Reading through the comments here and see many have questions that require follow up. Sadly, the video creator, William Miller, passed away suddenly a few years ago. Glad to see his legacy lives on in this video.

Great looking build! I'm planning on building a coop and run combo too and have been in the process of making some blueprints. Definitely learned a couple things about the roofing. I have to deal with higher winds and harsher winters though and will be going a little more heavy duty though.

I really like your coop. I plan on doing one myself. I do agree with one of the comments someone made about the opening at the top. I think it should be screened as well and a door on run door to close them in at night just in case something would get in the run area , so they are secure. Good job on it, hope mine turns out half as good as yours.

Not bad. Remember to close up up the window and the other big opening during the cold winter. One thing you could have done is put insulation panels under the roofing to lessen the noise from rain and especially hail. It helps keep the chickens calm during those events. You could still put up the insulation if you want.

nice coop. some advice. make sure your perimeter fence is dog, I mean predator proof. check it for holes loose boards and dug out spots. that wire cloth will keep chickens in but it won't keep the neighbors pit bull or German Shepherd out. ask me how I know.

You did great but knowing and seeing your errors, will also help in the next build. Although we think we can put some studs together to make a frame and eventually a chicken coop, but there are things we learn from it that can help in the next build, even if the chicken didn't care. For example, when I first started on a coop a few years ago, I wasn't even sure of the best way to connect two studs together to make a horizontal and vertical frame component. I mish-mashed it together but now I know better ways.

A chicken coop can be very easy to build...the problem is it may not look good. Many of these nice-looking coops have also spent several hundred dollars in materials as well as the tools they have, which they may not count because they already bought it for other wood projcts. However, at a very minimum, hammer, saw, and nails could build a coop.

Nice job. My only criticism is the structure is really nice and I would have used different siding that matched the wood better. But then again the cost of some nicer Plywood that would then have to be stained might make me make the same decision to go with what was chosen. I like the angle of the roof it would make an awesome rain catch that could run into a tank and automatic gravity fed waterer. With the right overflow and tank it could make watering the birds almost hands off depending on the rainfall of your area.

yes I just set them there. Its got good weight to it as it is but also remember its pretty protected from wind in its location. That's the main reason I was concerned about the pitch of the roof as well. If building in an open area...I consider anchoring down the corners to be safe... :)

@shakes3100
6 жыл бұрын
I've done hay and depending on your rain and drainage it stay wet. I've done pine shavings and it dries faster than hat but at 10.00 a bale of hay or 5.00 a bag of compressed shavings. I'm going to try a layer of sand. Like 3-4 inches deep. It will drain water, it's a one time cost and chicken poop is usually solid and or dries quickly so I can sift it rather than spending 30 or so a month on hay or shavings. Anyone else try this yet?
