Ravangers squad leaders allowing soldiers to smoke while off base in Vietnam was one of the biggest mistakes, you can literally smell the smoker coming, and they leave a trail of butts as they’re on patrol, allowing the VC to know when the soldiers were marching down a trail, giving them extra time to prepare ambushes. This isn’t even mentioning that the glowing burning end of a cigarette make for an excellent target for marksmen.

They probably just started at shallow depths and went deeper and deeper until the suit failed. They dont even need a person inside it to figure out weather it worked or not. That being said, the Mythbusters definitely tested this theory and at a deep enough depth the suit would be completely intact while the simulated diver (pig carcass) within is entirely sucked inside the helmet from the pressure

Such sillyness ... I have used this type of gear .... the only way the diver could get squished into the helmet is if the air supply line was severed ( completely cut ) and the "cigarette smoke tested" one way valve failed !! Other than that it could go as deep as ever because the diver compensates for the water pressure by increasing the internal pressure via the air inlet valve. THEN you come to decompression ....& ..... Gas mixtures for depth compatibility .... and it all starts to get real complicated ...........

Brings back fond memories of my early days diving salvage with my father. You missed out quite a few 'tricks' but I guess the video can only be so long. We wore thick woollens under the suit to help maintain body temperature as the water would leech all our warmth. The air supply pumps were still manual hand pumps, 1 pump per diver, 4 men per pump. To call us up for lunch the hot aromatic food was held near the air intake, the food smell would have us at the surface in no time. Similarly, the men turning the pump handles were rotated regularly as their sweaty B.O. would also be pumped down to us. I hope you were briefed never to bend over as your suit was not laced to your body, but you were not deep enough for it to be life-threatening. Your air exhaust is at the top so if you bend over your exhaust moves to the bottom and your suit inflates and you surface fast, feet first. Lethal if you are at depth. Always check your suit for residents before you get dressed, nothing worse than having a cockroach or mouse appear in your helmet when you are under. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

LOL right back at you, Baron Mike Mangini. WWI took place from July 1914 to November 1918; this film is OBVIOUSLY from WAY after that. In fact, just judging by the uniform the technician is wearing, anyone with a bit of knowledge would know that this was made well after WWII (September 1939 to September 1945). This film is, in fact, from 1963. To answer your question about when the Mark V helmet was taken out of service, it lasted from 1916 all the way to 1984, although it was gradually being phased out in favor of the Mark 12 beginning in 1979.
@keyweststeve3509

The unnerving part of being down deep in one of these suits is that the pressure from the air being pumped into them is the only thing preventing you from being crushed to death. If your air line was cut there is a one-way valve in the helmet to keep the suit pressurized and gives you a few minutes to get out of the water but if that failed your body is literally pulverized and crush up into the helmet like a mass of jello. Nice thought huh? I recognize that due to the high water content of the human body it is almost non-compressible by water pressure so the only reason I can see that this happens must be due to the un-pressurized space inside the helmet.

Beginning in 1979 a newer helmet, the Mark 12, was phased in, but the suit itself stayed the same. Today, they're up to the Mark 21, and the suits are like standard SCUBA dry suits but with a collar to accept the hat. I'm not sure what some of you people think "Deep" is? A lot of you are clearly misinformed about the human body and depth, "Body crushed like a pop can"??? These MK5 suits were used in depths of about 600 fsw (feet sea water). I know of one instance it went to 800 fsw. 600-800 fsw is were modern Commercial divers do SAT work (Saturation diving). SCUBA diving is typically done between 0-130 fsw. With only Technically trained divers going deeper. The current world record depth for SCUBA is 1089 fsw. The ADS (Navy, Atmosphere diving suit) depth is 2000 fsw. The NEDU (Navy Experimental Dive Unit) record is 1800 fsw. And as far as the Human Anatomy of it all, the body is made up mostly of water and can withstand large amounts of water pressure.
