I remember that the Citroën 2cv (3cv, Mehari and Ami 8) had centrifugal clutch. But this was used mainly when the car was stopped and you put the 1st gear without using the clutch. The fact was that this engine, a tiny 2 cylinder boxer, neded a lot of revs to function properly. The car had clutch pedal for the 2nd and other gears, you can used it or not, depending if you let the revs go down to change gears or not. I think that the Renault 4L had the same clutch, but I'm not sure. Great work! That Lada sounds like and old Citroën!!!

Awesome work! I just wanted to remind you, that you can change gears without disengaging the clutch (waiting for it to drop in rpm). After acceleration just let of the gas pedal while simultateously pushing the gear lever to neutral... in a small timeframe there is no load on the transmission - so you can get in neutral with ease. To engage the new gear you have to adjust the engine rpm with the gas pedal and if the rpm is matched - it should be possible to engage the gear. (Google helps) I wish you would do a follow up video: How fast can you accelerate by flooring it in first gear? How much wear can be seen on the brake shoes? _____________________________________________________ Maybe add weights to the brake shoes while also using a stronger spring. Spring force is linear while centrifugal force is square to the rpm. ==> That should improve the clutch torque capacity without slipping after it reached its engaging rpm (1200 - 1300).
@televisionandcheese

I usually upshift while cruising without using a clutch, you just drop out of gear a quarter second after stepping off the throttle, and keep a smooth pressure into the gear immediately above, and as the revs drop the synchros will kick in and you should be able to shift into next gear with little to no shudder. I usually do it around town from 3-4 on a long straight over a bridge

Haven't watched the video but isn't that the opposite of what it should do?, a normal car slowes to a stop when you let off the gas, since the engine is being turned by the tires withouy the gas or air needed for combustion, basically the engine is just acting as a useless air compressor, slowing the car, add a centrifugal clutch and now the tires can't spin the engine taking much longer for the car to slow down under no throttle, since the only losses are now in friction in the trans, diff, and tires to road
@jaykoerner

@nerd1000ify

@sw4gr1d Most automatic cars have a sprag clutch in the transmission and will just freewheel when you lift off the accelerator, at least in the lower gears. I believe this was done mostly to ensure a smoother drive in low gear (you're probably familiar with the way a manual can shudder and jerk when you make a bad shift in low gear).

Bloody clever and worked fine - They did actually use the same setup in DaF 33, the little dutch car, but it also had a variable belt for the gearing - so an early constant velocity gearbox. It's pretty cool actually. I was thinking that you can archieve a similar thing using a normal clutch. Just use oil pressure to control the clutch operation, to elevate the oil presure the engine needs to rev up, put a release valve in the throttle assembly, so when you release the gas pedal, the clutch desenganges inmediately, so you can change gears more easy without waiting the engine to rev down. The only problem that i found is when you are in a hill and the engine rpm's aren't enough to keep the clutch enganged. But i think is a great solution for traffic jams, city driving and eldery people, your left leg suffers too much when are in a traffic jam lol

Guys.. watch out with the angle grinder and stuff inside the clutch and brakes , it might be asbestos..

If it was soviet made then i guarantee it to contain asbestos.

@@joefromravenna definitely, we've got high power Soviet resistors at work literally built by winding a bunch of wire on an asbestos block, ofc factory made with nameplates and everything

Brilliant! I've wondered before why this hasn't been done (probably just weight and durability compared to something light like a scooter). So it's clutch-less manual!

Back in early 80's, my father and I, changed the centrifugal clutch shoes on my mothers Daf 66. If I remember correctly there were 3 pivoting shoes, attached with springs into the center of the flywheel. She loved that car. Until it was totalled by a bin lorry

My 1971 VW Beetle semi automatic uses the same idea. 3 speed manual with no clutch pedal but uses a torque converter and an electrically controlled vacuume powered automatic clutch that applies the clutch when you touch the gearstick to allow you to change gears without it binding up or holding in gear like this one was doing

If you added a freewheeling part between the clutch and the transmission, it would have released fine.

like all experiments they built some they sold some the biggest problem came with engine braking on steep hills putting it from 4th to 3rd the clutch imediately bites and sends the revs to heaven the engine will break fun times

Awesome CVT for the win, and thanks for another great video i really enjoy them and you have a good wealth of knowledge. I would love to see your shop cleaned/re-orginised though you have knowledge and nice cars all i fear is someone doing something (and that's what lackey's are for) and looks way more professional when doing these videos.

So this would be a very useful device to use while teaching young people or kids how to drive a manual transmission. Because it teaches how to listen to the engine, and where engagement is. Very interesting, I was skeptical at first that it would work.

Wish I had that garage! You guys are always trying what we idly wonder about 😂 the problem with centrifugal clutches is always the springs. They tend to break when the heat gets high, at least most do. I know they sell similar setups to replace Harley clutches.
