The canvas you made is four pieces. I checked my old canvas and it’s actually two pieces. I think it would be simple to try this pattern that way the four wheel camper made. Any other reason to go a different approach on installation than old way?
@tgmorrissey
6 жыл бұрын
Great questions. I think my old canvas was only two pieces as well. But I do think the new ones are actually four pieces again, I could be wrong. See this link though, it looks like 4 to me. www.wanderthewest.com/forum/topic/12116-new-build-1981-grandby-to-become-a-hawk/?p=153321 Regardless, my reasoning was I was trying so hard not to mess up and ruin a large sheet requiring another purchase. I had bought enough to material to allow one major mess up if need be. Thats why I went with four pieces, as if I screwed up a window panel I could scrap that panel (smaller since 1/4 total, not 1/2). I mean technically you could do one piece with one seam. Maybe FWC does more pieces now just so it is easier to handle on the machine. Truly don't know. I definitely know four wheel camper has actively changed the canvas a lot over time. That why they went from inside flaps, to outside flaps, back to inside flaps. They have a video about it somewhere.

Okay, you got me now. Just subbed. I'm going to build my own FWC based on a Land Rover 110 Hi-Capacity truck bed which is mounted on a stretched British Army Land Rover Sankey trailer. This is going to be an expedition trailer to tow across Africa for a year with my wife. Am I going to sew the fabric sides myself? Hmmm, let me think about it...not a chance in hell! I'll build the roof, interior, interior trailer bits, wire it, etc., and then pay some very nice ladies at one of the UK Land Rover trim places to do that for me. ;-) I'm a GDY in the UK (god d*mn Yank) so I really enjoy watching one of my young countrymen actually get something done, and done well. I am a retired US Navy Chief and have very high standards; you pass with flying colors. BZ! Btw, the reason you ended up short (and great planning for the inevitable cluster f*ck, btw!) is because as it rounds the corners it takes up extra material. Steel does the same thing as you bend it. It always takes more than you think!.

I have some laying around still, if you buy a sticker I can put a sample of the material in there for you to figure out the guage but it doesn't matter all that much. I never did do the thermal fabric. The 22 wt vinyl is pretty good on it owns, though I want to do the fabric someday. Send over any more question you want. Are you going to sew one yourself? We've slept in in the winter plenty. We have great sleeping bags and are perfectly cozy through the night. We have been in it down to -20F but it was absolutely freezing in the camper too. Again we are fine in the bags but not so much outside the bags. I have not made the arctic linear yet. But I have heard they work very well. We have a wave 3 heater. It works okay. Not the most powerful thing in the world. If winter ever shows up here in colorado we will start to really test it. The goal is 60-70 F inside during any weather. I plan on increaseing heater power till we get there. Maybe even a wood stove:)

Hey. Congrats on the old fleet purchase. I would not suggest painting or dying your canvas. if you are going to go through that much trouble, I'd just replace it, I am sure an old 81 canvas could use an update. But what do I know, if you are up for the project, go for it and let me know how the recolor turns out. Also, have you considered just deep washing it using the 303 product line? Hi Tim: Great stuff. Your videos are helping me, and in a week I'll start cutting. One question - I've heard the HH-66 is strong enough that stitching isn't required - I'm thinking of your doing the last seam with the awl. Did you consider just using the HH-66?

Thanks plitos321! Glad you are finding the videos helpful. I have also heard the glue could be enough. And I can confirm it does make a very stong bond. The last stitch that we did only once the canvas was installed was just glue for a while and it seemed perfect before the hand stitching. But I just can't say yes or no if just HH-66 is enough. I bought a military cargo trailer and I'm going to build a wooden enclosure wrapped in fiberglass and coated with bedliner. I want to make half of the roof pop up so I have some standing room. I was scrambling ideas and when I saw you screw down your vinyl, it was like light bulb went off lol. Is there like rubber or something between the vinyl or is the bracket thing the only thing holding it against the trailer?
@tgmorrissey
6 жыл бұрын
Very cool, those cargo trailers can be pretty neat! No there is no rubber or anything between the vinyl and the camper body. Down at the bottom attachment, it really does not need a gasket as weather will run down onto the camper body and not up between the camper and vinyl. And up at the top attachment point, the metal roof covers the canvas, and thus there is again not a need for any gasket. I talk about this at the 7:00 mark. essentailly it is the method in which things overlap and fold that makes the weather seal, rather then tight pressure and a gasket. Works great! Let me know if you have any other questions and again thanks for watching, so glad you find the video useful.

