better words. Not very well thought out if you ask me. At least they got the cultural design right. That’s something

Even if the Leviathan didn't kill them they wouldn't have made it. The entrance was miles below the surface. Milo and the others could only get down there with the submarine.

@@bellamovie2I actually own a vhs tape that includes this viking scene in the opening and the vhs is a part of some vhs releases in Europe that included the scene before the Atlantis sinking scene. So the viking scene was actually the first scene I ever saw in the movie when I watched it for the first time (I was 3-4 years old) 😂

I think that the only problem with this prologue is that the leviathan's jump is too exagerated for something that big and the laser beam too overkill for such a small ship. Should have had it only as a silhouette beneath the water followed by the tentacles and claws shredding the ship to bits. Would've kept it more mysterious (though it'd still give it away at the beginning of the movie)

I think they could have put it in after the sinking of Atlantis and the main title, but before the part where Milo is practicing in his boiler room. It would show how while many had tried to seek out Atlantis, none of them were able to get as far as Milo and his crew would.

This was used as the opening for the tie in game Trial By Fires demo, the Search for the Journal. The games help file also included the complete history of the journal. Including mentioning that it had an Atlantean crystal embedded in the books spine giving it limited self regeneration, explaining how the book survived being lost at sea.
@TheRealQuestionIs11

The only things I don’t like about this intro are the tentacles the leviathan has (maybe it has them in the movie later, but it’s hard to say for sure, it definitely didn’t use them the same way if so) and that the prologue would imply that the journal made it back to the shores of Iceland which is less believable (though I concede this is fiction so it’s whatever). Also, the explosion created by the leviathan looks comparable to the one that caused the fall of Atlantis itself, and doesn’t line up with the way it’s beam works later in the movie (plus, there’s a ton of mostly intact ship wrecks on the sea floor when the crew encounters the leviathan, where as that Viking ship is definitely not intact lol). Makes me wonder how early this trailer was compared to the final version of the movie, and if they originally intended to have more of the movie in Iceland to cover the retrieval of the journal.
