I've had this workbench for 20+ years. It was a flat bench with two layers of edge-glued 2x8s. Bottom layer was screwed to the frame and top layer was screwed to the bottom layer from below. I recently rebuilt it out of the same material and improved its design to suit my needs.
I added a channel between the top and the tool tray and also included some slots from tools like chisels, square and saws. The channel allows me to install a stop for hand-planing short workpieces. The tool tray help keep things away from the work area and also let me clamp wide workpiece to the side of the bench for dovetail work. The top was hand-planed to a flatness that will facilitate hand-planing workpieces for cabinetry.
On the right side, I added a tail vise for holding smaller workpieces and in conjunction with the bench dogs, hold long workpieces for hand-planing and grooving and other relevant operation.
The whole re-build didn't cost me anything as the lumber were cut from the old bench top. The bench dogs were cut from dowels that I milled from the excess wood. I also made the dowel cutter myself and used my chisel for the cutter. The tail vise uses a 3/8 inch threaded rod. Operation can be slow due to the high thread count. To counter that, I used a 3/8 nut pinned to the end of the rod and used a removable handle for moving the vise body. A cordless drill mounted with a 9/16 socket can also be used to move the vise body quickly. Due to high thread count of the rod, the vise is quite strong in holding on to the workpiece. The whole endeavor was quite in-expensive but also fulfilling for me as it gave me a ton of improvement from my old bench top. This whole thing can be achieved by anybody willing to do some DIY project with minimal spending.