Hi! The videos were great and have been a huge help in getting my head wrapped around this part of the project. I am building a camper myself and took it in to a professional to get the tent made up, as I'm no sewing expert, and he raised a concern that I had not thought of and I was wondering if you had input on it. Since the tent is on the outside of the frame and gets folded into the inside of the camper, the tent is getting sandwiched in-between the frame when the top is collapsed down and he said it would wear the fabric out pretty quickly. I was wondering if you have ever had an issue with the tent wearing out from that or if there is some kind of foam like material on the frame to protect the fabric? I was also wondering if you've ever had issues with your clear vinyl windows breaking in the winter? And my last question is, how do you like having the velcro strap to attach your insulating fabric? Do you have any issues with the velcro not holding? Would you recommend snaps over the velcro or vise versa? Sorry to bombard you with questions, thanks again for the video!
@tgmorrissey
3 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the questions. Glad you found this helpful. Pinching has not been an issue. I have pretty heavy materials so I think that helps. I do have a few small pinholes at the pivot area from where I have so hardware that did not sit flush. But if anything lines up right you should Not have an issue. Check out my video camper 2.0 where I talk about how the fabric is holding up. No issues with winter weather and cracking windows. And I’ve been in some serious cold. I never did make an Arctic linear. So I don’t know how the velcro would hold. But I’m assuming we’ll. It’s what fwc does. If you found my content helpful and you want to support more. Hi Tim: One other question. Why did you decide to sew a separate arctic liner strip rather than sew the velcro for the liner to the new sidewall? I ask because it seems like an extra step. Thanks - Jeff, Laramie WY
@tgmorrissey
6 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeff, Great question! A few reasons, none of which matter all that much. I really just wanted a 'warm up' project so the strips made a great simple starter project. Also, I was terrified to ruin my large sheets that made up my main sidewalls, and sewing the velcro to those would add one more possibility of that. Lastly, I figured the fewer seams (holes) in the main sidewall that is exposed to the elements, the better. With the way I did it, those linear stip seams are completely inside the camper and protected by the solid main sidewall near the roof. Again, none of these are enough to say the velcro could not simply be sewn to the main sidewalls, I am sure either way works quite well. Do you know what FWC or ATC is doing today?
@philos321
6 жыл бұрын
I went to the FWC website and there was one picture that looked like they had a strip like yours. I like the reasoning, but I don't have extra long vinyl strips like you did. My panels are 30" - half the roll. I guess I could cobble a strip together using smaller pieces... Thanks for the quick reply!
@tgmorrissey
6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I am sure just attaching to the main panel could work fine too. If you are making one that is just the perfect size, I would suggest you glue on a few temporary tabs around the parameter down at the bottom, just little strips that hang maybe a few inches off that you can cut off cleaning once installed. That should give you something to pull the top tight when you install.
@philos321
6 жыл бұрын
I'll do that - it makes sense. I'm going make the EMT lifts and the final width of the vinyl siding to fit the 36" struts I've got. If the vinyl is less than the 28" or so inside width I'm shooting for, that's fine. It would be nice to have the struts just about fully extended.

Hi, Tim. Great videos! I'm glad someone was daring enough to try this for the rest of us, and I'm glad it turned out so well for you. I am going to attempt the same on my '84 Fleet. My camper is 6' tall, but I am 6'3" and would like to add an extra 4" or so to my tent, but I worry about integrity when it's popped open. Thanks again for the videos! Happy travels!

Hi Tayler. Glad you enjoy the videos! Awesome that you are attempting your own rebuild. yes I did add height, I went from ~5'11" to 6'7" and I love it. Realy makes it feel roomeier and I love that I can sit upright in my bed. You do of course have to redo the lifters if you add height to the tent. I would strongly suggest the extra height if doing a full rebuild. I have had my camper in some moderate winds when the whole camper shakes but the roof seems fine. It is crazy how secure the roof felt after installing the canvas. Are you redoing the roof linear as well?
