Eyes on the prize Sam, that Evo is a real gem and worthy to restore

Sam adding power windows defeats the purpose of it being a RS. You haven't bitten off more than you can chew, its mostly cosmetic damage that we've seen so far. The leaks and stuff are all things that happen when a cars been siting for a while you just have to re-gasket the engine and find a trustworthy body shop in japan to swap the panel and redo the paint. Let this project take as much time as it needs because once everything is done well I'm sure you wont regret it when you finally get to enjoy the evo.

Be careful when pursuing the idea of acid dipping the entire chassis. I was going to do that to my R32 but I was informed by a fair few older resto mod guys that told me it has a knack of getting acid trapped in some spots and then it ends up rotting from the inside out with the acid.. Keep it up lad

Power windows were a factory option and really don't add much weight at all, it's well worth it for the convenience. That said, I do think it's a bit odd as frankly I think restoring then proceeding to drive a TME makes no sense because of what it'd be worth restored. as opposed to e.g. a regular 6 or even a 6 RS.

Man just keep it TME spec. Crank windows, poverty spec door handles(lz jokes😂), the works. That’s what make it an oem race car. All the weight savings, deleted bits and whatnot. Also, oil leaks are typical from cars that have been sitting. My alltracs engine bay is DISGUSTING bc it sat for ten years before I got it and it now leaks from everywhere. Lastly, I don’t think you’re in over your head, a ton of people have jumped into much worse cars and made them good again. Don’t acid dip it, I’d have it media blasted, have whatever rust treated then epoxy prime and paint the entire thing inside and out

Hey Sam, i'm currently restoring a REPU from scratch (it's totally disassembled, frame got sandblasted, spray galvanized and protected by Raptor paint now). The problem with a bath is that you might damage the not so sturdy parts and lose the orientation it currently has, meaning, the chassis might become warped and twisted slightly, which can be a problem. Hence i went with spray galvanizing, it's by far not as hot, but it does not reach the inner parts if it's a tube. Probably the better option on a car as you probably don't have too many closed pipes and stuff in the structural part (unlike a pickup in my case). Just my 2 cents, keep it up :)

Its worth the effort. I know they sold a handfull of evo 6 tme's in australia, but not the stripped down rs models. But only a few normal tme's. I raced one once, off the lights, back in 03. I was on my L plates, so a learner burner. I would probably have hit a pole and died if there were any corners, but it was a straight line. I was in a torana that ran 12s on street tyres. Got him by a few legnths, but stock evo 6 compared to a a heavily modified torana, straight line only. The rs once bought back to its former glory. In time you will have so much fun in that on the twisties. An absolute sick car, just needs some love. And you dont need electric windows, its race car, or rally sport or whatever rs stands for. Keep it light weight i reckon, keep the cage for rigidity. Make it the fun weekender but looking good on the outside. No need for bash plates if its not jumping on rally stages. But a track weapon, i reckon it could dual purpose for that.

I don't know if an acid bath is really a good idea. Every piece of metal is either coated with primer before they are welded together into a shell or the whole shell is dipped in primer. A lot of areas are inaccessible and can never be properly painted again so if the acid strips paint then then the whole thing will rust from the inside out if it isn't also dipped in primer again. This is very expensive, not to mention you will never get all of the old paint out of the little crevasses of the shell so it will never be the same level or rust protection that it had from the factory. What you need to find is a place that specializes in restoration work. They will most likely put the shell on a rotisserie and either sand blast or soda blast all the rust and paint off. Then, they will prime it to prevent it from rusting and do the body work. If all you're worried about is the rust underneath then you can sandblast it yourself in your shop once you have a lift. The way it looks underneath won't matter as much so you won't have to do the typical body work stuff like filling, sanding, or worrying about getting the paint perfect.

Sam you need to change your way of thinking over the EVO. Now you just overthinking it what doesn't help. Your are talking to get the car to a body shop, but I am doing my body work alone and some things can you also, on that I am shure. Ask your self first, are you building a show car or a Time attack/ Rally car because you are talking about to put power windows in a original crank window car - just stop right there 👎. Wright down what you expect from a car first and then go from there. You will get a shop, have a EVO what Starts (that's a win by itself), Okachan and bunch of car friends with knolige and connections, you can use all these to your advantage. We won't mind if you take a break now and then, I have a Mitsubishi 3000 GTO sitting about 3 years but that's life. Get the Shop and make it cousy, park your car's in and look behind then you will realize what you all achieved and we will still support you. So, step by step Sam you are still young 👍👍👍.
