I spent the day diving with my sister, donning antique dive gear and for her first ever dive in heavy gear, she chose to use the US Navy Mark III. Now this helmet has quite a story, it was made by A J Morse & Son around the turn of the century. It started out its life as a 5 bolt helmet, making it a Navy Mark I helmet, and at some point the US Navy had the helmet updated from a bolt helmet to a threaded helmet. While this helmet is a Morse, the US Navy chose to have it converted by Schrader. A. Schrader's Son, Inc. has manufactured diving helmets since 1849, in New York. Schrader has changed hands a few times over the years, but in 1952 Craftsweld Equipment Corporation purchased Schrader and continued to produce Schrader helmets and equipment, but deciding to only use their brand name. Craftsweld produced many fine helmets over the years, including the commercial helmet I had the pleasure of diving, until the company sold in 1999 to Ray Mathieson, who revived the A. Schrader's Son, Inc. name and finally leaving New York for Maryland. In 2016 after Mathieson's passing, Schrader has a new home in Pennsylvania and a new owner, John Heinz.
