1. Belly breathing 2. Nose breathing first and last 5 mins. 3. Cadence or rhythemic breathing. Steps vs inhalation/exhalation.

This week I made a decision and started to run. I played handball in high school and i was a sprinter but i could never just run without a purpose i was always dying and couldnt breathe and it was a whole mess. I watched your videos before starting. Bought a new pair of running shoes (afta a feet test) and tried to follow your advice related to breathing and arm and leg work and woww there was no choking no dying and okay i started with 800m divided into 4x100 and 2x200m intervals with breaks but hey i made it and i never thought running can make me feel happy but it did. thanks for the videos inspired me a lot :)

Thanks for these tips Nate. I've been a trail/beach runner for years but I've just started using a treadmill for long-ish Zone 2 runs, mostly because I can dial in the right pace to force myself to run slow enough. Today I tried nose breathing in sections and found to my surprise that my heart rate went DOWN by around ten bpm. A bit of a revelation really! Can't wait to try it again!

People tend to make fun of people who worry about their breathing, but when it comes to running, how you breathe is important. That is why I'm here. I started running a few months ago and I'm currently on 5 to 6k three to four times a week. I run at roughly 7 mins per km at about 165 cadence (according to my Garmin 735XT). I try to inhale for 6 steps, exhale 6. I feel comfortable doing that, but I just want to know if I can improve my breathing to improve my performance. Should I breathe faster or slower? PS. I'm 51 years old and I decided to try "barefoot running" with my Vibrams. I haven't run for a few years so I'm unfit and about 10 to 15 kgs overweight and my calf muscles are pretty weak which is why it's taking me so long to build up my mileage.

Not sure if you're still monitoring comments on this old video bit I'm curious to get your thoughts on the merits of inhaling and exhaling through the nose during a run vs. inhaling though the nose and exhaling through the mouth. I actually have the opposite problem of most runners in that I've never run with my mouth open unless I'm doing multiple sprint intervals, so I'm wondering if i should be doing more exhalation through my mouth for better performance.

I have questions!!! When talking about cadence and breathing rhythmically, you started with 4 steps per breath and then move up to even 6, with 2 steps per breath referenced in harder-effort hill-type workouts. You also mentioned 4 steps/inhale and 6 steps/exhale - the way I'm running right now it's more like 2 - 2.5 steps/breath with longer on the inhale if anything, and if I try to control it too much or extend the breathing out to more steps/breath, I feel like I'm running out of air. Cadence is around 83 or 85 usually (I think), at least on short runs. May I please have some tips? Thanks! Oh! Another question! Is the nose breathing mile supposed to be both inhaling AND exhaling through the nose or just inhaling? I had understood it to be just inhaling. Also, I find that I've been almost "pursed-lip exhaling" to lend more support to my diaphragm when I run - is that normal? Or does that mean am I trying to run too fast? Thanks! :) :) :)
@discover-titan

Inhale and exhale with an odd number so you are exhaling on each side in turn in for 4 out for 3. Less stress on your body and ensures you are not exhaling in the same side every time

I've been dealing with abdominal stitches on the last 25% of my long run and I cannot seem to figure out what's going on. I'm not sure if its dehydration as I've tried more electrolyte, less electrolyte, and no electrolye at all (bonk city) without any meaningful change as far as the stitch goes. It's frustrating as it can get so bad that I end up having to stretch every quarter mile or cut my run short all together. I'm hoping some of these exercises can help me.

Hi there, I am having trouble keeping my heart rate down while running. About 5 to 6 minutes into my run (running at a pace of about 6 to 6.5 mph on a treadmill) my HR spikes to about 180 and I gotta stop and then wait almost a minute to continue. Is this normal? I am trying to run a 1.5 mile (joining the Air Force soon) and I am doing it in 15:48 mins... with all the stops I do I could probably do it in 13 minutes but I lose control of my breath when my HR spikes. I have been trying interval training (one minute at maximum) and one minute jogging and it has helped a lot (i used to take about 22 minutes a couple months ago and i have been training since december) but i still don't have a grasp on how to keep my HR down and steady while running...I lose my form and then breathing is hard. Any tips? Thank you

Hi, I think this the wrong approach to breathing from the Nose. As you run for the long-distance, body put more force to breathe from the nose, and you lose your stamina because your lungs filled with carbon dioxide soon. So that's why breathing from the nose is not recommended from a Long-distance instead of this you should use your mouth for breathing.

A common cause of breathing issues in running if posture fixes don't solve it is chronic lung disease like mild asthma or EIB (which is different from asthma). Especially if you have a history of breathing problems or you are a smoker and you are having breathing problems, see a doctor to rule out lung issues.
